Chapter 90 - CHAPTER 90: The Doctrine of Effects

## CHAPTER 90: The Doctrine of Effects

Silas let out a soft, barely audible sigh. The sound was thin and ghostly, carried away instantly by the biting mountain breeze that swirled through the clearing. Internally, beneath the dense layers of his own calculated detachment, his mind reached a quiet conclusion. He recognized the pattern. Underneath all that defensive arrogance, underneath the layers of aristocratic pride and the obsessive, frantic hunger to unearth secrets, was a mind that genuinely wanted to learn. She wasn't just a spoiled noble looking for a shortcut to power; she was a genuine combatant who had realized the limits of her world and was desperate to transcend them.

"Very well," Silas said, his voice flat but carrying an undeniable weight that seemed to anchor the twilight air. "If you have the stomach to break what the capital has built inside your head, I will teach you. But I will not teach you a spell, Lyra. I am going to teach you something the academy would never dare teach on"

Lyra's analytical mind locked onto him instantly. Her crimson eyes narrowed slightly, her sharp wit parsing his words as she adjusted the leather straps of her gauntlets. "What do you mean by that? The academy covers every tier of elemental manipulation, from standard casting to high-order structural arrays."

t"They teach you how to mimic," Silas countered smoothly, his tone cold and clinical. "They teach you to mimic the past. What you are taught in those grand lecture halls—those precise incantations, those rigid magic circles, those standardized tiers of fire, water, and wind—are nothing but mere imitations. They are safe, diluted formulas created by ancient scholars so that average minds can produce predictable results without destroying themselves. It is how would I put it an assembly-line magic"

He paused, letting the weight of the heresy settle into the quiet courtyard. Lyra stood perfectly still, her heart thumping against her ribs. To call the pinnacle of royal magical education "assembly-line magic" was a statement that would get a person executed for treason in the capital. Yet, having just experienced the absolute reality of his domain, she couldn't find the words to contradict him.

"True sorcery," Silas continued, his crimson eyes glowing faintly in the dimming light, "does not come from an external formula written in a textbook. It comes from within, the mine and the soul. When a sorcerer pushes past the imitation and uncovers the raw, unfiltered essence of their own unique soul, they unlock what is called an **Effect**. Magical effects are the original, primal form of magic. It is a passive law that a mage imposes upon the reality around them, fueled entirely by who they are, not what they memorized."

He shifted his weight, his movements fluid and entirely silent.

"Caspian does not cast a freeze spell; his sword style carries the *Effect* of absolute desolation, pulling the heat out of existence because his spirit is hollow. Edna does not simply spark a flame; her presence carries the *Effect* of unyielding devastation, causing the very mana in the atmosphere to combust because her willpower is chaotic and violent. An Effect cannot be taught, Lyra. It can only be triggered by understanding the true nature of one's self. And from what I've seen so far, even you yourself don't know who you truly are?"

Without warning, Silas stepped off the wide, polished edge of the pristine white stone fountain.

He didn't float, and he didn't blur. He simply dropped down, his leather trousers shifting slightly as his boots met the stone pavement with a soft, distinct *thud*.

The sound was incredibly ordinary, yet it sent a violent shockwave of panic straight through Lyra's nervous system. Her boots instantly shifted into a defensive stance, her weight dropping low as her eyes widened. Her mind scrambled, entering a frantic, chaotic loop of self-doubt. *Is this real?* she asked herself, her teeth grinding together as her analytical senses frantically checked the environment. *Is he actually standing there, or am I still trapped inside the fog? Did he ever return to the fountain, or is this just another layer of the illusion designed to break my sanity?*

The boundary between reality and phantom had been completely erased. Every blade of grass in the towering walls of the maze, every ripple in the dark water behind him, and every shadow stretching across the courtyard felt simultaneously absolute and entirely fabricated. She was a top-tier student, a combatant who prided herself on reading the battlefield with flawless precision, and yet she was entirely blind to the ground she stood on.

Silas didn't give her time to resolve the paradox. He stood roughly seven paces away from her, his white hair catching the deep violet hues of the oncoming night. His casual shirt fluttered slightly in the mountain wind. His posture was completely open, his hands resting loosely at his sides, exposing his chest and torso entirely. He held no weapon. He didn't draw a breath to channel mana. He looked like an ordinary teenager standing in a garden, yet the invisible aura radiating from his solitary form felt like a mountain hanging precariously over her head by a single thread.

He took half a step forward, his chest completely exposed to her line of sight.

"Attack me," Silas commanded, his voice dropping into a low, serious octave that vibrated through the stones beneath her feet.

"Do not hold back. Strike me with everything you have. Attack me as hard as you possibly can, Lyra. Lets see if you can truly understand yourself"

Lyra's breath caught in her throat. The challenge was thrown down in the dead silence. The air grew freezing cold, the twilight sky turning a deep, suffocating purple above them, leaving her alone in the clearing with a monster who had just invited her to strike.
