Chapter 51: Shattered Masks and Shielded Hearts
Outside in the hallway, the air pulsated with lethal tension. Min-ho could hear Jean-Luc's voice—that smug, arrogant French that seeped through the heavy wood like venom. Then, he heard Clara's firm, defiant response: "Never." In that exact moment, the cool, calculating businessman inside Min-ho died for good. All that remained was the man willing to risk absolutely everything for the woman who had saved his life in a stuck elevator.
He ripped the heavy fire extinguisher from its wall mount. He wasn't thinking about contracts, reputation, or the media. He was only thinking of her.
Inside the room...
Jean-Luc pressed the flat of the blade firmer against Clara's carotid artery. "You smell of fear, chérie. That was always my favorite thing about you. We are leaving this country of clowns. Now."
Clara looked into the mirror on the wall. She no longer saw the terrified, defenseless girl from Paris. She saw Ariadne. She saw a woman who had stood face-to-face with her demons. "You can kill me, Jean-Luc," she whispered, her voice laced with a sudden, icy calm that made him pause. "But I will never go with you again. The world knows my face. You have no power over me anymore."
Jean-Luc's face contorted with unbridled rage. He raised his hand, poised to strike—
BOOM.
The door burst inward under the catastrophic impact of the massive fire extinguisher. Splinters of wood rained down like confetti as Min-ho shoved the debris aside and stormed into the room like a vengeful god. Without a second of hesitation, he hurled the heavy metal cylinder straight at Jean-Luc's legs. The Frenchman shrieked in agony as the metal slammed into his shins, sending him stumbling backward. The knife slipped from his grip, skittering across the floor.
"LET. HER. GO!" Min-ho roared, throwing himself at the man.
An uneven, brutal brawl erupted. Min-ho hadn't anticipated just how skilled of a fighter Jean-Luc actually was. To make matters worse, the Frenchman scrambled across the floor, his fingers locking around the hilt of the fallen knife once more.
"No! Min-ho, stop! He'll kill you!" Clara screamed, her voice trembling with terror. But Min-ho didn't retreat a single inch. He was utterly determined never to abandon the woman he loved again. This time, he would protect her with his life.
The struggle continued, and Jean-Luc clearly held the upper hand, nearly slashing Min-ho with a vicious swipe of the blade.
Then, backup arrived. Like a perfectly choreographed cavalry, three more men charged into the room: Lukas, looking like a literal avenging angel in high-end designer clothes; Pascale, the spitting image of his brother; and Mr. Kim.
Mr. Kim was the ultimate surprise. He wore his dark blue velvet blazer with such immense elegance and authority that he looked like the commander of an elite special forces unit. He looked incredibly sharp—no longer a man buried in spreadsheets and binders, but a man ready to fight for justice. While Min-ho desperately tried to pin Jean-Luc to the ground, Mr. Kim orchestrated the approaching hotel security guards with a single, commanding gesture.
"Restrain him! Immediately!" Mr. Kim ordered, his voice brooking absolutely no argument.
Lukas rushed over to Clara, throwing his arms around her to shield her. Meanwhile, Pascale threw himself onto Jean-Luc with such raw velocity that he pinned the man to the floor. Straddling him, Pascale brought his closed fist down into Jean-Luc's face with a devastating strike, fracturing the Frenchman's jaw. Pascale winced, injuring his own hand in the process, but the surge of pure, pent-up rage at the man who had abused and exploited his best friend made every bit of pain worth it.
Nobody had expected Pascale to possess that kind of brutality. Even Jean-Luc, battered and bleeding, looked up at him with a gaze bordering on sheer awe. Pascale leaned down close to Jean-Luc's face, his voice dripping with venom. "That is for what you did to my friend, you piece of trash. If I ever see your frog-eating face again, may God have mercy on your soul."
Clara was utterly speechless. Lukas grinned widely at his twin, shaking his head. "Respect, little brother. From now on, I'm calling you the Killer."
The police flooded into the room, promptly slapping handcuffs onto Jean-Luc. As the Frenchman was dragged away, still spewing bitter curses, a sudden, almost sacred silence descended upon the ruined suite.
Min-ho stood up, breathing heavily. His shirt was torn, his knuckles bleeding. He looked at Clara, and all the pride, all the arrogance of the past few years melted away from him like old skin. He walked toward her, pausing exactly two steps away.
"I was an idiot," he said, his voice raspy and choked with emotion. "I should have believed you. I should have never left you alone."
Clara stared at him. She was shaking, but a beautiful smile broke across her face. She took the final step closing the distance between them, gently placing her hands against his cheeks. "We're even, Min-ho. I saved you in that elevator when you couldn't breathe. Now, you kicked the door down when I had no freedom left. We're a team now."
She collapsed into his arms, and Min-ho held her so tightly, as if she were the most precious treasure in the entire universe. Burying his face in her hair, he whispered endless promises of safety into her ear.
Watching them from the edge of the room stood Lukas and Pascale, taking in the sight of the two lovers standing amidst the shattered wood and police officers, completely lost in each other.
"Oh my god..." Lukas suddenly squeaked in an incredibly high, hyper-emotional pitch, dabbing at his eyes with a silk handkerchief. "I just love happy endings! I'm getting totally choked up, this is so beautiful!"
Mr. Kim took a step closer to him. He still looked breathtakingly handsome in his velvet blazer, but his stern mask of professionalism was completely crumbling. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a second handkerchief, offering it to Lukas.
"Here, Lukas..." Mr. Kim said, his voice cracking slightly. He gave Lukas a gentle, comforting pat on the shoulder, though his own eyes were glistening dangerously with unshed tears. "It... it truly is beautiful."
Then, both men paused, looked into each other's eyes, and simultaneously burst into violent, uninhibited sobbing—two grown, incredibly stylish men, sniffling loudly into their tissues. Meanwhile, right past them, Min-ho and Clara shared their first real, genuine kiss since the elevator debacle.
"I need..." Lukas sobbed, "I need a massive portion of pasta and a ridiculous amount of wine right now."
"My treat," Mr. Kim choked out through his tears, adjusting his glasses as he offered Lukas a supportive arm. "I'll pay for everything."
"Hey, boys?" Pascale cut in, holding up his bruised knuckles. "What do you mean, you're going to amuse yourselves while I'm sitting here with a broken hand? I want pasta too, and more importantly, alcohol. I need to disinfect myself from the inside out before I catch an infection. You are not going anywhere without me. Mr. Kim, get over here and kiss my hand to make the pain go away."
Lukas immediately snapped out of his crying fit, glaring at his twin. "Keep your hands to yourself and keep your eyes off my Mr. Kim, or I will become the next killer in this family, got it?!"
