The earth did not simply crack.
It tore open.
Stone split with a grinding roar that echoed through the clearing. The ancient ruins trembled violently as glowing blue fractures spread across the ground like lightning frozen in rock.
Kael stumbled backward.
"Okay—this is bad!" he shouted.
Wind burst upward from the opening as though the forest itself had exhaled after holding its breath for centuries. Dust and glowing spores filled the air.
The Crimson Ash warriors moved instantly.
Steel flashed as swords were drawn.
Valen stepped in front of the group, blade raised, golden eyes locked on the widening fissure.
"Form a perimeter!" he ordered.
The warriors spread out with practiced precision.
Kael grabbed Mira's arm and pulled her farther back.
"Reminder," he said quickly, "this is officially the worst idea I've ever had."
Mira didn't answer.
She was staring at the ground.
The cracks had stopped spreading.
For a moment everything went still again.
Then something moved beneath the surface.
A massive shadow shifted under the glowing stone.
The ground bulged upward.
Kael's stomach dropped.
"Oh no."
The stone exploded outward.
A colossal shape pushed up through the shattered ruins, sending fragments of ancient pillars flying through the air. Blue energy surged around the creature like a storm.
It rose slowly.
Massive.
Towering.
Ancient.
When the dust cleared, Kael finally saw it.
And his brain struggled to understand what he was looking at.
The creature looked like a giant made of stone.
Not carved stone.
Living stone.
Its body was formed from massive plates of cracked rock layered together like armor. Ancient glowing runes pulsed between the cracks, the same blue light that filled the ruins.
Its arms were enormous pillars of granite.
Its head resembled a weathered statue with glowing eyes burning deep within the stone.
Vines and roots hung from its shoulders as though the forest had grown over it during its long sleep.
The creature slowly straightened.
Standing nearly twenty feet tall.
Kael whispered,
"...That's not friendly."
The giant moved its head.
Stone ground against stone with a deep, ancient sound.
Its glowing eyes turned toward the group.
The forest went silent.
Then the giant spoke.
Its voice sounded like mountains shifting.
"Who awakens the guardian?"
Kael froze.
"Did… did the rock just talk?"
One of the Crimson Ash warriors murmured quietly,
"Ancient constructs."
Valen stepped forward slowly.
He lowered his sword slightly but did not sheath it.
"We did not come to disturb this place."
The giant's glowing gaze shifted toward him.
"The seal was broken."
Its massive stone hand lifted slowly.
Blue light pulsed through its body.
"The relic was returned."
Kael nervously raised one hand.
"Hi. That was… technically me."
Every warrior in the clearing turned to look at him.
Kael winced.
"Sorry."
The guardian's glowing eyes focused on the pedestal ruins.
The red pendant still rested within the shattered stone, glowing faintly.
The giant stared at it for several seconds.
Then it spoke again.
"The Fireleaf Sigil has awakened."
Mira blinked.
"The what?"
Kael pointed at the pendant.
"This thing?"
The guardian slowly lowered its gaze toward him.
"Bearer of the sigil… step forward."
Kael immediately pointed at Valen.
"Actually he's the leader—"
Valen did not even look at him.
"Step forward."
Kael sighed.
"Of course."
He walked toward the massive creature, trying very hard not to think about how easily it could flatten him.
Each step echoed in the silent clearing.
When he reached the broken pedestal, the pendant lifted slightly into the air.
As if pulled by invisible threads.
It floated gently back into Kael's hand.
The moment he touched it—
The guardian's runes flared brighter.
Blue light spread across its body like rivers of energy.
The creature studied him.
For a long time.
Kael shifted awkwardly.
"Uh… good evening?"
The guardian spoke slowly.
"You are not the one who forged the sigil."
Kael nodded.
"Correct."
"You are not one of the ancient keepers."
"Also correct."
The guardian tilted its head slightly.
"Then why does the relic answer your call?"
Kael held up both hands.
"I would love to know that too."
Behind him, Mira tried not to laugh.
The guardian stared at him silently.
Then its glowing eyes dimmed slightly.
"Strange."
Kael relaxed a little.
"Glad we agree."
Valen stepped closer.
"Guardian," he said carefully, "this relic was given to him by a village elder."
The stone giant turned its gaze toward him.
"The sigil was lost centuries ago."
A ripple of quiet tension passed through the warriors.
Valen's voice grew sharper.
"Lost?"
The guardian nodded slowly.
"When the war of embers ended… the sigils were scattered."
Kael frowned.
"Okay hold on."
He raised the pendant.
"You keep saying sigils. What exactly is this thing?"
The giant studied the glowing leaf.
"A key."
Kael blinked.
"A key to what?"
The guardian did not answer immediately.
Instead it lifted one massive stone arm and pointed toward the distant mountains beyond the forest.
Far away.
Barely visible through the trees.
"To the gates that must never open again."
Silence filled the clearing.
Kael looked at Mira.
Mira looked at Kael.
Then Kael slowly turned back to the giant.
"…That sounds extremely important."
The guardian nodded.
"It is."
Valen's expression had grown darker.
"How many of these sigils exist?"
"Seven."
Kael groaned softly.
"Of course it's seven."
The guardian continued.
"Each one binds a seal placed by the ancient orders."
Mira frowned.
"Seals for what?"
The guardian's voice became quieter.
But heavier.
"For something that once nearly destroyed this world."
The wind stirred the trees.
The Whispering Forest seemed to listen.
Kael stared at the pendant again.
"So you're saying I accidentally activated one of the most important magical locks in existence?"
"Correct."
Kael rubbed his temples.
"Fantastic."
One of the warriors suddenly stepped forward.
"Commander."
Valen turned.
The warrior pointed toward the forest.
Faint movement flickered between the distant trees.
Not animals.
Something else.
Valen's eyes sharpened instantly.
"How many?"
"Multiple."
Kael looked around nervously.
"What now?"
Then the guardian spoke again.
"They have come."
The ground trembled slightly beneath its massive weight.
Kael blinked.
"Who has?"
The guardian's glowing eyes burned brighter.
"Those who seek the sigils."
Valen's voice turned deadly calm.
"Hunters."
Kael's stomach sank.
"Please tell me that doesn't mean what I think it means."
Mira unsheathed her blade.
"It does."
Dark shapes began appearing between the trees at the edge of the clearing.
Silent.
Moving quickly.
At least a dozen figures emerged from the shadows.
All wearing black armor etched with crimson markings.
Their cloaks moved like shadows in the wind.
Each carried curved blades that shimmered faintly with dark energy.
Kael whispered,
"Oh come on. Already?"
One of the hunters stepped forward.
His helmet hid his face, but his voice was cold.
"You have something that belongs to our master."
Valen stepped forward.
"No."
The hunter tilted his head.
"Then we will take it."
Kael sighed.
"Of course you will."
The hunters moved instantly.
Steel flashed.
The Crimson Ash warriors met them head-on.
The clearing exploded into combat.
Swords clashed.
Energy crackled.
Kael ducked as two fighters crashed past him.
"Why is it always chaos right after I touch mysterious objects?!"
Mira blocked a hunter's strike and kicked him backward.
"Less talking!"
Kael grabbed a fallen spear from the ground.
"Right!"
But before the battle could fully erupt—
The guardian moved.
Its massive stone foot slammed into the ground.
The impact sent a shockwave across the clearing.
Hunters and warriors alike staggered.
The giant's glowing eyes burned like twin stars.
"None shall claim the sigil."
It raised both enormous arms.
Blue energy surged through the ruins.
Massive chunks of stone lifted into the air.
The hunters hesitated.
One of them shouted,
"Destroy the construct!"
Several hunters launched glowing projectiles toward the guardian.
Dark energy bolts slammed into its stone body.
Cracks spread across its chest.
But the guardian did not fall.
Instead—
It roared.
The sound was like a mountain collapsing.
The floating stones shot forward like meteors.
Hunters were thrown backward as the ancient construct unleashed its power.
Kael stared in shock.
"Okay… rock guy is awesome."
Valen cut down one attacker and shouted,
"Protect the bearer!"
Three warriors immediately moved to guard Kael.
Kael pointed at himself.
"I feel very important and very endangered right now!"
More hunters poured into the clearing.
Too many.
Valen's expression hardened.
"We cannot hold them forever."
Mira stepped beside Kael.
"Any brilliant ideas?"
Kael looked at the pendant.
It was glowing again.
Brighter than before.
Almost pulsing.
Then he noticed something strange.
The guardian's runes were responding to it.
Every pulse of the pendant made the construct stronger.
Kael's eyes widened.
"Oh."
Mira noticed.
"What?"
Kael raised the pendant.
"I think this thing powers him!"
Valen shouted across the battlefield.
"Then keep it safe!"
Kael swallowed.
"No pressure!"
The guardian smashed two hunters aside with a single swing of its massive arm.
But more kept coming.
Dark blades slashed across its stone legs.
Cracks spread across its body.
The construct was powerful—
But it was also ancient.
And weakening.
Kael looked down at the pendant again.
It pulsed faster.
Almost like it was reacting to the battle.
Or warning him.
Then the guardian's voice echoed in his mind.
Not spoken aloud.
But heard clearly.
Bearer…
Kael froze.
"Uh… did anyone else hear that?"
Mira was busy blocking an attack.
"No!"
The voice continued.
The sigil is awakening.
Kael whispered,
"That sounds dangerous."
You must run.
Kael blinked.
"What?"
They will not stop coming.
Another massive crack split across the guardian's shoulder.
The construct staggered slightly.
The sigil has chosen you.
Kael's heart pounded.
"Chosen me for what?!"
The guardian's eyes burned brighter.
To finish what the ancient keepers began.
Kael stared at the battlefield.
Warriors clashing.
Hunters advancing.
The guardian slowly breaking.
His voice trembled.
"I don't know how to do that!"
The guardian replied quietly.
You will learn.
Then it slammed both fists into the ground.
The clearing exploded with blinding blue light.
Every hunter was thrown backward.
Valen shouted,
"Move!"
Mira grabbed Kael's arm.
"Time to go!"
Kael looked back once more at the towering stone guardian standing between them and the enemy.
The construct met his gaze.
Its voice echoed one last time.
Run, bearer of the Fireleaf.
And Kael realized something terrifying.
This was only the beginning.
