Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — Seeing Her Differently

The office was quieter in the late afternoon.

Most of the morning rush had settled, and the steady rhythm of work filled the space. Papers stacked neatly. Screens glowing softly. The low hum of productivity.

Elara sat at her desk, posture straight but relaxed.

Her cream blouse was smooth, sleeves buttoned neatly at her wrists. Her hair, tied in a clean bun, gave her a composed, almost elegant air.

She didn't look soft and shy here.

She looked capable.

Focused.

Confident.

She didn't notice when someone stepped into the reception area.

Asher had only come to drop off a document for a collaborative project between their departments. It was meant to be quick in and out.

But then he saw her.

She wasn't laughing. She wasn't teasing. She wasn't walking in a garden under warm sunlight.

She was explaining something to Daniel, pointing at a section of a printed report.

"No, if we adjust the figures here," she said calmly, tapping the page lightly, "it aligns better with the timeline. It'll make more sense to the client."

Daniel nodded slowly. "Oh. That actually works."

She gave a small smile. "Good."

Asher stayed still near the entrance, unnoticed for a moment.

He watched the way she carried herself steady, clear, assured. The bun, the minimal makeup, the simple outfit.

There was something quietly powerful about her like this.

Not trying.

Not performing.

Just being.

Maya noticed him first.

"Oh," she said, nudging Elara lightly. "You have a visitor."

Elara looked up.

And froze for half a second.

"Asher?"

He lifted the folder slightly. "Delivery."

Her coworkers exchanged quick glances.

Elara stood, smoothing her blouse instinctively before walking toward him.

"You didn't say you were coming," she said softly.

"It was last minute," he replied.

There was no dramatic pause. No intense stare.

Just a small moment where he took her in properly.

"You look…" he started, then stopped.

She blinked. "What?"

He shook his head lightly, a faint smile forming. "Different."

She frowned slightly. "Different how?"

"Like you own this place," he said simply.

Her eyebrows lifted in surprise.

"I don't own it."

"I know," he said. "But you look like you could."

The comment wasn't flirtatious.

It wasn't teasing.

It was sincere.

She felt her cheeks warm slightly, but she didn't look away this time.

"Work version of me," she said lightly.

"I like it," he replied.

Behind her, Maya pretended very obviously not to be listening.

Daniel failed at pretending entirely.

Elara cleared her throat. "Did you need anything else?"

"Just your signature," he said, opening the folder.

She leaned slightly closer to look at the document.

He noticed small things.

The way she focused fully when reading. The slight crease between her brows when concentrating. The calm way she signed her name without hesitation.

She handed the folder back.

"All done."

"Thank you," he said.

There was a brief silence not awkward, just aware.

Then Maya suddenly appeared beside them.

"So you're the Asher," she said cheerfully.

Elara blinked. "Maya"

He smiled politely. "I'm guessing she's talked about me?"

Elara's eyes widened. "I have not."

Maya grinned. "She has."

Elara turned to her, horrified. "Maya."

"Only good things," Maya added quickly.

Asher looked amused but gentle about it.

"Good to know," he said.

Daniel approached too, offering a handshake. "Nice to finally meet you."

Asher shook his hand calmly.

Elara stood between them, slightly flustered but trying to remain composed.

After a few minutes of light conversation, Asher stepped back toward the entrance.

"I won't distract you from running the office," he said lightly.

She rolled her eyes. "I do not run the office."

He tilted his head. "You could."

And then he left.

The door closed softly behind him.

Maya immediately turned to Elara with wide eyes.

"Oh my God."

"What?" Elara asked, trying to sound calm.

"He looks at you like you're impressive."

Elara's heart skipped.

Daniel nodded. "Yeah. Not in a dramatic way. Just… respectful."

She didn't know what to say to that.

So she sat back down at her desk.

But something felt different now.

Not because he visited.

Not because her coworkers teased her.

But because for the first time, she realized

He didn't just like her softness.

He noticed her strength too.

And that made her smile quietly to herself as she returned to work.
