Chapter 20 - Chapter 18: A Veil Of Deception

The sterile scent of antiseptic filled the air. Asmee's eyelids fluttered open blinking against the pungent and sharp odour under harsh fluorescent lights. She struggled to piece together the fragmented memories of the past few days. Where was she? What had happened? Panic surged through her as she tried to sit up but a wave of dizziness forced her back down. "Easy now," a soft voice soothed and Asmee turned to see a nurse hovering over her. Concern etched across her face. "You're in the hospital. You've had quite a time." "Hospital?" Asmee croaked. Her throat dry and scratchy. "What…what happened to me?" Asmee is too curious. The nurse's expression faltered. A fleeting look of pity crossing her features before she quickly masked it. "You need to rest. The doctors are working hard to…you delivered a baby" The nurse hesitated glancing toward the door as if expecting someone to enter. "I'll get the doctor," she said finally slipping away from the room. "Baby? What? I was pregnant? Where is my baby?" Asmee interrupted as her voice rising with urgency. Asmee's heart raced. The last thing she remembered was the pain. The unimaginable agony that had consumed her leaving her in a haze of confusion and despair. Had she really given a birth? The thought sent chills down her spine. She felt empty and hollow. She was terrified by the uncertainty of her situation. Moments later Tushant strode into the room. His demeanour polished and composed. A disarming smile plastered on his face. "Asmee, darling," he said with a smooth voice like honey. "You're awake! Thank God."

"Tushant?" she murmured. Her brow furrowing. "Where's my baby?" His smile faltered for just an instant replaced by an expression that was almost too rehearsed. "The baby is…well, it's complicated. Let's focus on you for now. You've been through so much." Asmee's heart sank. "No. I want to see my child. Please, Tushant!" He stepped closer lowering his voice as he leaned in. "Listen, I'll make sure everything is taken care of. But right now, you need to rest. Your health is critical, and the baby…" His voice trailed off. The weight of unspoken words heavy in the air. "Is the baby okay?" Asmee pressed. Desperation lacing her tone. Tushant hesitated and then straightened up feigning confidence. "We're doing everything we can to save the premature child. But I promise you, I'll keep this all a secret. For your family's honour, we can't let anyone know about…about the circumstances surrounding the birth." Asmee felt a knot tighten in her stomach. "What do you mean? What's wrong with my baby?" Before Tushant could respond the nurse returned followed by Dr. Mehta. The doctor's expression was grim and Asmee's heart plummeted at the sight of him. "Asmee," he began, his voice steady but filled with gravity. "We need to talk about your condition and the baby ." "What's going on?" she demanded, fear creeping into her voice. "Is the baby alive?" Dr. Mehta exchanged a brief look with Tushant, who nodded imperceptibly. "The baby is in critical condition," he said, choosing his words carefully. "We're doing everything we can, but…" "But what?" Asmee's voice quivered, tears pooling in her eyes. "The nursing staff hasn't detected any respiration…" Dr. Mehta's voice faded as Asmee felt the world tilt beneath her.

"No! You have to save my baby!" she cried, a sense of panic surging through her. "You can't let this happen!" "Please, Asmee," Tushant interjected placing a comforting hand on her shoulder though it felt more like a restraining grip. "Let the doctors do their jobs. We'll figure this out." But Aabida Sheikh the head nurse stood quietly in the corner. Her arms crossed and her brow furrowed in concentration, as she watched the baby in the incubator. At forty she had seen her fair share of tragedies yet something about this case felt different. She had a gnawing sense of injustice stirred within her. She caught Tushant's eye and he shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. Aabida had worked too long in the hospital to be fooled by charm or pretence. She had seen Tushant's kind before. These men who wielded power like a weapon using it to manipulate those around them. "Dr. Mehta, can I have a word?" Aabida asked, her voice steady as she approached the doctor. "Of course," he replied while stepping aside. As they moved to a quieter corner Aabida lowered her voice. "Something isn't right here. I've been observing the baby since it arrived and I don't believe it's dead. We need to check again. The staff.." "Aabida, we're under a lot of pressure. Tushant.." "I don't care about Tushant!" she interrupted. Her frustration boiling over. "This is about a life, a child who deserves a chance. We must do everything we can." Dr. Mehta hesitated was torn between professional duty and the looming shadow of Tushant's authority. "You know how he is. He doesn't want any complications. If he finds out…" "He won't find out if we act quickly," Aabida insisted. "We owe it to that child." Meanwhile Tushant had returned to Asmee's side. His demeanour shifting to one of practiced sympathy. "Asmee, you need to rest. I'll take care of everything else," he said. His voice dripping with false reassurance. "Promise me you'll protect my baby," Asmee pleaded, her eyes wide with fear. "Of course," Tushant replied though a flicker of something darker crossed his features as he glanced back at Aabida and Dr. Mehta. "I'll see to it that no one knows about the baby's situation. It'll be our little secret." With that he turned leaving Asmee feeling more alone than ever. The weight of his words pressed heavily on her chest. She couldn't shake the feeling that something sinister lurked beneath the surface a web of deceit woven tightly around her and her child. In the ICU Aabida stood resolute. Her heart pounding as she prepared to fight for the life of the new-born. She knew that the battle ahead would not only be against time but also against the manipulation of those who sought to bury the truth. With every ounce of strength she would do everything in her power to ensure that this fateful night had changed Asmee's life forever and make sure that her life would not end in tragedy.
