Chapter 1 - The Message She Didn’t Expect

Tiana Blanks was having a peaceful evening.

Which was suspicious.

Peace never lasted long in her life.

She was halfway through arranging her room when her phone vibrated on the bed.

She ignored it.

It vibrated again.

She sighed dramatically.

"Why does technology always choose the wrong time?"

She picked it up.

One new message.

From: Jones Turner

Her heart did a small unnecessary jump.

She opened it.

Jones:

We need to talk. I've been thinking… and I don't think I'm ready for commitment. I care about you, but I can't give you what you deserve.

Silence.

Tiana stared at the screen.

Then blinked.

Then read it again.

Because sometimes the brain refuses to accept emotional damage the first time.

"I see," she murmured.

No dramatic crying.

No screaming.

Just that quiet sentence.

In the kitchen, Jeffery Hall was making tea.

"You look like someone just lost a lottery they never entered," he said casually.

Tiana handed him the phone without a word.

Jeffery read the message slowly.

Then looked at her.

Then at the message again.

"Oh," he said softly. "That kind of conversation."

Tiana crossed her arms.

"So he's not ready."

Jeffery nodded carefully.

"Yes."

She tilted her head.

"After five years?"

Jeffery didn't answer.

Because some truths don't need extra commentary.

Tiana walked to the window.

Outside, the sky was painted in peach and warm gold, fading into soft blue.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Completely unrelated to her emotional situation.

She let out a small breath.

"I thought love was supposed to grow," she said quietly.

Jeffery replied gently, "It does. But only when both people are willing to grow in the same direction."

That sentence settled in her chest.

Jones cared for her.

That was obvious.

But caring was not the same as choosing.

And commitment… meant choice.

Tiana remembered all the times she waited.

All the times she adjusted.

All the times she understood him.

Maybe too much.

She looked at her reflection in the glass.

Quiet girl.

Loyal girl.

Deeply emotional girl.

But somewhere along the way…

She had forgotten herself.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message from Jones.

Jones:

Please don't think this means I don't care. I do. I just need space.

Space.

Tiana almost laughed.

"Space," she repeated softly. "Funny. I gave him my whole heart, and he needs space."

Jeffery raised an eyebrow. "You're not angry?"

She paused.

Was she?

Not exactly.

She was tired.

And maybe a little relieved.

Because deep down, she had always felt the imbalance.

She turned to Jeffery.

"Maybe this is the moment I stop waiting."

Jeffery smiled slightly.

"That sounds like growth."

Tiana looked back at her phone.

Not with pain this time.

But with clarity.

Jones wasn't a villain.

He wasn't cruel.

He simply couldn't give what she needed.

And love without commitment…

Was like a song without rhythm.

It sounded nice.

But it never became music.

Tiana deleted the message thread from her notifications.

Not to erase him.

But to silence the constant hope.

Then she whispered to herself:

"If he can't choose me… I will choose myself."

Outside, the sunset deepened.

And somewhere in her chest, something shifted.

Not broken.

Not healed.

Just beginning.
