Cherreads

Chapter 22 - Chapter 20: Shadow Of Dread

The air hung thick with the scent of antiseptic and despair as Aabida paced the dimly lit corridor of the hospital. Her heart raced like a rhythmic drumbeat echoing her unease. She had always possessed an uncanny ability to sense danger like the kind that prickled at the back of her neck like the whisper of a ghost. Today that instinct screamed at her. "Stay calm, Aabida," she muttered under her breath, her voice barely more than a whisper. She stopped by a window peering outside. Her eyes scanning the bustling street below. That's when she saw two men loitering near the entrance. Their expressions shrouded in shadows but their intent unmistakable. They were watching and waiting. The realization hit her like a cold wave that they were hunting for the baby. Her thoughts spiralled recalling her worst fears. The baby was alive and hidden away from those who would do it harm yet news had a way of spreading like wildfire. Tushant with his merciless motivations would not even hesitate to snuff out the fragile light of innocence if he learned the truth. Panic surged through her veins as she considered the implications. The child must remain hidden at all costs. With trembling fingers Aabida retrieved her phone from her pocket. She dialled a familiar number. The digits etched in her memory from years of association with the orphanage named Fazalbhoy Ahmedbhoy Yateemkhana. It was a place she trusted. It was a sanctuary for those abandoned by fate. "Hello? Is this Aabida?" the voice on the other end crackled filled with warmth and concern. "Yes, it's me, Rahim. I need your help," she said. Urgency lacing her tone. "There are men looking for a baby… they think it's dead but it's alive. I can't explain everything now but I need you to meet me. It's crucial."

"Where are you?" Rahim asked. His voice suddenly serious. "I'm at the hospital. Please, hurry." Aabida ended the call and took a deep breath steeling herself. She glanced around the corridor. She was aware that every second counted. Asmee her closest friend remained oblivious to the impending threat as she was lost in the depths of her sorrow believing she had lost her child in a miscarriage. The thought twisted Aabida's heart but she couldn't let Asmee's grief cloud her judgment. She sneaked out of the hospital. Her footsteps silent against the cold tiles. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead casting eerie shadows that danced along the walls. Outside the evening air was cool and fragrant. A stark contrast to the sterile environment she left behind. She hurriedly scanned the area ensuring the men hadn't followed her. "Rahim!" she called softly as she spotted him leaning against a lamppost. His eyes darting around for any signs of trouble. "Aabida, are you sure about this?" he asked, concern etching lines on his forehead. "We don't have much time. They're looking for the baby. I need you to take her to the orphanage. No one can know she's alive." Aabida carefully unwrapped the bundle she had concealed beneath her shawl revealing the sleeping infant nestled within. Rahim's eyes widened. "Where did you find her?" "It doesn't matter right now. Just take her. Please!" Aabida implored. Her voice thick with emotion. He nodded, his expression resolute. "I'll protect her with my life." As Rahim cradled the baby Aabida felt a surge of relief mixed with lingering dread. "Make sure no one knows. If Tushant finds out…" Aabida sobbed. "I understand. I'll be discreet," Rahim promised with his voice low but firm. Aabida watched as he melted into the shadows. Her heart racing with a mix of hope and fear. She turned back toward the hospital where Asmee waited blissfully unaware of the storm brewing just outside her door. Inside Asmee sat in a sterile room. Her eyes red-rimmed and hollow from tears. The doctor had delivered the crushing news and she was trapped in a world of grief. She was unable to escape the haunting reality of her loss. "Aabida?" Asmee's voice trembled as she caught sight of her friend. "Is it true? Did I really lose my baby?" Aabida swallowed lumps hard forcing a smile that felt like shards of glass in her throat. "Asmee, I…" "Don't lie to me! I can't bear it. I need to know the truth!" "It's complicated…Asmee. I promise I'll explain everything soon," Aabida said. Her heart breaking at the sight of her friend's anguish. "But right now, you need to stay strong. I'm here for you." Asmee looked up. Her eyes searching Aabida's face for answers. "You're hiding something from me, aren't you?" "No, I swear. Let's just focus on getting you better," Aabida replied. She was feeling the weight of deception settle heavily on her shoulders. As she held Asmee's gaze Aabida knew that the battle was far from over. Danger lurked in the shadows. She had to protect the innocent lives entwined in this dark web. With every decision she ventured deeper into the abyss determined to shield her friend and the child from the encroaching darkness. In this game of survival trust was a fragile thread and Aabida would do whatever it took to keep it from unravelling.
