Chapter 69 - Fault Lines

The simulation covered nearly the entire evaluation complex.

Artificial cities.

Supply networks.

Communication relays.

Evacuation routes.

Threat zones.

Every decision affected something else.

Exactly the kind of scenario where mistakes multiplied.

Kai's team moved quickly.

Not recklessly.

Efficiently.

Eva handled logistics planning.

Darius managed immediate response priorities.

Lena coordinated resource allocation.

Rylan monitored information flow.

And Kai continued searching for hidden variables.

The team settled into a rhythm surprisingly fast.

Not because they knew each other.

Because they adapted.

The First Report

Ten minutes into the simulation, the first update arrived.

Several teams had already failed objectives.

Some focused entirely on combat.

Others spread themselves too thin.

One team lost its communication network.

Another exhausted critical resources.

Exactly what the scenario was designed to expose.

Darius looked at the report and shook his head.

"Too aggressive."

Eva raised an eyebrow.

"You?"

Darius pointed at the screen.

"They committed everything."

A pause.

"Even I know that's stupid."

Lena laughed.

Rylan looked genuinely surprised.

"I didn't expect that sentence from an Iron Vanguard student."

Darius looked offended.

"People keep acting like we solve everything by running into walls."

Nobody spoke.

Darius stared at them.

"…Okay, sometimes."

Even Kai almost smiled.

The Real Problem

As they approached the logistics corridor, Kai felt something bothering him.

Not the scenario.

The scenario made sense.

Something else.

He slowed slightly.

The synchronization link stirred.

Adaptive Synchronization Core

Link Stability: 29%

Still increasing.

Still unexplained.

Kai looked across the map again.

Then he saw it.

Not an objective.

A timing issue.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The logistics corridor wasn't the true objective.

It was bait.

The second layer.

Eva noticed him studying the display.

"What is it?"

Kai zoomed in.

Several routes illuminated.

Supply movement.

Communication signals.

Emergency deployment paths.

Then he highlighted a relay station.

Small.

Remote.

Apparently insignificant.

The room became quiet.

Rylan leaned forward.

His expression changed immediately.

"There."

Eva's eyes widened.

Darius frowned.

Lena looked between them.

"Explain."

Kai pointed at the relay.

"If this fails…"

He traced several pathways.

"…the logistics corridor becomes irrelevant."

Silence.

Then understanding spread.

Fast.

Because once they saw it—

they couldn't unsee it.

The relay station controlled information flow.

Without information, resources couldn't be redirected.

Without redirection, every response collapsed.

The corridor only mattered if the relay survived.

The simulation designers had hidden the real objective beneath the hidden objective.

A third layer.

Darius laughed.

"That's evil."

Eva nodded immediately.

"Agreed."

External Attention

High above the evaluation grounds, observers watched the unfolding event.

Large displays tracked team decisions in real time.

Performance rankings shifted continuously.

Most teams were focused on visible threats.

A smaller number discovered the logistics corridor.

Only three teams had identified the relay station.

Kai's team was one of them.

Several observers exchanged looks.

Not because the discovery was impossible.

Because it was early.

Very early.

One representative from Northern Citadel adjusted his glasses.

"Interesting."

Another observer nodded.

"Pattern recognition."

A third observer looked toward Director Rowan.

"You weren't exaggerating."

Rowan didn't respond.

His attention remained fixed on the display.

Specifically—

on Kai.

The Disturbance

Back inside the simulation, the team moved toward the relay station.

Everything was proceeding smoothly.

Then the world flickered.

For less than a second.

A strange sensation passed through Kai's perception.

Not physical.

Systemic.

The synchronization core surged.

Adaptive Synchronization Core

Link Stability: 32%

Warning.

The notification appeared and disappeared so quickly he almost missed it.

A second message followed.

EXTERNAL RESONANCE DETECTED

Kai stopped.

Immediately.

Lena noticed first.

"What happened?"

Eva and Darius turned as well.

Only Rylan didn't ask.

Because he was already watching.

Carefully.

Too carefully.

Kai scanned the area.

The simulation environment remained unchanged.

No threats.

No anomalies.

Nothing visible.

Yet the system had reacted.

Again.

External resonance.

The same phrase.

The same warning.

Something outside the academy.

Outside the evaluation.

Outside the simulation.

Responding.

Rylan's Observation

The team resumed moving.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Rylan broke the silence.

"I've been trying to figure something out."

Nobody interrupted.

He continued walking.

"At first I thought you were simply good at adaptation."

A pause.

"Then I thought maybe you process information differently."

Another pause.

"Now I'm not sure."

Kai glanced toward him.

Rylan shrugged slightly.

"People usually react to situations."

His eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

"You react to changes before they fully happen."

The statement hung in the air.

Eva looked interested.

Lena looked thoughtful.

Darius looked confused.

Which was becoming normal.

Kai didn't answer.

Because he wasn't entirely certain himself.

Hybrid Vision.

The System.

The synchronization core.

Their interactions were becoming harder to separate.

Rankings

An hour into the simulation, updated rankings appeared.

Joint Tactical Assessment

Current Team Rankings

Teams shifted constantly.

Positions rose and fell.

Mistakes accumulated.

Successes multiplied.

Kai's team entered the top five.

Then the top three.

Eventually—

second place.

Impressive.

But not first.

Not yet.

Darius immediately noticed.

"Who's ahead of us?"

The display updated.

A single team identifier appeared.

Eclipse Academy.

Rylan blinked.

Then laughed.

"Of course."

Lena looked at him.

"You sound proud."

"A little."

At least he was honest.

The Hidden Trigger

As the simulation approached its final stage, another notification appeared.

Not on the public displays.

Not on academy systems.

Only for Kai.

CONDITIONAL EVENT UPDATED

Observation Level: Elevated

Threshold Status: Approaching

Current Estimate: 89%

Kai's expression remained calm.

Internally—

his attention sharpened.

Eighty-nine percent.

The number had jumped dramatically.

Far too dramatically.

Something had changed.

Something significant.

And judging by the system's behavior—

the Inter-Academy Evaluation wasn't merely measuring performance anymore.

It was accelerating whatever process had already begun.

Far above the simulation grounds, Director Rowan finally spoke.

Quietly.

"So it begins."

The observer beside him frowned.

"You're certain?"

Rowan watched the display.

Watched Kai.

Then nodded.

"The fault lines are appearing."

The observer looked toward the evaluation grounds.

"What happens when the threshold reaches one hundred percent?"

For the first time all day—

Director Rowan didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calm.

Perhaps too calm.

"We find out whether the records were right."

And somehow—

that answer was far more concerning than a direct explanation.
