Chapter 8 - Chapter 7

Summer vacation began immediately after the trip. Judging by the light novel and what I know about Mo Fan, he should soon join the hunters, and a week before that, a girl who was with Jiaxing Xia in the library should disappear. Taking advantage of this, I wanted to check what would happen if I slightly changed insignificant events. So, the first thing I did upon my return was to visit Jiaxing Xia. I found her in the yard behind the school; this time, her wheelchair was not taken away, after all, they are afraid of Mo Fan.

"Hello, Jiaxing Xia," I greeted her, approaching her.

"How are you?"

"Hello, brother Yun, I'm fine," She replied with a smile.

"I'll escort you to the dormitory, do you mind?" I asked, and she shook her head negatively.

"Has anything strange happened lately?"

"No, is something wrong?" She asked, very worried.

"Nothing. I will try to always pick you up from school until classes begin. So don't forget your phone, and don't spare money for calls. I will call you before I come," I said, in a very casual tone, I didn't want her to know that I was just using her.

"Don't you need to study?" She asked worriedly, turning around.

"No, I have time to escort you. After practice, I wanted to spend more time with you," I smiled back at her.

"Ah, well, then it's fine," She smiled back, and then we continued to chat about all sorts of unnecessary topics.

Everything was unfolding well for my experiment. I don't think Mo Fan will delay more than two weeks before going to the hunters. It's a pity that the original doesn't have exact dates, even if I didn't remember such small ones, at least I could prepare for the big ones! Now all I have to do is escort Jiaxing Xia every day, and sooner or later, she will stay with her friend in the library, after which only one of them should remain. I can say that I am also protecting Jiaxing Xia, ha. But it's even better this way, she is still needed.

To my surprise, I had to wait quite a long time, almost a month! What is this Mo Fan doing? No, I do see him every day, of course, but I still can't understand what this blockhead is up to. And then, when I called Jiaxing Xia again, she said she would be delayed at the library. I replied that I would come for her right at the library. However, I didn't go there immediately; I walked around the school grounds, looking for a tunnel from which a rat should appear, but unfortunately, I didn't find one, it seems to be a place where an outsider cannot get.

After that, I observed the library and the two very beautiful girls inside. One, of course, was Jiaxing Xia, and the second was her friend, who was supposed to die today. You might ask why I am so sure that events will unfold as in the original? I will answer that I am not sure about this, but if we assume that without me everything would have gone according to canon, then this should happen. I had over nine years before entering the magic school to comprehend everything that should happen according to canon and how I can influence it. In the course of my reflections, I came to the conclusion that all events are divided into three types.

The first are events that will happen absolutely certainly and I have no possibility to influence them. These include the world university competitions, the invasion of the oceanic race with a cold snap, as well as tragedies in the cities of Bo and Xi'an.

The second are those events that I can influence by direct intervention, but which will happen if I simply don't interfere. These include the duel with Yu An, Mo Fan's demonization, the clash of Egyptian and Chinese undead, the search for totems, and many other events of various scales.

And finally, the third are simply random events. The disappearance of this student, who is now peacefully studying with Jiaxing Xia, falls into this category. Indeed, think about it yourself, what is the probability that a rat would dig a tunnel here? Will it come here today when there is only one person and kill him? The purpose of my experiment today is not just to see what happens if I slightly change history and save this girl, but to find out if this completely unpredictable event will happen or not. If it happens, then one can hope that other similar events will also happen, this was my theory. Whether this world will follow canon or not, and what will happen if it is slightly interfered with. This is very important knowledge for my future actions.

So, let's return to what is happening in the library. I sat outside, watching the girls reading books through the window. When it started to get dark, I finally waited for Jiaxing Xia to say goodbye to the second one, who decided to stay longer, after which I entered the library.

"Oh, brother Yun, where have you been for so long?" Jiaxing Xia asked as soon as she saw me.

"Uh… I unexpectedly had things to do… Someone asked for my help, and my phone died," I replied awkwardly and slightly distractedly.

"I see, but didn't you ask me to keep an eye on my phone and always be in touch, and today you messed up yourself," Jiaxing Xia pouted at my words.

"Well, that… Sorry, my fault," I smiled.

"But still keep an eye on your phone, don't repeat my mistakes."

"Ah, who are you?" Asked the girl sitting next to Jiaxing Xia.

"I'm her brother, Jiaxing Yun, nice to meet you," I said, bowing slightly.

"And you are quite cute," I added, straightening up, and I wasn't lying, she was quite beautiful, she could easily compete with Jiaxing Xia. Long black hair, golden-blue eyes, an attractive bust, a slender figure, and many other things that I really liked in girls. She blushed slightly at my words and pouted.

"Is he really your brother?" The girl asked Jiaxing Xia.

"Yes, not my biological brother, my father took him in because…" After these words, Jiaxing Xia fell silent.

"My hunter parents abandoned me," I smiled.

"I was lucky to find such a kind person as Mo Jiaxingg. What's your name?"

"My name is Lin Yun Er, since you came for my sister, escort her to the dormitory, I'll be back later," The girl said dryly, shrugging.

"No, wait, how can I leave you here alone? Let's go together, I'll escort you too," I said, starting to implement my plan.

"I still need to study a bit more," She continued to refuse.

"Well, you can study later. Let's go, I'd like to know more about you," I continued to persuade her.

"Lin Yun Er, let's go, why are you sitting here alone?" Jiaxing Xia took the initiative.

"He's a good person."

"Only if he carries some books that I need," Lin Yun Er said, slightly sulking, giving in to persuasion.

"Great, where are they," I eagerly volunteered to help. And… Damn, this is brutal! She piled more books into the bag than they had looked at all this time! And not one or two, but seven! They were impossibly heavy to carry.

"Ugh, what's that smell," Lin Yun Er said when we left the library.

"It smells like a garbage dump, where did it come from?"

"And it feels like someone is watching us," Jiaxing Xia added. The smell was indeed disgusting.

"What a stench, let's get out of here quickly," I said, following them, carrying a bag of books in each hand!

"Isn't it heavy for you?" Lin Yun Er laughed, turning to me.

"Maybe you should help after all?"

"Of course not, let's get out of here, and quickly," I replied with slight irritation.

"If I offered to help, I will help."

After my words, we hurried away, and the feeling of being watched disappeared immediately as we took a few steps. Along the way, we talked a lot about various nonsense. It turned out that Lin Yun Er is a light mage, who awakened her magic at the beginning of last school year. Because she awakened light, she was very upset, and Jiaxing Xia cheered her up, and they became friends. I, in turn, told her to study hard, and at higher levels of magic, light would become very strong. This cheered her up. As we parted, I said that I would come for them tomorrow, and also got Lin Yun Er's phone number, it might come in handy sometime.

I didn't go back to the library to deal with the rat, no, of course, I could have, but I didn't need to. I had already made sure that random events could and most likely would happen, so now all that remained was to keep an eye on Mo Fan's first task – the hunter, and also to check if the events would adjust to the canon if they were slightly changed. I didn't plan to stop escorting Jiaxing Xia immediately, as it would be suspicious, just a little, and it's inconvenient for me. So the next day I came for her again, this time Lin Yun Er was also with her. They both had a strange expression on their faces, a mixture of fear and happiness, something definitely happened.

"Hello, girls, did something happen?" I decided to find out everything right away.

"Yes, yesterday, a girl working in the library disappeared," Jiaxing Xia said in a sad voice.

"And is there no information about this?" I asked worriedly.

"No," Lin Yun Er said dryly.

"But there are rumors that she was taken by a monster, they even called the hunters."

"I see. Then why are you so sad? You couldn't have prevented this, could you?" I asked, not understanding.

"Yes, we just thought that if it weren't for you, I could have disappeared," Lin Yun Er also said.

"If you hadn't persuaded me to leave with you yesterday, the monster might have taken me, not her."

"Well, it's good that I came for Jiaxing Xia then," I shrugged, pretending to be completely uninvolved.

"Let's hope the hunters find her."

"Yeah… That's all we can do," Lin Yun Er said, nodding her head. After a short walk, I escorted them to the dormitory.

This continued for the next week, and on the last day of vacation, Mo Fan called Jiaxing Xia. From the conversation, I understood that he was very worried about Jiaxing Xia, as the librarian had disappeared, and he also asked what had happened then. He also let slip that a student had disappeared today. Well, now I need to keep an eye on him. After quickly escorting the two girls to the dormitory, which was far from Ming Wei School, I was about to return when a familiar female voice called out to me.

"Lin Yun Er? Did something happen?" I asked in surprise, turning to the one who called me.

"Th-this… Classes are about to start, and you won't be able to escort Jiaxing Xia anymore, which means we won't be able to meet like this…" She said shyly, looking at her feet. Naturally, I guessed what she wanted to say, but my assumption might have been wrong, so I decided not to show it.

"Well, yes… Classes and all… Does this really bother you somehow?" I asked, puzzled.

"I just decided to escort my sister while I had time, you just happened to be nearby."

"Really?" She asked, disappointed, looking at me.

"At first, yes…" I replied, turning away, feeling a slight tremor. For the first time in both my lives, someone had so clearly decided to confess their love to me from the bottom of their heart! So even I couldn't remain calm, and besides, I would be lying if I said that I didn't find her attractive. And besides, she is not just a character in a story, whom I know inside and out, she is quite suitable for the role of an ordinary person, about whom I know nothing! She was supposed to die a week ago, so now her future is truly unknown and uncharted. And the very fact of this suggests that she needs to be monitored, for scientific interest, of course…

"I see… That's good…" She said, slightly cheered, smiling.

"So what did you want? I have other things to do…" I said, also slightly embarrassed. Confessing myself was a little scary, and besides, I had serious doubts about the necessity of such an action. In the sense that it would be of little use. Yes, sometimes I also wanted to find a girl and date, but having lived a second life without dating anyone, I discarded all such thoughts, concentrating on other things. But on the other hand, if they confess to me, isn't it rude to refuse someone you also find attractive? Maybe something will really come of it, right?

"Ah, this… Well, I just wanted to invite you to go shopping on the weekend…" She said, embarrassed.

"Well, in the sense, would you like to accompany me? After all, it's not very nice for a lonely girl to go alone…"

"Uh… Don't you have friends for that?" I said, surprised and completely flustered, saying completely the wrong thing and not what I should have said in such situations! This is not even like me, to lose self-control and clear thinking like this. Is it the hope for the first sincere love in my two lives that is affecting me so much?

"If you don't want to, just say so!" She said, offended, turning away and preparing to go to the dormitory.

"No, wait… I don't mind…" I said, quickly recovering.

"Well, okay… Then this Saturday?" She asked, smiling.

"Yes, I can," I agreed, nodding my head.

"Okay, then see you!" She waved her hand and left.

Recovering, I ran towards Ming Wei Academy; because of this delay, I was likely very late, so I had to run across the rooftops using wind magic. In the end, I was very exhausted, but the hunters were still here, which meant Mo Fan was with them, and the rat had apparently not been killed yet. I climbed over the fence, but instead of heading straight to the cafeteria, where the most interesting part was supposed to happen, I headed to the building opposite, having timely grabbed a previously hidden pair of binoculars.

Carefully settling on the roof, I used the binoculars to observe through the huge windows of the cafeteria how Mo Fan was inspecting it, and then stumbled upon the rat; I managed to arrive in time. I was ready to rush to his aid at any moment, but fortunately, it was not necessary, and other hunters came to his aid. And then, almost without problems, they killed the rat, although it was more resilient and aggressive than usual.

Immediately after that, I hurried to hide so as not to raise any unnecessary questions. The experiment was a success; saving one insignificant girl for the further narrative did not affect the immediate events, but what will happen next, we will see. This Saturday, I expect unexpected turns. Moving away from the school, I took out my notebook and marked the fourth leaf with a checkmark.
