Who would have thought returning to the only world I knew would bring back colour to my cheeks? I didn't know how much I missed working in the office until I started my work. Nyx did just like I asked him to. He designed my office on the third floor just like I asked him to.
It was like a working paradise, having everything I needed within arm's reach, and I couldn't ask for anything more. It was easier than when I managed an entire company with Kelvin. I got right into track with the employees under me.
It had only been a week so far since I started working here, but it felt like I had been doing this job for a year now. None of them made me feel like I wasn't part of them, and there was no gossip about me securing the post because I knew who the CEO was.
A knock on the door caused me to look up from my laptop. I was going through the ad proposal so I could work on a new product, and was almost done with the selection of an ad model.
My secretary stepped in. Yeah, you read that right. Not only did I get a position in his company, but I got a secretary too.
She smiled. "I apologise for disturbing you, ma, but there was a mistake in the list of models I showed you."
I set my pen down and leaned back in my seat, motioning for her to come in. "Don't apologise, Clara. Accuracy matters more than my concentration. What kind of mistake are we looking at?"
She crossed the room and slid a corrected folder onto my desk. "Model seventeen. The portfolio we had on file was outdated. She signed an exclusive with a competitor last month. I've replaced her with three alternatives that match the demographic profile you wanted. Their rates and availability are on the second page."
I flipped the folder open and scanned the headshots. "Good catch," I said, circling two names. "These two. Book the conference room for Thursday. I want them both for a chemistry read with the product. And Clara? Double-check the usage rights on the previous campaign while you're at it."
She nodded, jotting notes on her tablet. "Already done."
"Push my lunch to twelve-thirty. I'll take the budget review in the boardroom." I turned back to my laptop, pulling up the campaign analytics. "And send the revised proposal to Legal before the end of the day. I want their eyes on the disclaimer copy before we pitch next week."
"Okay, ma!" She smiled and turned, hurrying towards the door only to pause. "Can I say something, ma?" She asked, turning to look at me.
I raised a brow. "What's it?"
"You're really good with your work," she complimented. "I have been working for the former director for three years but have never seen him with such an aura. It's almost as if you were born for the job."
A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. "Thanks."
If only she knew what a workaholic I was at my company. Back then, I didn't even rest when I was supposed to. I sacrificed everything to push us forward only for everything to go down the drain in a day. All my years of sacrifice vanished.
"I really hope to be like you someday." Smiling, she stepped out of my office and closed the door gently behind her.
"Aspire to be greater than me," I whispered, even though she couldn't hear it.
…
Like I had been doing since I started work a week ago, I worked until evening. I didn't even get to have lunch because I was busy trying to catch up with the workload the previous director left.
Clara wasn't joking about him leaving a mountain of work behind.
At exactly 6, my phone rang. Smiling, I reached for it, knowing who was calling. He was, after all, the only one who had my number.
"Did you miss me?" I asked the second I took the call, smiling like a girl speaking with her crush.
"You know the answer to that, Mon amour," he responded. "You skipped lunch today, right?"
I gasped dramatically. "How did you know?"
"Nothing goes past me, schatz."
I rolled my eyes, smiling. "More like you placed spies all around me."
He must have asked Clara about it. Since he was the boss, she wouldn't lie to him.
"Let's grab dinner before going home."
"Is that a date?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Hmm."
"Perfect!" I got up from my chair and started packing. "Should I meet you in your office or outside the building?"
"I'm already outside. Meet me in a few."
"Okay. See you."
I disconnected and resumed packing. I did so hurriedly, eager to see him. Even though I always saw him in the morning before leaving for work and spent the evening with him, I was always eager to see him.
It must be his pretty eyes and handsome face. That must be the only reason my heart always skips a beat at the thought of seeing my vampire lover with an infuriating attitude.
I grabbed my bag and shut down my laptop before I left my room, eager to have dinner. The third floor was nearly empty, most of the corridor lights already dimmed for the night.
Nyx was waiting at the curb, just as he'd promised.
He opened the door for me, and I got in before he closed it and walked around to the other side.
"Jax's not driving us?" I raised a brow.
"Do you want him to do so?"
"Nah." I put on the seatbelt. "So, where are we going?"
"It's a secret." Winking, he started the car.
"I hope it's worth my time." I leaned on the seat as he drove off.
"It'll be. Trust me, mon trésor."
I blushed. I'd been browsing the pet names he calls me, and had discovered what most of them meant. To think he was calling me his love and treasure all along.
"Guilty, Ma biche."
I shot him a warning glare, and he had the guts to chuckle.
