Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

The sun had barely risen, but the Montgomery mansion was already alive with activity. Servants scurried about, polishing marble, arranging breakfast, and ensuring everything looked flawless. I, however, was in my room, pacing nervously. Today was Charles' second day at school, and though he'd survived yesterday, I knew the real challenges were just beginning.

I smoothed my hair, glanced at the clock, and whispered to myself: "He's going to be fine. He has to be… I can't let anything ruin this."

The School Struggle

By mid-morning, Charles was already facing the chaos of high school life. Papers scattered from his backpack, a stern teacher lectured him for being late, and a group of classmates whispered and laughed at his slightly disheveled appearance.

He sighed, clutching his books, muttering under his breath: "Why does everyone here seem… so confident? I feel like a mistake waiting to happen."

Little did he know, I had anticipated this. I had spent last night secretly preparing a small stack of study guides, notes, and snacks for him. Sliding them into his bag, I left a folded note:

"Even if the world thinks you're clumsy, you're stronger than you know. Don't forget me. A"

When he opened it between classes, his eyes softened, and a small smile appeared. For a brief moment, I could feel our bond stretch across the distance between the mansion and his classroom.

The Sister's Suspicion

Meanwhile, Evelyn had been observing from the mansion or, more accurately, from the sidelines of his school's social grapevine. She couldn't explain why, but something about Charles didn't sit right with her.

"He's too polished. Too charming. Too… smooth," she muttered as she scrolled through her phone, keeping tabs on every movement he made. "And Anabelle… she's too blinded by him. One day, she'll regret trusting him."

Evelyn's hatred was not just envy it was intuition, a sense that this boy, while polite and hard-working, had a hidden side. And though she had no proof, that nagging instinct sharpened her every glance, every warning whispered to Anabelle.

The Mansion Drama

Back at home, I found myself sneaking money into Charles' bag for lunch, ensuring he had a warm meal, even though my parents believed I was studying in my room.

"Why do you risk so much for him?" Evelyn asked suddenly, appearing behind me like a shadow. Her eyes were sharp, suspicious.

"I… I care about him," I said simply. "Is that so wrong?"

Evelyn's lips pressed together. "Caring is fine. Blind devotion… dangerous."

I rolled my eyes. "You worry too much. He's just a boy… a kind, hardworking, funny boy. That's it."

She shook her head, unconvinced. "There's more to him, Anabelle. I can feel it. One day, you'll see."

I ignored her, slipping the envelope into my bag and heading for the door. Even though she didn't understand, she couldn't stop me. Not yet.

Charles' First Small Victory

The afternoon passed slowly. Charles struggled with math, accidentally spilled ink on his notebook, and almost got scolded by the head teacher for a minor misunderstanding. But then… a breakthrough.

During a group project, he offered an idea that no one else had considered. His classmates, who had mocked him earlier, now nodded in respect.

He walked home later, exhausted but smiling. When I met him at the mansion gate, I couldn't hide my pride.

"You did amazing!" I said, handing him a small sandwich I had packed. "I knew you could do it."

He chuckled, brushing crumbs off his uniform. "I… didn't think I'd survive the first week. But your note… it kept me going. Thank you."

I felt a warmth spread through me. "I'll always support you. No matter what."

A Glimpse of Danger

That evening, Evelyn lingered near the staircase, watching him from afar. She noticed the way Charles smiled at me, the subtle confidence in his movements, and the flicker of something darker behind his eyes.

"He's hiding something," she whispered to herself. "I don't know what… but I'll prove it. One day, he'll reveal his true face. And Anabelle… she won't be ready."

Her gaze lingered as Charles laughed at one of my jokes. She clenched her fists, frustrated at being powerless.

Later that night, I lay awake, thinking about him. Charles… the boy my parents employed, the one Evelyn hated, the one I risked everything for. I smiled, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face.

Little did I know… school challenges, family suspicion, and hidden dangers were only the beginning.

And the boy I loved, the boy I trusted, had secrets… secrets that would one day shake my world to its very core.
