Chapter 7 - Quiet Growth

Morning sunlight spread across the training grounds of the academy, turning the dew on the grass into a field of glittering silver.

Students moved across the yard in small groups, practicing weapon drills while instructors walked among them correcting posture and technique.

Steel clashed.

Boots scraped the dirt.

Short bursts of shouting echoed across the courtyard.

Kai stood among them, his sword resting loosely in his hand.

"Again," Instructor Halvern ordered.

The line of students moved forward.

Kai stepped into position with the others.

Across from him stood another student holding a practice blade. The young man looked nervous but determined.

"Begin!"

The student attacked first.

His swing came straight toward Kai's shoulder.

Kai didn't activate Hybrid Vision Eyes.

He didn't need to.

He simply stepped aside and guided the blade away with a small movement of his wrist.

The student blinked in surprise.

Kai tapped the boy's shoulder lightly with the flat of his blade.

"Point."

Halvern nodded slightly.

"Good control."

Kai stepped back into line.

He wasn't the best swordsman in the academy.

Not even close.

But he had something most students didn't yet understand.

Patience.

The class continued for another hour.

Students practiced strikes, blocks, and footwork. Occasionally someone landed hard in the dirt while the others laughed.

Marcus, two rows over, knocked his opponent flat with a single heavy swing.

"Oops," Marcus said.

His opponent groaned.

"You say that every time."

Aiden leaned against a training post nearby.

"You guys fight way too seriously."

Victor glanced at him.

"You haven't even started your drills."

Aiden lifted his sword lazily.

"I'm studying."

"Studying what?"

"How not to get hit."

Victor sighed.

Kai kept practicing.

Every swing.

Every step.

Every movement.

He paid attention to the feeling of the blade moving through the air.

Sword training wasn't just about strength.

It was rhythm.

Balance.

Timing.

By the time class ended, his arms were slightly sore but his movements felt smoother.

Halvern dismissed them.

"Tomorrow we practice against moving targets."

Marcus grinned.

"Finally something fun."

Later that afternoon Kai sat in the classroom for Beast Behavior Studies.

Instructor Merith walked slowly between the desks.

"Understanding how beasts think is the difference between surviving and becoming food," she said.

Several students chuckled.

Merith stopped beside the board and wrote a single sentence.

Predators rarely attack without advantage.

Kai watched carefully.

This class mattered more than most students realized.

Merith continued.

"Many young hunters assume beasts are mindless creatures."

She shook her head.

"That assumption gets people killed."

She drew three circles on the board.

"Beasts observe. They test. They wait."

Kai leaned forward slightly.

That matched what he had seen in the forest.

The three lizard beasts from yesterday had been watching each other before he arrived.

Merith pointed to the board again.

"A smart hunter learns to think like a predator."

Kai felt the system flicker.

Then the familiar screen appeared quietly in front of him.

New Quest Detected

Predator Observation

Objective:

Observe three separate beast interactions in the wild.

Reward:

+15 XP

+5 Reward Points

Kai blinked once.

A quest… from a classroom lesson.

Interesting.

He accepted it silently.

The screen disappeared.

Merith continued speaking while students wrote notes.

Kai wrote as well.

But part of his mind was already planning tonight's hunt.

The academy day ended shortly afterward.

Students spread out across the grounds or returned to the dormitories.

Kai headed for the forest again.

The sky was beginning to turn orange as the sun lowered.

Cool air drifted between the trees.

Perfect hunting conditions.

Kai moved deeper into the woods than usual.

His footsteps were quiet.

Branches barely moved as he passed.

After a few minutes he activated Hybrid Vision Eyes.

The world shifted.

Faint glowing lines appeared again.

Footprints.

Energy trails.

Movement patterns.

Kai crouched behind a tree.

Two beasts stood near a small stream ahead.

They resembled wolves, but larger.

Their fur shimmered faintly with silver light.

Kai watched.

One wolf lowered its head to drink.

The other kept watch.

Guard behavior.

Smart.

Kai stayed hidden.

A few minutes passed.

Then something unexpected happened.

A third beast approached.

This one was different.

A long-bodied predator with sleek black fur and glowing green eyes.

The wolves immediately reacted.

Low growls filled the air.

The black predator stepped forward slowly.

Testing them.

Just like Instructor Merith described.

Predators looking for advantage.

Kai watched carefully.

The system updated.

Quest Progress

Predator Observation

Interaction 1 of 3 observed

The black predator attacked first.

It moved incredibly fast.

One wolf leapt to intercept it while the other circled behind.

The fight exploded into motion.

Claws.

Fangs.

Snarls.

Kai stayed hidden.

He wasn't part of this battle.

Not yet.

The black predator slashed across the first wolf's neck.

Blood sprayed across the grass.

But the second wolf tackled it from the side.

All three creatures rolled across the ground in a violent tangle.

Kai studied every movement.

Hybrid Vision Eyes highlighted muscle shifts and attack patterns.

After nearly a minute of fighting, the black predator managed to break free.

It grabbed the injured wolf by the throat.

CRUNCH.

The wolf collapsed.

The other wolf hesitated.

That hesitation cost it.

The predator lunged again and tore into its side.

Moments later—

Silence.

Two dead wolves.

One exhausted predator.

Kai stood slowly.

This was the moment predators waited for.

Advantage.

The black beast lifted its head suddenly.

It sensed him.

Kai stepped forward calmly.

The predator snarled and charged.

Kai moved.

Hybrid Vision Eyes predicted the angle of the attack.

He sidestepped.

His sword flashed.

The blade cut along the creature's ribs.

The predator spun and lunged again.

Kai ducked beneath the claws and drove his blade upward into its chest.

The beast staggered.

But it wasn't finished.

It slammed its body into Kai.

He rolled across the ground, losing his grip on the sword for a moment.

The predator pounced.

Kai grabbed his blade again just in time.

The creature's jaws snapped inches from his face.

Kai pushed upward with all his strength.

Then twisted.

The blade drove deep into the beast's throat.

The body went still.

Kai lay there for a moment breathing heavily.

Then slowly pushed the beast aside.

Three dead wolves.

One predator.

Four bodies.

Kai sat up.

"That worked out," he muttered.

The system appeared again.

Kai stood and began collecting the crystals.

One from each wolf.

One from the predator.

He held the first crystal in his palm.

Beast Crystal Detected

Absorb Crystal?

YES / NO

"Yes," he whispered quietly.

The crystal dissolved into light.

Warm energy flowed through his arms.

He repeated the process for the remaining three crystals.

Each absorption strengthened the faint energy building inside him.

By the time the last crystal disappeared, his breathing had steadied.

Kai looked deeper into the forest.

Tonight had been productive.

But more importantly—

He was learning.

Learning how predators moved.

How beasts fought.

How to choose the right moment to strike.

And the system kept rewarding that patience.

Kai cleaned his sword on the grass and sheathed it.

Then he began walking back toward the academy.
