Chapter 68 - Opening Moves

The first day of the Inter-Academy Evaluation began before sunrise.

For the first time in months, the academy felt completely awake before dawn.

Students moved between buildings.

Faculty coordinated logistics.

Visitors filled observation platforms.

Nobody wanted to miss the opening events.

Kai arrived at the designated preparation hall fifteen minutes early.

He wasn't the first.

Victor sat at a nearby table reviewing event data.

Several screens floated around him.

Naturally.

Marcus was eating.

Again.

Also naturally.

Lena stood near one of the windows overlooking the arena complex.

The morning light reflected across the glass.

For a moment, she simply watched the activity outside.

Then she noticed Kai approaching.

"Couldn't sleep?"

Kai stopped beside her.

"I slept."

Lena nodded.

"That's somehow exactly what I expected you to say."

A faint smile appeared before she looked back outside.

The academy grounds were crowded.

Far more than usual.

Visitors.

Observers.

Representatives.

Everyone waiting.

Everyone watching.

Event One

The opening event was announced shortly after sunrise.

Joint Tactical Assessment.

Not combat.

Not individually.

Joint.

Several students seemed disappointed.

Most faculty looked pleased.

The event briefing appeared across the massive displays.

Teams from different academies would be grouped together.

Their objective:

Respond to a developing crisis simulation.

Unknown variables.

Limited information.

Time constraints.

The crowd immediately became interested again.

Because unpredictability was harder than combat.

Much harder.

Team Assignments

Participants gathered inside the central arena.

Dozens of elite students from multiple academies filled the structure.

For the first time, everyone could directly compare one another.

Different uniforms.

Different fighting styles.

Different reputations.

Kai observed quietly.

Iron Vanguard students looked confident.

Northern Citadel participants appeared analytical.

Eclipse students watched everything.

Nothing unexpected.

Then the assignments appeared.

Names rapidly filled the central display.

Kai searched for his.

Kai Veyron.

Lena Hart.

Rylan Eclipse.

A student from Northern Citadel.

And an Iron Vanguard representative.

Interesting.

Very intentional.

The academy organizers clearly wanted mixed teams.

No academy advantages.

No familiar structures.

Adaptation.

Again.

Everything kept returning to adaptation.

First Meeting

The assigned team gathered near a preparation chamber.

The Northern Citadel student introduced herself first.

"Eva Sterling."

Professional.

Efficient.

The Iron Vanguard representative followed.

"Darius."

Short.

Simple.

Marcus would probably approve.

Then Rylan arrived.

His gaze immediately moved toward Kai.

Amusement appeared briefly.

"Looks like we get another conversation."

Kai nodded.

"Looks like it."

Lena looked between them.

"You've met."

"Briefly."

Rylan answered.

"He's difficult to profile."

Eva immediately looked interested.

Darius looked confused.

Different academies.

Different priorities.

The Simulation

The briefing began.

A large map appeared.

Several regions flashed red.

Resource shortages.

Communication failures.

Civilian evacuations.

Threat activity.

The scenario was enormous.

Far larger than any academy exercise.

Interesting.

The organizers weren't easing participants into the evaluation.

They were testing them immediately.

An official stepped forward.

"You will have fifteen minutes to develop a response plan."

The timer appeared.

Fifteen minutes.

Not much.

Immediate Conflict

The discussion began instantly.

Darius pointed toward the largest threat zone.

"We eliminate the primary threat."

Simple.

Direct.

Iron Vanguard.

Eva disagreed immediately.

"If communication remains disrupted, secondary failures spread."

Northern Citadel.

Rylan studied the map silently.

Watching.

Analyzing.

Not speaking.

Interesting.

Kai recognized the behavior.

Rylan preferred information before conclusions.

Lena examined resource distribution.

Several minutes passed.

Different viewpoints emerged.

Different priorities.

Exactly what the organizers wanted.

Then Kai noticed something.

A pattern.

Again.

The scenario wasn't balanced.

The largest threat wasn't the real problem.

It was visible.

Too visible.

The true failure point sat elsewhere.

A logistics junction.

Small.

Unremarkable.

Critical.

Kai pointed toward it.

Conversation stopped.

Eva immediately focused on the location.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"The supply corridor."

Kai nodded.

Rylan looked at the data.

Then smiled.

"There it is again."

Lena glanced toward him.

"What?"

Rylan folded his arms.

"He keeps finding the hidden variable."

Interesting observation.

Because it wasn't entirely wrong.

Pressure

The discussion accelerated.

Now everyone understood the problem.

If the logistics corridor failed—

everything else failed.

Resources.

Communication.

Evacuation routes.

All of it.

The scenario suddenly looked completely different.

Darius stared at the map.

Then laughed.

"We almost walked directly into that."

Eva nodded.

"Most teams probably will."

Which was likely true.

The simulation designers had hidden the critical objective beneath more obvious threats.

Classic misdirection.

The Pulse

With five minutes remaining—

the synchronization core reacted.

Hard.

Kai froze briefly.

Adaptive Synchronization Core

Link Stability: 28%

The increase was larger than normal.

Much larger.

A second notification appeared.

THRESHOLD PROXIMITY INCREASING

Then vanished.

No explanation.

No details.

Only a warning.

Kai kept his expression neutral.

Nobody seemed to notice.

Except—

Rylan.

The Eclipse student was watching him again.

Not suspiciously.

Carefully.

As if he sensed something.

Or recognized something.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The Beginning

The timer reached zero.

The simulation officially started.

Across the enormous evaluation complex, dozens of elite teams began moving simultaneously.

Strategies unfolded.

Plans adapted.

Mistakes formed.

Opportunities emerged.

Observers watched from elevated platforms.

Directors.

Instructors.

Officials.

Representatives.

Far above them all, Director Rowan stood beside several guests.

One of the guests looked toward Kai's team.

"That's him?"

Rowan nodded.

The guest studied the display.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

"The resonance is progressing faster than the records predicted."

Rowan's expression remained calm.

"Yes."

The guest looked concerned.

Rowan looked thoughtful.

Neither reaction was particularly reassuring.

Because below them—

the evaluation had only just begun.

And the threshold was closer than ever.
