Chapter 40 - Chapter 38: The Fractured Bonds

The streetlights flickered outside as Kashvi stepped into the darkened hallway of her home. The echo of her footsteps reverberating against the polished marble floors. She had just returned from a long day at work. Her mind still buzzing with thoughts of deadlines and meetings. But as she crossed the threshold a sense of unease settled over her. Her parents were away at the Berlin conference leaving behind an empty house that felt more like a trap than a sanctuary. As she climbed the stairs the muffled sound of music drifted down from the upper floor. It was a lively tune celebrating the festival of lights yet it felt out of place in the sombre atmosphere of her home. Kashvi hesitated for a moment. Her hand on the banister before pushing open the door to the party that Rishit had arranged. What greeted her was a scene that made her stomach churn. The room was adorned with colourful lights and festive decorations but the presence of several scantily clad foreigner female escorts turned the celebration into something sordid. Rishit her older brother stood at the centre, surrounded by his friends laughter spilling out like a poisoned chalice. "Hey, Kashvi! You made it!" Rishit called out. His voice dripping with feigned enthusiasm. "Join us! We're just getting started!" Kashvi forced a smile masking her discomfort. "Looks like quite the party, Rishit," she replied. Her tone laced with sarcasm. Just then one of Rishit's business partners, a man named Vikram approached her with a predatory glint in his eye. "Kashvi, you look stunning tonight," he said, leaning closer than necessary. The scent of alcohol wafted off him making her recoil slightly. "Thanks but I'm not here for the festivities," she said attempting to sidestep him. "Oh, come on. Don't be such a buzz kill," Vikram insisted stepping closer. His hand brushed against the side of her bust. His intentions clear. "Why don't we have some fun together? I could show you a good time." Kashvi felt a surge of anger rise within her. "Get your hands off me!" she snapped trying to push him away. But he didn't relent. Instead he tightened his grip. A smirk playing on his lips. "Come on, Kashvi. You know it's all in good fun. Rishit wouldn't mind," he said. His voice dripping with condescension. "Rishit wouldn't mind?" Her voice trembled with rage. "What do you mean by that?" Vikram leaned in closer. His voice a whisper. "He thinks it would be good for business if you married a man like me. A strong man. Think of the benefits." Kashvi's heart raced and without even thinking she shoved him with all her might. The push turned into a scuffle and soon they were grappling. Her desperation fuelling her strength. She managed to break free and dashed toward Rishit's room slamming the door behind her. The moment she entered she found Rishit lounging on his bed flanked by two of his friends. "What's wrong?" he asked, looking up in surprise. "Your friend just tried to…" Kashvi began but Rishit cut her off with a wave of his hand dismissing her words. "Stop overreacting, Kashvi. It's just a party. You need to lighten up." "I need to lighten up?" She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "You think it's okay for Vikram to touch me like that? To speak about my future like I'm some sort of commodity?" Rishit's expression hardened. "You're being dramatic. I'm just trying to help you. You need someone stable in your life." "Stable?" She laughed bitterly. "You mean someone who can further your business interests? Is that what I am to you? A pawn in your game?"

"Enough!" Rishit shouted rising to his feet. In a flash he slapped her across the face. The sting radiated through her cheek and shock froze her in place. Kashvi's pulse quickened and without thinking she retaliated. Her palm connecting sharply with his face. "How dare you !" she hissed. "If any of your friends try to touch me again, I swear I will end my life. And I will make sure you reach hell long before I do!" Rishit's eyes widened. His bravado faltering for a moment. "You don't mean that." "Oh, but I do," she spat. Tears of fury brimming in her eyes. "You've crossed a line Rishit. If you think I'm going to let you dictate my life or allow your friends to trample on my dignity then you are sorely mistaken." The silence in the room was palpable. It was thick with the weight of their confrontation. Rishit looked around. His friends watching with a mix of amusement and concern. But Kashvi didn't care. She felt a fire igniting within her with a determination to reclaim her autonomy. "I will not be your puppet," she declared. Her voice steady. "And if you continue down this path you won't have a sister left to worry about." With that she stormed out of the room leaving behind the echoes of their shattered relationship. The festival of lights might be glowing brightly outside but within her darkness began to settle. A darkness that promised to unravel everything she thought she knew about family loyalty and the price of ambition.
