Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 — When It’s Quiet

Asher's apartment was neat.

Not overly styled. Not messy. Just organized in a way that suggested routine. A bookshelf against the wall. A simple gray couch. A small balcony overlooking the city lights.

He placed his phone on the kitchen counter after their last message.

"Goodnight, Elara."

The words still lingered in his mind.

He poured himself a glass of water, leaning lightly against the counter. The apartment was silent except for the distant hum of traffic below.

He wasn't someone who replayed conversations.

But tonight, he did.

The office.

Her standing there hair in a bun, sleeves buttoned, voice calm and steady.

"You look like you own this place."

He hadn't planned to say that.

It had just been true.

He moved toward the balcony and stepped outside. The night air was cool against his skin.

He rested his hands on the railing.

He had met confident people before.

Ambitious people. Loud people. Impressive people.

But Elara was different.

She wasn't loud about it.

She didn't try to command attention.

Yet when she spoke, people listened.

When something needed fixing, she fixed it without panic.

When others stressed, she steadied them.

He exhaled slowly.

He liked that about her.

Not because it made her strong.

But because it made her safe.

And that surprised him.

He had never thought about safety in that way before.

He went back inside and sat on the couch, leaning his head against the backrest.

He remembered the rain yesterday.

The way she laughed when it started pouring. The way she defended herself when he blamed her for not checking the weather. The way she held his jacket close without making a big deal out of it.

She didn't dramatize moments.

She just lived in them.

He picked up his phone again.

Opened their conversation.

Scrolled up slightly.

"Garden version. Rain version. Office version."

He smiled faintly to himself.

It wasn't that she changed.

It was that she adapted.

Soft in one space. Steady in another. Playful when comfortable.

He respected that.

He respected her.

And that was new.

He wasn't someone who rushed into feelings.

He didn't romanticize simple interactions.

But tonight, sitting alone in his quiet apartment, he admitted something silently

He looked forward to seeing her.

Not because he needed excitement.

Not because he was chasing something dramatic.

But because time felt… lighter around her.

Easier.

He stood up and turned off the main lights, leaving only the soft lamp near the couch glowing.

Before heading to bed, he glanced at his phone one last time.

No new messages.

He didn't need one.

He already knew tomorrow would come.

And most likely…

He would find himself near her again.

Not intentionally obvious.

Not overly planned.

Just naturally.

Asher lay down, staring at the ceiling for a moment.

And for the first time in a while, his thoughts weren't about work deadlines or responsibilities.

They were about a girl who wore her hair in a bun and didn't even realize how impressive she was.

He closed his eyes slowly.

Not smiling widely.

Just quietly content.
