Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: Eyes Under the Trees

The campus garden was one of the quietest places at the university. While the main walkways were filled with rushing students, laughter, and the constant sound of conversations, the garden seemed to exist in a calmer world. Tall oak trees stretched their branches across the sky, their leaves forming a soft green canopy that filtered the afternoon sunlight. Kanopea liked walking through this place after class. It gave her time to think and breathe away from the busy noise of campus life.

As she followed the stone path through the garden, her steps slowed when she noticed a familiar figure sitting on the wooden bench beneath the largest oak tree. The mysterious man was there again. He sat quietly with a book resting in his hands, completely absorbed in reading. The way he held the book suggested that he had been there for quite a while, comfortable in the stillness around him. Kanopea didn't even realize she had stopped walking until she felt someone standing beside her.

"You're staring again," Naomie said calmly.

Kanopea blinked and turned to her friend, slightly embarrassed. "I'm not staring," she replied quickly, though her voice lacked confidence. Naomie raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced, but before she could say anything else, Franca's cheerful voice echoed from behind them.

"Kan! Naomie! Wait for us!"

Franca hurried toward them with her usual iced coffee in hand, followed closely by Sheree, Lila, and Than. The group quickly gathered around Kanopea, immediately noticing that she was looking toward the oak tree. Lila was the first to understand what was happening.

"Ohhh," she said with a knowing smile.

Kanopea sighed. "Please don't start."

But it was already too late. Sheree leaned slightly to get a better look at the man sitting beneath the tree. He seemed completely unaware of the group observing him. He simply turned a page in his book, calm and focused.

"He looks mysterious," Sheree said.

"Or just peaceful," Than added thoughtfully.

Franca tilted her head slightly. "Maybe he just likes quiet places."

Kanopea didn't respond, but her eyes remained fixed on him. There was something about the way he sat there, relaxed and comfortable in silence. He didn't seem lonely. Instead, he seemed like someone who understood how to enjoy being alone.

Just then, the man closed his book. The soft sound caught Kanopea's attention immediately. He stood up slowly, slipped the book into his bag, and adjusted the strap over his shoulder. For a brief moment, Kanopea wondered if he might glance in their direction, but he didn't. Without looking back, he simply walked down the garden path and disappeared behind the trees.

Kanopea watched until he was completely gone.

"Wow," Sheree said after a moment.

"What?" Kanopea asked.

"You watched him leave like the main character in a romance movie."

Kanopea rolled her eyes, though she couldn't hide the faint smile forming on her face. She didn't know why she kept noticing him. She didn't know his name, his major, or even if he studied at the university. Yet somehow, the quiet stranger under the oak tree had become part of her daily thoughts.

And for the first time, Kanopea realized something strange.

She was hoping she would see him again.
