The Adventurers' Guild training yard sat behind the main hall, separated from the street by a tall wooden fence reinforced with iron brackets. Lanterns hung from posts around the perimeter, casting steady pools of light across the packed dirt ground.
Even late in the evening, the yard was not empty.
Several adventurers sparred with wooden blades while a pair of mages practiced controlled spellcasting near a stone target wall. The quiet thumps of practice strikes and the occasional flash of magic filled the cool night air.
When Kael, Lyria, and Lyra stepped through the gate, a few people looked up in curiosity.
Word about the dungeon clear had already spread through the guild.
Lyria didn't seem to notice or care. She walked straight toward the open center of the yard with the easy confidence of someone completely comfortable in a fight.
Kael followed more slowly.
"You know," he said, rubbing the back of his neck, "most people celebrate dungeon clears by eating and sleeping."
Lyria turned around while walking backward.
"Most people don't have a fortress-class dungeon briefing sitting in their pocket."
Kael sighed.
"Fair point."
Lyra closed the gate behind them and stepped forward to join them in the center of the yard.
Her eyes calmly scanned the surroundings, as if she were already evaluating the environment for magical interference.
"Practicing here should be sufficient," she said.
Kael looked around.
"You're not worried about people watching?"
Lyria shrugged.
"If we start blowing up buildings, maybe."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"Comforting."
They reached the middle of the training yard, where the ground had been worn flat by years of sparring.
Lyria stretched her arms above her head.
"So the plan is simple."
Kael crossed his arms.
"Is it?"
She pointed at him.
"You stand there."
Then she pointed at herself and Lyra.
"We push the resonance."
Kael blinked.
"That sounds dangerously vague."
Lyra stepped slightly closer to him.
"What Lyria means is that we should deliberately test the limits of our bond."
Kael frowned.
"And how exactly do we do that?"
Lyra answered calmly.
"Controlled spell output while maintaining shared mana flow."
Lyria grinned.
"In other words, we throw magic around until something breaks."
Kael sighed.
"You two are terrifying."
Lyria clapped her hands once.
"Alright, let's start small."
She took a few steps back and raised her hands.
Lightning crackled faintly across her fingers.
Lyra mirrored her movement on the opposite side of Kael. Frost gathered around her palms, tiny ice crystals forming in the air.
Kael stood between them, feeling the familiar hum of the bond awaken.
The connection wasn't just emotional or mental anymore.
It was physical.
He could feel their mana like two currents flowing toward him.
Lyra spoke quietly.
"Focus on stabilizing the flow."
Kael closed his eyes for a moment.
The training yard noises faded into the background as he concentrated.
The bond shimmered to life.
He could feel Lyria's energy first.
Sharp.
Electric.
Restless.
Then Lyra's.
Cool.
Precise.
Controlled.
When those two streams met inside the resonance channel, the difference between them was obvious.
Lyria's mana surged like a thunderstorm.
Lyra's moved like slow freezing water.
Kael exhaled slowly.
"Okay… I think I feel it."
"Good," Lyria said.
"Because we're starting."
Without warning, she fired a bolt of lightning at a wooden training dummy across the yard.
The flash lit the entire practice field.
The bolt struck the target with a loud crack, splintering the wood and sending sparks flying.
Several nearby adventurers stopped sparring and turned to stare.
Kael felt the surge of mana ripple through the bond.
Normally that much power would have drained Lyria significantly.
But the energy flowed through Kael instead, stabilizing before returning to her.
Lyria blinked.
"Oh."
Kael opened his eyes.
"What?"
She looked down at her hands.
"That barely cost anything."
Lyra's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Interesting."
She raised one hand and formed a sharp spear of ice.
Then she launched it across the yard.
The projectile slammed into the stone target wall with enough force to crack the surface.
Again the mana surged through the bond.
Again Kael felt it stabilize and circulate back outward.
Lyra looked at him.
"The efficiency is higher than before."
Kael frowned slightly.
"I feel that too."
The mana wasn't just flowing.
It was cycling.
Like a loop.
Lyria's grin widened.
"Oh this is going to be fun."
She fired three rapid lightning bolts in succession.
Each one cracked through the air with explosive force.
Kael braced himself for the strain.
But it never came.
Instead the energy moved through him smoothly.
Balanced.
Contained.
Lyra spoke quietly.
"The resonance network has strengthened."
Kael looked between them.
"So we're stronger?"
"Yes," Lyra said.
"But more importantly… we are more stable."
Lyria laughed.
"Translation: we can throw bigger spells without exploding."
Kael scratched his head.
"That's reassuring."
Lyra raised her hand again.
"Let us test the next step."
"What next step?" Kael asked.
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead she began gathering mana.
A large amount.
The air around her started to grow noticeably colder.
Frost spread slowly across the dirt ground beneath her feet.
Kael felt the change instantly through the bond.
"That's a lot of mana."
"Yes."
Lyria looked impressed.
"Oh, you're going big."
Lyra nodded once.
"I will attempt a wide-area spell."
Kael blinked.
"Here?"
"The training yard is designed to withstand moderate magical output."
"Moderate."
Lyra extended her hand outward.
The air shimmered as ice formed rapidly around her.
"Glacial Field."
A wave of frost exploded outward across the ground, spreading in a circular pattern around them.
The dirt froze solid.
Ice crystals erupted from the surface like jagged flowers.
Several adventurers near the edge of the yard jumped backward in surprise.
Kael felt the massive mana drain hit the bond.
For a split second he thought it might overwhelm him.
Then the resonance activated fully.
The energy split evenly between them.
Flowing.
Recycling.
Rebalancing.
When the spell finished, Lyra exhaled slowly.
Her breathing remained steady.
Kael stared at her.
"That should have exhausted you."
"Yes."
"But it did not."
Lyria stepped forward, looking around at the frozen training yard with clear excitement.
"Okay. That was awesome."
Kael rubbed his temples.
"And slightly terrifying."
A slow clapping sound interrupted them.
All three turned toward the fence.
The silver-haired guild official stood there watching them.
Kael groaned.
"Please tell me you didn't watch that entire thing."
The man smiled calmly.
"I did."
Lyria grinned.
"Impressive, right?"
"Very."
He stepped into the yard, carefully walking across the frozen ground.
"I believe my earlier judgment was correct."
Kael crossed his arms.
"And what judgment was that?"
"That the three of you might actually survive the North Ridge dungeon."
Lyra tilted her head slightly.
"You observed the resonance behavior."
"Yes."
He looked directly at Kael.
"Your ability to stabilize their mana output is extraordinary."
Kael shifted uncomfortably.
"I'm still figuring it out."
"Even so."
The man gestured at the frozen yard.
"Most adventuring teams could not perform magic of that scale without severe exhaustion."
Lyria stretched lazily.
"Guess we're special."
The official nodded.
"Indeed."
He looked at Kael one more time.
"So tell me."
"Have you made your decision?"
Kael looked at Lyria.
Then at Lyra.
Both twins watched him calmly.
Waiting.
He thought about the dungeon briefing.
The danger.
The challenge.
And the strange bond that kept growing stronger between them.
Finally he exhaled slowly.
"I guess we're going to the mountains."
Lyria's grin returned instantly.
Lyra nodded once.
And the guild official smiled.
Because the expedition had just begun.
