Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 — Shadows in the Forest

The forest was quiet in a way that felt almost deliberate.

As night deepened around the campsite, the small circle of firelight became the only warm glow among the towering trees. Beyond that glow, the woods dissolved into dark shapes and long shadows.

Kael lay on his bedroll staring up through a small opening in the canopy.

He hadn't expected to fall asleep so quickly after taking third watch, but exhaustion from the long day of travel eventually caught up with him.

Now, sometime before dawn, he woke again.

The fire had burned low.

Only glowing embers remained, casting faint orange light across the clearing.

Kael pushed himself upright slowly, careful not to make unnecessary noise.

Lyria sat on the opposite side of the fire, resting against a tree with her arms folded.

She noticed him immediately.

"Morning," she said quietly.

Kael rubbed his eyes.

"Is it morning already?"

"Almost."

Lyra sat nearby with a small book resting in her lap. The faint glow of a magical lantern illuminated the pages.

"You slept well," she said without looking up.

Kael stretched his arms.

"Better than I expected."

Lyria tossed a small twig into the embers, reigniting a faint flame.

"Forest nights are good for sleep."

"Unless something tries to eat you," Kael said.

She grinned.

"True."

Kael looked around the dark forest.

"Did anything happen during watch?"

Lyra closed the book.

"A few minor disturbances."

Kael froze.

"Define minor."

"Small woodland creatures," she clarified.

Lyria waved dismissively.

"Nothing dangerous."

Kael relaxed slightly.

"Good."

The sky above the trees slowly shifted from black to deep blue as dawn approached.

Lyra stood and stretched lightly.

"We should prepare to move."

Lyria pushed herself up as well.

"Second day of travel."

Kael rolled up his bedroll and packed his gear.

"Two more days to the mountains, right?"

"Approximately," Lyra said.

"Assuming no complications."

Lyria smirked.

"There are always complications."

Kael slung his pack over his shoulder.

"I'm starting to notice that."

Within twenty minutes the campsite had been cleared.

The fire pit was carefully covered with dirt, leaving little sign that anyone had stayed there.

Lyra checked the compass they had been given.

"Our direction remains stable."

Lyria stepped toward the forest path.

"Then let's move."

The trio began walking through the woods as the first sunlight filtered through the leaves above.

Morning birds called across the forest.

The air smelled fresh and cool.

Kael found himself relaxing slightly as they walked.

"This place is actually kind of peaceful."

"For now," Lyria said.

Lyra walked slightly ahead, her eyes scanning the terrain carefully.

"The forest remains relatively close to civilization."

Kael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Monsters tend to avoid areas with frequent human travel."

Lyria added casually, "But the farther north we go, the less that rule applies."

Kael nodded slowly.

"So today might get interesting."

"Possibly."

They followed a narrow trail that wound between the trees.

Occasionally the forest opened into small clearings where sunlight warmed the ground, but most of the path remained shaded.

After several hours of walking, Kael noticed the terrain gradually changing.

The ground became rockier.

The trees grew thinner.

And the faint outline of mountains began to appear more clearly through the distant branches.

He pointed ahead.

"I think I can see them now."

Lyria glanced forward.

"Yep."

Lyra confirmed quietly.

"The North Ridge."

Even from this distance the peaks looked imposing.

Sharp stone spires rose into the sky like jagged teeth.

Kael let out a slow breath.

"They look bigger up close."

"That's usually how mountains work," Lyria said.

He gave her a look.

"You know what I mean."

They continued walking until the sun reached its highest point.

Around midday they stopped again in a small clearing to rest.

Kael dropped his pack and stretched his back.

"My shoulders are officially complaining."

Lyria sat on a fallen log.

"You'll get used to it."

Lyra unpacked a small container of water and passed it to Kael.

"Hydration is important."

He drank gratefully.

"Thanks."

The break lasted about fifteen minutes before they continued moving.

As the afternoon wore on, the forest began to grow noticeably quieter.

Kael eventually noticed the change.

"Hey."

Lyria looked back.

"What?"

"The forest got really quiet."

Lyra slowed slightly.

"You are correct."

Kael frowned.

"That's not normal, right?"

"No," Lyra said.

Lyria scanned the trees around them.

"Animals usually make noise."

Kael's shoulders tensed.

"So if they stop—"

"It usually means something scared them," Lyria finished.

The trio stopped walking.

The forest stood still around them.

No birds.

No insects.

Just silence.

Kael lowered his voice.

"You think it's monsters?"

Lyra listened carefully.

"There is movement."

Lyria's hand moved toward the dagger at her belt.

"Where?"

Lyra pointed slightly to the left.

"Approximately twenty meters."

Kael felt the resonance bond stir faintly as tension built between them.

Then something moved between the trees.

A dark shape stepped slowly into view.

Kael blinked.

"…That's a wolf."

Lyria relaxed slightly.

"Big wolf."

The creature stood nearly as tall as Kael's waist.

Its fur was dark gray, and its eyes reflected a faint yellow glow.

Lyra observed it carefully.

"Not an ordinary wolf."

Kael sighed.

"Of course not."

Lyria tilted her head.

"Looks like a forest direwolf."

The creature growled softly.

Another shape appeared behind it.

Then another.

Kael counted quickly.

"Three."

Lyria grinned.

"Well."

She cracked her knuckles.

"First real fight of the trip."

Kael glanced at Lyra.

"Are they dangerous?"

"Yes."

"Great."

The direwolves slowly spread out, circling them.

Their eyes remained fixed on the trio.

Kael felt the resonance bond fully activate.

Mana flowed quietly between him and the twins.

Lyria rolled her shoulders.

"You ready?"

Kael exhaled slowly.

"I guess we're doing this."

Lyra raised her hand, frost beginning to gather in the air.

"Stay close."

The wolves lunged.

And the quiet forest exploded into motion.
