Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: A Stranger’s Calm

The garden had a quiet rhythm to it that morning. Kanopea moved slowly along the stone pathway, earbuds in, yet the sound of her friends' laughter fading behind her didn't reach her thoughts. Her eyes were fixed on the large oak tree where she had seen him before—the quiet stranger whose calm presence had pulled her attention since the first accidental glance. Today, he was there again, sitting on the wooden bench with his book open, completely absorbed, as if the world around him had ceased to exist. Kanopea paused a few steps away, pretending to adjust her bag, heart beating faster than she cared to admit. There was something in the way he held himself, in the steady calm of his shoulders and the slow, deliberate movement of his hands turning each page, that made her chest tighten in a way she didn't fully understand.

"You're staring again," Naomie's quiet voice broke her focus.

Kanopea jumped slightly, cheeks flushing, and shook her head.

"I'm not staring," she replied quickly, trying to sound casual. But the truth hovered too close to the surface for her to convincingly hide it.

Franca appeared then, waving as she jogged over with her usual iced coffee, followed closely by Sheree, Lila, and Than. The group stopped at a respectful distance, eyes following Kanopea's gaze.

Lila leaned over and whispered with a grin, "Ohhh… I see who's caught your attention."

Kanopea groaned silently, wishing the oak tree and its quiet occupant would suddenly vanish.

Sheree nudged her shoulder playfully. "He's just reading, Kan. Calm down."

Kanopea rolled her eyes but couldn't deny the flutter in her chest. Than, ever the calm observer, simply raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Sometimes the quiet ones are the most interesting," he said, almost as if reading her thoughts.

Naomie gave a small nod in agreement. "Notice them, but don't let it control you," she said softly, though even she seemed slightly intrigued by the figure beneath the tree.

Kanopea forced herself to look away, but her eyes betrayed her, darting back again and again. There was something about his serenity, something completely opposite from the chaos of her friends' laughter and the bustle of campus life, that drew her in. She realized that she had been without realizing for these moments when the garden, the bench, and the stranger would align, creating a scene so quiet it felt almost sacred.

Suddenly, he closed his book, the soft thud of the cover echoing in the quiet garden. He stood, straightening slightly, and slipped the book into his bag. Kanopea's breath caught in her throat. For a moment, she thought he might notice them. Perhaps he would glance up, see her standing a few feet away, and say something. But he didn't. He walked down the garden path with a deliberate calm, disappearing behind the trees, leaving Kanopea standing frozen in place, her heart pounding louder than she had expected.

Franca elbowed her lightly. "Come on, Kan. Bubble tea won't wait."

Kanopea exhaled slowly, forcing herself to move again, trying to let the moment pass. But as she walked beside her friends, laughter and chatter filling the air, she realized the truth she couldn't ignore: a quiet presence, a calm stranger, had unsettled her in the best possible way. Something inside her had shifted, a curiosity growing stronger, a feeling she wasn't ready to name but knew she would follow, quietly, wherever it led.
