Chapter 4 - The Choice of the Crystal

Kai stood over the fallen Ironhide Boar, its massive body still twitching faintly as the life drained from it. The sunlight glinted off its thick black hide, and the two enormous tusks jutted sharply from its snarling face. At his feet, a beast crystal rested, larger and denser than any Kai had ever seen. Its glow pulsed faintly, casting tiny flickers of light across the dirt.

He bent down slowly, hesitating. His fingers hovered just above the crystal.

The screen appeared automatically.

Beast Crystal Detected

Absorb Crystal?

YES / NO

Kai's mind froze. He knew the rules—whoever landed the killing blow took the crystal. Everyone around him understood the same. There was no need for anyone to explain it. The Great 17 had trained long enough to know that the reward belonged to the victor.

Marcus, the one who had struck the beast's throat with his spear, wiped blood from his hands and straightened up. "Mine," he said casually, nodding toward the crystal. His voice carried no arrogance, only quiet ownership. The others accepted it without argument, though they all glanced at Kai briefly as if measuring his reaction.

Kai's heart thumped. The crystal's glow was hypnotic. He could feel… something else pulsing inside him, a warm energy radiating, almost whispering. Only he could sense it. Only he knew what would happen if he absorbed it.

He swallowed.

Marcus bent slightly to retrieve the crystal, but Kai's hand twitched. He didn't move. He couldn't. Not here. Not in front of everyone. Not now.

The system's voice, calm and robotic, echoed in his mind:

"Absorbing crystal will transfer energy and points. Will you proceed?"

Kai hesitated. The principle of fairness weighed heavily on him. He wasn't a selfish person. He could take the crystal and no one would know—but that wasn't right. Marcus had fought. Marcus had delivered the killing strike. He deserved the reward.

Yet… the pull inside him was undeniable. The energy whispered to him, soft and persistent, promising growth. Faster reflexes. Sharper senses. Strength. He had learned enough already to know that every crystal mattered. Every single point could make a difference later, though he couldn't explain why his instincts screamed so urgently this time.

Marcus raised the crystal in his hand. "You okay, Kai?" he asked casually, noticing Kai's hesitation. There was no judgment in his tone, just curiosity.

Kai blinked, forcing himself to nod. "Yeah… yeah, I'm fine."

Marcus smiled faintly, then held the crystal tightly. He didn't rush, didn't show off. To him, this was just part of the hunt. The others had returned to brushing dirt from their armor and checking their weapons, some muttering about strategy for the next target. Lena, always cautious, looked back at Kai, her brow furrowed ever so slightly, though she didn't ask any questions. Everyone here had their own way of handling the reward, and none of them were careless.

Kai's thoughts swirled. The crystal was right there, humming with untapped potential, but he would not interfere. His system hummed silently, waiting, patient as always. The lesson had been clear in his mind: principle before power.

Still… he watched Marcus hold it. And the pull grew stronger.

Aiden, who often played the role of comic relief, tripped over a small root nearby, flailing dramatically before regaining his balance. "Whoa! Almost got eaten by a tree! Watch your step!" he shouted, earning a small smirk from Kairo.

Kai allowed himself a brief smile. Even in tense moments, the balance between seriousness and silliness kept the group grounded.

Finally, Marcus slipped the crystal into his storage ring. Its glow disappeared with a faint pop of light, leaving only a trace of warmth in his hand. The forest seemed quieter now, the energy settling.

Kai exhaled slowly. That would have been his. But it wasn't. And that was right. Only he knew the faint surge inside himself—the energy of the beast, processed through the system in a tiny reward. The system gave him a small acknowledgment, just enough to remind him that he had been present, but no one else noticed. No one could.

+2 Points

Minor Reflex Boost

Kai felt it flow through him in silence, a subtle sharpening of his senses. He moved slightly, testing his footing and noticing a faint increase in awareness. His muscles were lighter, his reactions just a touch faster.

No one saw. No one would. And that was exactly how it had to be. The Hybrid System worked quietly, granting him small advantages without drawing attention.

Hours passed as the group continued hunting. They didn't travel as a unit in tight formation anymore. Instead, they spread out, each member moving independently, testing their instincts, and tracking different paths through the forest. Marcus, Victor, Lena, and the others each had their own ways of using the crystals they gathered. Some enhanced strength, others weapon skills, or stamina. Each strategy was unique, honed over years of training.

Kai moved carefully, blending with the underbrush, observing a small herd of forest deer. He didn't rush. He didn't draw attention. He had learned that subtlety was often the best approach. And the system remained silent, waiting, watching, ready to respond only when he chose.

By the time the sun began to dip behind the treeline, the group reconvened at a clearing. The discussion was brief. Marcus laughed as he recounted how the Ironhide Boar had nearly charged through his chest. Victor chimed in about dodging the tusks, and Kairo teased Aiden for tripping over roots multiple times. Each member spoke in turn, sharing their insights, but no one dominated. Respect was mutual—even if teasing and jokes punctuated the conversation.

Finally, Number One nodded. "Next time, we split up. Everyone alone. That's the only way to improve."

Agreement spread among the Great 17. Hunting together offered safety, but to grow stronger, they would have to face the forest and its beasts individually. Kai didn't argue. He wouldn't. And he wouldn't let anyone else see what little reward the system had quietly given him today.

As the group moved back toward the academy, Kai kept his thoughts to himself. His eyes lingered on the fading light, already scanning for unseen dangers. The warmth of the system's reward pulsed faintly within him, a silent reminder of the path
