Chapter 1 - The Story of Greed for Money

A Poor but Happy Family

In a small village in West Bengal lived a man named Ratan. He was very poor, but he had a very kind heart.

Ratan had a small family—his wife Mira and their son Rahul.

Ratan worked as a daily laborer. He worked hard all day and whatever money he earned was used to run the household.

They did not have much money, but their home was full of happiness. At night they would sit together, eat, talk, and laugh.

Sometimes Mira would say,

— "We may have little money, but we have a lot of love."

Ratan would smile and reply,

— "Yes, it doesn't take a lot of money to be happy."

But one day something happened that completely changed Ratan's life.

Suddenly Finding Money

One day Ratan was working near a forest. Suddenly he noticed an old iron box buried in the ground.

Curiously, he opened the box.

As soon as he opened it, his eyes widened in surprise.

Inside were many gold coins and money.

Ratan thought to himself,

"Wow! With this much money I will become very rich!"

He took the box home.

Mira asked in surprise,

— "Where did you get so much money?"

Ratan said,

— "Our luck has changed! Now we don't have to suffer anymore."

From that day, greed for money began to grow in Ratan's heart.

Slowly Changing

Earlier Ratan was a very good man. But after getting the money, he slowly started to change.

He no longer wanted to work. He just sat and counted his money all day.

When Rahul asked him to play, he would say,

— "Go away, don't bother me."

Mira warned him,

— "Don't waste all this money."

But Ratan didn't listen.

There was only one thought in his mind—

how to earn even more money.

The Beginning of Greed

One day Ratan thought,

"I already have money, but I need even more."

He started lending money to the villagers.

But he charged them very high interest.

The villagers began to suffer.

One day an old man said,

— "Ratan, you used to be a good person. Now you only think about money."

Ratan angrily replied,

— "Without money, no one is anything!"

The villagers felt very sad.

Family Suffering

Ratan's greed kept growing.

He no longer gave time to his family.

One day Rahul cried and said,

— "Father, you used to play with me before."

Ratan replied irritably,

— "Don't disturb me."

Mira felt very hurt.

She said,

— "This money is taking away our happiness."

But Ratan did not listen to anyone.

A Big Trouble

One night Ratan kept all his money in a box and went to sleep.

Late at night, some thieves entered his house.

They stole all the money and gold coins and ran away.

In the morning when Ratan woke up, he saw that all the money was gone.

He began to cry loudly.

A Big Lesson

Ratan was completely broken.

He realized that because of money, he had lost the love of his family and the respect of people.

He went to Mira and said,

— "Please forgive me. I made a mistake."

Mira replied,

— "Money can come again, but if people change their hearts, everything is lost."

Tears filled Ratan's eyes.

A New Beginning

Ratan started working again like before.

He began helping the villagers.

He played with Rahul and spent time with his family.

One day he said,

— "I have understood that happiness is not in money, but in love."

The villagers started loving him again.
