Chapter 9 - chapter 9: the way he looked at her

No one spoke for a long time after Adrian disappeared.

The Anchor Zone felt stable again—but not the same.

Like something had entered it that wasn't supposed to… and left a mark behind.

---

Fiona Brown stood exactly where she had been, her fingers still wrapped tightly around her notebook.

Her heart hadn't slowed down yet.

It wasn't just fear.

That would've been easier.

---

"He shouldn't be able to enter here."

Zara Collins' voice broke the silence.

Calm.

But sharp underneath.

---

Ryan Miller didn't move from where he had stepped in front of Fiona.

"That wasn't normal entry," he said. "He didn't pass through the boundary like The Blur does."

Hannah Clarke looked unsettled.

"It felt different," she said quietly. "More… controlled."

---

Fiona finally spoke.

"…He saw me."

Her voice was soft.

Almost distant.

---

Ryan turned to her immediately.

"I know."

Fiona shook her head slightly.

"No, I mean—he really saw me."

A pause.

"Not like everyone else."

---

That made the room go quieter.

Not louder.

Quieter.

---

Zara crossed her arms.

"That's exactly the problem," she said.

---

Fiona looked up.

"Why?"

---

Ryan answered this time.

"Because The Blur doesn't 'see' people," he said. "It removes them from attention."

Hannah added:

"But he didn't."

---

Fiona swallowed.

"Then what is he?"

---

Zara's expression darkened slightly.

"Something in between," she said.

"Not fully human… not fully part of The Blur either."

---

Ryan's voice lowered.

"And that makes him dangerous."

---

Fiona looked down at her notebook again.

The words were still there:

HE IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS.

Her grip tightened.

"I didn't feel like he was trying to erase me," she admitted.

---

Ryan's reaction was immediate.

"That doesn't mean he won't."

---

Fiona flinched slightly at his tone.

Ryan noticed.

And his voice softened—just a little.

"It means he's unpredictable," he corrected.

---

Hannah stepped closer to Fiona.

"What you felt matters," she said gently.

"But don't confuse being noticed with being safe."

---

Fiona nodded slowly.

But her thoughts weren't settling.

They were circling.

---

Because something about that moment kept replaying in her head.

The way Adrian had looked at her.

Focused.

Curious.

Almost… careful.

---

"Why did he say I shouldn't exist?" Fiona asked quietly.

---

Zara didn't hesitate.

"Because you break the pattern."

---

Ryan continued:

"The Blur removes things that aren't held in attention."

Hannah added:

"But you… stay."

---

Fiona looked up.

"So I'm a problem?"

Zara met her gaze directly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"For them."

---

Fiona exhaled slowly.

That should've made her feel better.

It didn't.

---

Ryan finally stepped back slightly, giving her space—but not too much.

"He wasn't here to attack," he said.

"He was observing."

---

Fiona frowned.

"Observing what?"

---

Ryan's eyes met hers.

"You."

---

A silence stretched between them.

Not uncomfortable.

But heavy.

---

Fiona's voice dropped.

"…Why?"

---

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

Zara did.

"Because you're changing how this works," she said.

---

Fiona blinked.

"What do you mean?"

---

Hannah spoke softly.

"The Blur doesn't usually react this early," she said.

"And it definitely doesn't send something like him."

---

Ryan added:

"You're forcing it to adapt."

---

Fiona felt a strange mix of fear and something else she couldn't name.

"So now I'm being watched?"

---

Zara's answer was simple.

"Yes."

---

Fiona let out a quiet breath.

"That's… not comforting."

---

Ryan looked at her again.

"Then don't face it alone."

---

Fiona hesitated.

There was something different in his tone now.

Not just instruction.

Not just strategy.

Something more personal.

---

"You stepped in front of me," she said suddenly.

Ryan blinked slightly.

"When?"

---

"Just now," Fiona said.

"When he moved closer."

A pause.

"You didn't have to."

---

Ryan held her gaze for a second.

Then looked away slightly.

"…Yes, I did."

---

Fiona's chest tightened.

"Why?"

---

Ryan didn't answer right away.

And for the first time—

he looked unsure of what to say.

---

Zara cut in before the silence could stretch too long.

"We need to adjust training," she said.

Her voice returned to normal. Controlled. Focused.

"He crossed into an Anchor Zone. That changes things."

---

Hannah nodded.

"We can't assume safe spaces are safe anymore."

---

Ryan straightened slightly.

"I'll stay closer to her during training," he said.

---

Fiona looked at him again.

There it was.

That same quiet certainty.

---

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But real.

---

Zara didn't argue.

"Good," she said. "Because next time…"

A pause.

"…he might not just observe."

---

The room went quiet again.

---

Fiona looked down at her notebook one more time.

The words had faded.

But the feeling hadn't.

---

She closed it slowly.

---

Because now there were two things she couldn't ignore anymore:

---

The Blur—

which wanted to erase her.

---

And Adrian Cole—

who didn't.

---

And somehow…

she wasn't sure which one was more dangerous.
