Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Road and the Hut

The sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a golden hue over the bustling streets. James maneuvered his worn-out scooter through the honking traffic, his backpack heavy with the weight of another day's deliveries. Each stop brought a mix of emotions—some smiles when a customer greeted him warmly, some frustration as cars honked impatiently behind him, and moments of quiet reflection as he zipped past crowded lanes. Delivery after delivery, the city unfolded before him like a living, breathing organism—chaotic, relentless, yet strangely intimate.

By the time his final drop-off was done, James's stomach reminded him of its own persistence. He steered toward a small street-side eatery he often frequented. The aroma of frying spices and simmering curries greeted him like an old friend. Other delivery riders were already there, chatting and laughing over their modest meals. James joined them, savoring his dinner slowly, every bite a small comfort after the long, tiresome day. Conversation flowed around him—some talk of work, some of trivial jokes—but for James, it was a fleeting moment of peace before returning to the reality waiting at home.

His home was a modest hut tucked in a quiet alley, barely more than four walls and a roof patched in places. Inside, life was simple but demanding. His parents, weathered by years of daily wage labor, were weary yet persistent, their hands always busy, their minds always calculating how to survive another day. His younger brother and sister played quietly in the corner, their laughter small but bright against the hum of daily struggle.

James's life straddled two worlds. By day, he was a college student, balancing lectures, assignments, and the looming pressure of his final year. By evening, he became a delivery boy, weaving through traffic and fatigue with a resilience that only necessity could cultivate. Yet beneath the routine, his mind wandered—dreams of a life bigger than the streets he traversed, thoughts of love and companionship, questions about whether he would ever be seen, truly seen, by someone who mattered. Could he chase his ambitions without losing himself? Could he ever love and be loved in return?

This story is about those roads—the literal ones he rides every day and the metaphorical ones that stretch before him in life. It is about the struggles of a young man who bears the weight of his family, the flickers of hope that light his path, and the relentless pursuit of dreams that seem just out of reach. James's journey is one of ups and downs, of laughter and tears, of hunger and ambition, of love sought and perhaps, love yet to find him.
