Chapter 4 - The First Day of the Adventure

"Why didn't you kill it?"

Leaving the Elf Forest, but as it was already late, Rhodes and Serie began to set up camp on the spot.

This was their first day as companions.

In Rhodes's hand, he was holding a long-eared rabbit with a slender horn on its gray forehead.

With Serie's help, Rhodes successfully captured his first prey since transmigrating to this world.

Speaking of which, he was quite lucky; for all the time he had been here, the monsters he encountered were the kind he couldn't defeat but could escape from.

The rabbit in his hand, according to Serie, was called a Grayhorn Rabbit. It was very weak in combat; despite the slender horn on its head, it had no attacking power. Its only advantage was its speed in escaping.

It could be said to be at the lowest end of the food chain in this world.

"A an Elf telling me to kill feels a bit strange."

Rhodes pulled out a small knife made of stone, and in a few swift motions, sent the Grayhorn Rabbit to meet the Goddess.

"Do you think I'm like a normal Elf?" Serie curled her lips into a smile.

Compared to other Elves, she was an anomaly.

"Indeed, I've only heard of one type of Elf that likes war, and that's the Dark Elf."

"What is that?" Serie was somewhat puzzled by the unfamiliar word.

"Hasn't it appeared yet?" Rhodes muttered to himself. It seemed that in the Mythological Era, Elves hadn't developed so many branches. However, it seemed the Elves in Frieren only had one form, which was an almost immortal existence, the most ancient Elf.

"Nothing, you can understand it as a demonized Elf."

"Completely incomprehensible."

In Serie's view, Elf and demonization were two completely different concepts. Once demonized, it was already a monster, so how could it still be called an Elf?

"Never mind, you won't encounter them anyway. How about trying some barbecue? By the way, can you eat meat?"

Rhodes skillfully cut the rabbit meat into small pieces, skewered them, and roasted them over the flames.

From time to time, he would take out some bottles and jars from his bag and sprinkle their contents on the meat.

A fragrant aroma wafted from it.

"What is this?" Without immediately answering Rhodes's question, Serie instead became curious about his bottles and jars.

"Oh, these are my seasonings. These are my most precious treasures."

Rhodes showed Serie the contents of his pocket.

These were his biggest gains during his wandering days.

Fortunately, some plants in this world looked extremely similar to those in reality, and with the fearless spirit of Shennong tasting a hundred herbs, Rhodes acquired many spices.

Serie took a bottle, opened it, and sniffed. The pungent smell made her let out a small sneeze.

"Boring." She tossed the bottle back to Rhodes.

She couldn't quite understand it. It was such a choking substance, with an aroma comparable to poison, yet when sprinkled on food, it made the food more delicious.

Could this also be his magic?

Before long, the meat was roasted, and a skewer of barbecue was handed to her.

"Want a skewer?"

The elements were incredibly chaotic, but Serie didn't dislike it, so she took it.

Taking a bite, it was a delicious taste she had never experienced before, and even her tense little face softened considerably.

"By the way, do you Elves eat meat?"

Rhodes remembered that the Elves in Frieren ate meat, at least Frieren herself did. He wondered if the Elves of the Mythological Era had a taste for it.

"No."

Serie shook her head. The Elves of the Elf Forest disliked food with overly complex elemental power.

However, it was said that in other parts of the world, some Elves chose to eat meat, after all, the Elf race in this world was not limited to just those in the Elf Forest.

It's just that the Elves of the Elf Forest were closer to their most primitive form.

"It's very similar to the legendary description of Elves."

There wasn't much meat on one Grayhorn Rabbit, and the two quickly finished eating. Rhodes originally wanted to look for edible mushrooms, but Serie stopped him.

"It's best not to wander around. This is already outside the Elf Forest."

The implication was that they could encounter monster attacks at any time.

You know, this world was incredibly chaotic.

It was filled with monsters, and from these monsters, a more intelligent race with more magical abilities was born: the Demon race, which was currently the main opponent of the Elf race.

She was somewhat curious.

How had this human in front of her managed to survive in this world until now?

He had no sense of danger, and his combat power was not much stronger than a Grayhorn Rabbit. He probably couldn't defeat any random monster that came along.

Yet, such a person possessed the talent to create magic, and even appeared before her.

Serie didn't believe in gods. Even if the Goddess herself appeared before her one day, she would secretly ponder how to kill her.

But now, all these things made her feel that it was all a divine arrangement.

"Alright, do you want to rest? Or should we take turns on watch?"

Rhodes picked up a torch and some wood, snapped his fingers to light them all, and then distributed them evenly around the campsite.

The light of a single torch was very faint, but it was very clear in the dark, and the warmth it emitted kept mosquitoes away.

"What are you doing?" Serie found it a bit difficult to understand.

"Using fire to drive away wild beasts! Of course, this torch has been enchanted with my magic, so it should burn all night without a problem."

Serie was silent for a moment, then slowly said, "I suggest you put out these torches. Most monsters in this world are not afraid of fire, and doing this will only attract them."

Surely this man was blessed by the gods, wasn't he?

Such a careless person hadn't been eaten by monsters; it could only be described as illogical.

Hearing Serie's advice, Rhodes thought about it and found it very reasonable, so he extinguished all the torches.

Serie then cast a spell, and a green magic circle appeared before her, followed by a wave of ripples that began to spread outwards.

"What kind of magic is this?"

"It's an Elf-specific warning magic. Once a creature approaches the magic's range, an alarm will be triggered."

Good stuff!

Rhodes's eyes lit up. This was truly essential magic for wilderness travel. He had thought that this little grand-master in front of him only knew spells aimed at killing opponents, but he didn't expect her to know this kind of magic as well.

"Teach me! Miss Serie!" Rhodes clasped his hands together on the spot, his tone very sincere.

Serie smiled and said, "Alright, but you have to tell me first, where is your destination?"

"I have no destination."

Rhodes really didn't know where to go now.

Mainly, he had been in this world for over a year and hadn't seen a single fellow human. If Serie hadn't mentioned the existence of humans, he would have doubted that humans had even appeared in this era yet.

"Well, let's take it one step at a time. Isn't traveling an adventure full of unknowns?"

Looking at Rhodes, who was smiling foolishly, Serie said nothing, only quietly remarking, "What a funny guy."
