Chapter 1 - chapter 1

The rain started before the shouting.

Kelly Warner stood outside the building, her fingers trembling as she clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. The screen had gone dark minutes ago, but her sister's voice still echoed in her ears.

"Kelly, please… they said if we don't pay tonight"

The call had cut off.

That was ten minutes ago.

Ten long, suffocating minutes.

Now she stood in front of Wayne Holdings, staring up at the towering glass building like it was something alive something dangerous.

Inside was the only man who could help her.

The only man she swore she would never beg.

Brooke Wayne.

Her chest tightened at the name.

Everyone in the city knew him. Powerful. Untouchable. Ruthless.

And to Kelly…

He was the man who destroyed her family.

The doors slid open automatically, and cold air brushed against her damp skin. For a second, she hesitated.

If you walk in there, there's no going back.

But then her sister's terrified voice replayed again.

That was all it took.

Kelly stepped inside.

The lobby was too quiet.

Too polished.

Too perfect.

Everything about it screamed money from the marble floors to the neatly dressed receptionist who looked up the moment Kelly approached.

"Do you have an appointment?" the woman asked, her voice calm, practiced.

Kelly shook her head. "I need to see Brooke Wayne."

The receptionist didn't even blink. "Mr. Wayne doesn't take walk-ins."

"I'm not leaving."

Now she looked slightly annoyed. "Miss"

"Tell him Kelly Warner is here."

The name hung in the air.

For the first time, the receptionist paused.

Something flickered across her face before she reached for the phone.

"Please wait."

Kelly's heartbeat quickened.

He remembers.

Of course he did.

How could he forget the daughter of the man he ruined?

The elevator ride felt longer than it should have.

Each floor number blinking above her head made her stomach twist tighter.

By the time the doors opened at the top floor, her legs felt weak.

A man in a suit was already waiting.

"This way," he said.

No smile. No questions.

Just silence.

They stopped in front of large double doors.

The man knocked once, then opened them without waiting for a reply.

"Miss Warner is here."

And then he stepped aside.

Kelly swallowed hard and walked in.

The office was massive.

Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched behind a sleek black desk, overlooking the entire city. It should have been beautiful.

Instead, it felt cold.

Intimidating.

Just like him.

Brooke Wayne stood by the window, his back turned to her, one hand in his pocket.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Didn't speak.

The silence pressed down on her like weight.

Then

"You've got nerve coming here."

His voice was low. Calm.

Dangerous.

Kelly's throat tightened, but she forced the words out.

"I wouldn't be here if I had another choice."

He turned slowly.

And for a second…

She forgot how to breathe.

He looked exactly the same.

Maybe worse.

Sharper. Colder. More controlled.

His eyes locked onto hers, unreadable.

"Kelly Warner," he said, like he was testing the name.

Like it meant nothing.

Her chest burned.

"You remember me."

A faint, almost invisible smirk touched his lips. "Hard to forget."

The insult was clear.

She ignored it.

"I need your help."

That got his attention.

Not surprise.

Not concern.

Interest.

"Help?" he repeated, walking closer. "From me?"

Each step he took made her want to step back.

But she didn't.

Couldn't.

"My sister," she said quickly. "She's in trouble. I need money."

He stopped in front of her.

Too close.

"And you came to me."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then...

"Why would I help you?" He asked staring at her

The question hit harder than she expected.

Because she knew the answer.

There was no reason.

Not after everything.

Still, she lifted her chin.

"I'll pay you back."

That made him chuckle.

A quiet, mocking sound.

"With what?" he asked. "You have nothing left."

Her stomach dropped.

He was right.

But she had one thing.

And she hated herself for it.

Her voice came out softer this time.

"I'll do anything."

Silence.

Heavy. Thick. Dangerous.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Anything?" he repeated smiling

Kelly nodded, even though her heart was pounding so hard it hurt.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Like he was thinking.

Calculating.

Then he stepped back, creating space between them but somehow making it worse.

"Fine," he said.

Hope flickered in her chest.

Too quickly.

"Thank you"

"Marry me."

The word hit her like a slap.

Everything went still.

"…What?"

His expression didn't change.

"You heard me."

Kelly stared at him, searching his face for any sign that he was joking.

There was none.

"You're insane."

"Possibly."

"This isn't funny."

"I'm not laughing."

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

"Why would you why me?"

He held her gaze.

And for the first time, something deeper flickered in his eyes.

Something she couldn't read.

"Because you came to me," he said simply.

"That's not a reason."

"It's enough."

"No," she shook her head, stepping back now. "No, I'm not doing that."

"Then leave."

The words were instant.

Cold.

Final.

"And deal with your problem on your own."

Her breath caught.

The image of her sister scared, trapped flashed in her mind.

She clenched her fists.

"You're blackmailing me."

"I'm offering you a solution."

"This is sick."

"And yet," he said quietly, "you're still here."

That silence again.

That unbearable silence.

Kelly's chest tightened.

Her options…

There were none.

Not anymore.

Slowly, painfully, she looked up at him.

"If I agree…" her voice trembled, "you'll help her?"

"Yes."

"Immediately?"

"Yes."

"No tricks?"

A pause.

Then

"I keep my word."

She searched his face.

Trying to find a lie.

But Brooke Wayne didn't look like a man who needed to lie.

That was almost worse.

Tears burned the back of her eyes, but she forced them down.

This wasn't the time to break.

This was the time to survive.

Her next words felt like they were tearing something inside her apart.

"…Okay."

The word barely came out.

But it was enough.

Something shifted in his expression.

Not surprise.

Not victory.

Something darker.

"Say it properly," he said.

Her heart dropped.

"What?"

"Say what you're agreeing to."

Humiliation burned through her.

But she did it anyway.

"I'll marry you."

Silence.

Then he nodded once.

"Good."

Just like that.

Like her life hadn't just changed forever.

He turned away, already reaching for his phone.

"I'll handle your sister."

Kelly stood there, frozen.

This was real.

This was happening.

"Wait," she said quickly.

He paused but didn't turn.

"What is this?" she asked. "A contract? A timeline? What do you want from me?"

Now he looked back.

And this time, there was no softness at all.

"A wife," he said.

Her stomach twisted.

"That's it?"

"For now."

Those two words sent a chill down her spine.

"For now?"

He held her gaze.

"We'll discuss the rest after the wedding."

The rain hadn't stopped when Kelly stepped out of the building.

But everything felt different now.

Heavier.

Like the world had shifted under her feet.

Her phone buzzed suddenly in her hand.

She answered immediately.

"Hello?"

"Kelly!"

Her knees nearly gave out at the sound of her sister's voice safe, unharmed.

"They let me go," she said quickly. "Someone paid everything"

Kelly closed her eyes.

Of course he had.

That fast.

That easily.

"Are you okay?" Kelly asked softly.

"I'm fine… but what did you do?"

Kelly looked back at the building one last time.

At the top floor.

At him.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

"I got help."

And just like that…

Kelly Warner had signed her life away.

To the man she hated most.

Without realizing…

He had been waiting for her all along.
