Chapter 1 - The App I Didn’t Want

Let's get one thing straight: I didn't join Discord because I wanted a new hobby. In fact, I spent a long time actively trying to avoid it.

I had this friend who'd been bugging me for ages to download the app. "Get Discord, man, it it's where everyone is," he'd say. But I was not buying it. I already knew how those things worked—they're just digital black holes designed to suck away your time. I wanted to stay focused on my actual life, not another set of notifications.

Then came late November 2024, I think. You know that feeling when you see a YouTuber playing a game and it looks so easy that you think, "I could totally do that"? That was me with Among Us. I wasn't even looking for friends; I just wanted to figure out who the Imposter was before they stabbed me in the back. My username was Noob me—very creative(not actually), I know—and I was just another random in the lobby, killing time as a tiny, multicolored astronaut.

But then, I landed in a game with a trio that actually had a vibe.

There was snowwhite, a 17-year-old girl who was exactly my age, and Izumi, a guy who was about three years older than us. There was a third guy too, but he was more like a background character. I was the fourth wheel, the silent random standing in the corner of the dropship while they sent each other friend requests.

I'll be honest: seeing a girl named snowwhite in the chat definitely caught my eye. My 17-year-old brain went, "Wait, let's see if I can actually talk to a female for once." (😭)

"Hey," I typed, trying to sound casual and not too desperate. "Accept my friend request too, please?".

They did. And as we played, it became about more than just a username. Izumi was chill, the banter was good, and for the first time, I felt like I I'd found a squad I genuinely wanted to keep around. For the next few nights, 10:00 PM became our sacred hour. We'd all hop on, floating around in digital space, talking about everything and nothing. It felt good. We were bonded.

But Among Us chat is a nightmare for actual friendship. You can can't exactly have a deep heart-to-heart while a timer is ticking down and someone is accusing you of venting in Medical. We needed a real place to talk.

I suggested Telegram. Izumi said he was down for whatever—he was everywhere anyway. But snowwhite was stubborn. She didn didn't just suggest Discord; she insisted on it.

The fourth guy who used to play with us wasn't there that night. He just vanished into the "offline" abyss, and we never heard from him again. But because I wanted to stay in touch with the squad—and okay, mostly because she wouldn wouldn't take 'no' for an answer—I finally broke my rule.

I went to the Google Playstore, searched for that little purple controller icon, and hit 'Install'. I thought I was just joining a chat app to keep the game going. I didn't realize I was stepping into a loop that would eventually swallow my time, my grades, and my sanity.

On the screen, "Noob me" was about to become Beyōnd.

Welcome to the Cycle.
