Chapter 40 - Chapter 76-77

Chapter 76 – A Message for the Observers

Budapest, Hungary – Jason and Ziva's Hotel

Night had fallen over Budapest, and the city was illuminated by vibrant lights reflecting off the Danube River.

High above one of the city's most elegant hotels, Jason Gibbs and Ziva David sat on the balcony of their suite, taking in the view.

However, the atmosphere between them was far from tranquil.

Ziva held a glass of red wine, her eyes fixed on the horizon, while Jason turned his cell phone in his hands, lost in thought.

"So… we were followed all day," Jason commented, his voice devoid of emotion.

Ziva raised an eyebrow and took a sip of wine before replying.

"It was obvious that would happen. You and I together attract too much attention."

Jason sighed and shook his head.

"First it was that Forrester guy, then I noticed a Hungarian intelligence officer leaving the restaurant."

Ziva set her glass down on the table and crossed her arms.

"What bothers me isn't the fact that we're being watched. It's the audacity of them thinking they can monitor us without us noticing."

Jason smiled slightly, recognizing his wife's sharp tone.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Ziva smiled mischievously.

"How about we give them a polite warning to leave us alone?"

Jason picked up his cell phone and quickly dialed a number.

"I have exactly the right person for that."

Jason called a contact at the Pentagon.

After a few rings, a familiar voice answered.

"Gibbs. I haven't heard your voice in a long time."

Jason smiled.

"General Donovan. How's Washington?"

The general chuckled briefly.

"If you're calling me, I bet you need something."

Jason got straight to the point.

"I'm in Budapest with my wife. The FBI and Hungarian intelligence are following us. I want them to stop."

On the other end of the line, the general was silent for a few seconds before answering.

"You and Ziva are big names. Maybe they have reason to keep an eye on you."

Jason spoke firmly.

"We're not here on business. We want privacy. Can you make that happen?"

The general sighed.

"I'll make a few calls."

Jason smiled.

"Thank you."

He hung up and looked at Ziva.

"Now it's your turn."

Ziva picked up her own phone and dialed a number she hadn't used in a long time.

After a few seconds, a male voice answered.

"David. What a surprise."

Ziva smiled slightly.

"Eliav, I need a favor."

Eliav was one of Mossad's top intelligence officers in Europe.

"Go ahead."

"We're being watched here in Budapest. FBI and local intelligence. I want the Hungarians to receive a warning to leave us alone."

On the other end of the line, Eliav made a thoughtful sound.

"Ziva, even for you, that's a big request."

"I'm not asking you to do anything illegal. Just send a message."

There was a pause before Eliav replied.

"Consider it done."

Ziva smiled contentedly.

"Thank you."

She hung up and looked at Jason.

"Now we just have to wait."

At Fly Team headquarters, Scott Forrester was reviewing reports when his phone rang.

He answered, and the FBI deputy director's voice sounded firm.

"Forrester, I need you and your team to stop monitoring Jason Gibbs and Ziva David immediately."

Forrester frowned.

"Sir?" With all due respect, they are people of high interest.

The director's voice showed no patience.

"The Pentagon just called us. They want us to leave Gibbs and David alone."

Forrester snorted, frustrated.

"Understood."

He hung up and looked at his team.

"Change of plans. We're not following them anymore."

Kellett raised an eyebrow.

"What happened?"

Forrester threw the phone on the table.

"Someone more powerful than us told us to back down."

Meanwhile, at Hungarian intelligence headquarters, the local director received an unexpected visit from an Israeli diplomat.

"What can I do for you?" asked the director, surprised by the visit.

The diplomat handed over a sealed envelope.

"This is a direct message from Mossad."

The director took the envelope and opened it.

There was only one sentence written in Hebrew:

"Leave Gibbs and David alone."

The director swallowed hard, knowing that ignoring this warning would not be a good idea.

He picked up the phone and called his agents.

"Abort the surveillance. Now."

The next morning, Jason and Ziva were having breakfast on the hotel balcony when Jason received a message from General Donovan.

"As requested, no one else will bother you. Enjoy your honeymoon."

Almost at the same time, Ziva received a message from Eliav.

"The Hungarians have been notified. You and Jason can now walk around the city without worry."

Ziva smiled, satisfied, and showed her phone to Jason.

He read the message and smiled slightly.

"Mission accomplished."

Ziva took a sip of coffee and crossed her legs.

"Now we can finally enjoy Budapest.

Jason took her hand and intertwined their fingers.

"No shadows watching us."

Ziva smiled softly.

"Just the two of us."

And, for the first time since they arrived, they felt truly free to enjoy the city.

Chapter 77 – The Charm of Budapest and the Return Home

A Serene Morning in Budapest

The rising sun bathed the streets of Budapest in a golden hue, reflecting on the calm waters of the Danube.

High on the balcony of one of the city's most luxurious hotels, Jason and Ziva sat side by side, savoring a tranquil breakfast.

The tray in front of them displayed a variety of breads, fine cheeses, fresh fruits, and a small portion of palacsinta, the famous Hungarian pancakes filled with walnut and chocolate cream.

Ziva took a piece and tasted it, closing her eyes for a moment.

"This is incredible."

Jason smiled as he watched her enjoy the food.

"So far, everything we've eaten on this trip has been spectacular."

She nodded, wiping the corner of her mouth with a napkin.

"This was definitely a perfect choice for our honeymoon."

Jason took a sip of coffee and gazed at the horizon, observing the imposing Hungarian Parliament on the opposite bank of the river.

"We still have a few hours before our flight. How about one last stroll?"

Ziva raised an eyebrow thoughtfully.

"I think that's a great idea. We can walk around Buda Castle one more time."

Jason smiled.

"Then that's what we'll do."

Walking hand in hand through the cobblestone streets, Jason and Ziva savored their last moments in the city.

Buda Castle stood majestically atop the hill, its impressive architecture and centuries of history.

They passed tourists taking photos, couples admiring the view, and street performers playing traditional Hungarian music.

Jason pointed to a group of children running around a fountain.

"It reminds me of when I was a child."

Ziva looked at him curiously.

— Were you the type to run around getting into mischief?

Jason laughed.

— Always. My father would go crazy trying to keep me under control.

Ziva smiled, squeezing his hand lightly.

— I imagine so. You've had that adventurous spirit since you were little.

They continued walking until they reached a spot that offered a panoramic view of all of Budapest.

Ziva leaned against the wall and took a deep breath, engraving that moment in her memory.

— This city has something special.

Jason hugged her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

— Yes, it does. But you know what's even more special?

She turned her face slightly towards him.

— What?

He smiled.

— The fact that it doesn't matter where we are, as long as we're together.

Ziva smiled softly and turned to kiss him.

— You always know what to say.

Jason intertwined his fingers with hers.

"So, shall we go home?"

She sighed, casting one last glance at the city before nodding.

"Let's go."

The airport was busy, as always. Jason and Ziva quickly passed through check-in and security, sitting in the boarding area while they waited for their flight.

Ziva was flipping through a travel magazine while Jason fiddled with his phone.

"What are you looking at?" she asked, without taking her eyes off the magazine.

Jason smiled and turned the screen towards her.

"Photos of us that we took here. Some are really good."

She looked closely and smiled.

"Let's print some to put in our apartment."

Jason agreed.

"Good idea."

The boarding announcement sounded over the loudspeakers, and they stood up, grabbing their carry-on luggage.

As they walked to the entrance of the plane, Ziva held Jason's arm.

"We have an amazing life, don't we?" He looked at her and smiled.

"We do. And the best is yet to come."

They boarded the plane together, ready to return to Los Angeles and begin the next chapter of their lives.
