Cherreads

Chapter 26 - Full-Court Chaos

It was a bright Saturday morning. The school gym smelled of polished wood, sweat, and excitement.

The annual 7th Grade Basketball Tournament was happening, and almost everyone from Grace and Julian's circle was either playing, cheering, or both.

Grace, Zoey, Ella, David, Dylan, Ethan, and Julian were all on the sidelines, cheering loudly for their team — Grace and Julian occasionally trading small glances.

Across the court, Nate, Adrian, Theo, Lucy, Claire, Peyton, Denise, and even Lily were either playing for the other team or watching from the bleachers.

The game started. And the chaos began immediately.

Dylan sprinted down the court, passing to Ethan, who made a sloppy but impressive shot.

David clapped and yelled, "Yes! That's how we do it!"

Grace jumped up, cheering like crazy. Julian grinned at her energy, laughing at how animated she was.

Lily, watching from the other side, rolled her eyes. "Still so loud," she muttered.

Grace barely noticed. She was too focused on the game… and Julian.

Mid-game, Julian accidentally collided with Lily while going for a rebound.

"Whoa!" she exclaimed. "Grace! Watch him!"

Grace, already tense, stepped up immediately. "Julian's fine. Thanks."

Julian shot her a quick, embarrassed smile. Grace's eyes softened. She knew exactly what he meant with that look: I've got this.

Zoey elbowed Ella. "That's cute."

Ella whispered, "Watch. Lily's going to try something."

Sure enough, Lily attempted to intercept Julian again, this time trying to pass the ball toward her own teammate while brushing past him flirtatiously.

Julian didn't falter. He dodged her smoothly, passed to Dylan, and then sprinted back toward Grace, who clapped and cheered louder than anyone.

Lily groaned. "Seriously?"

Meanwhile, the rest of the group noticed the interactions and silently coordinated:

David and Ethan shouted encouragement to Grace so she stayed animated.

Zoey leaned over, whispering, "Ignore her."

Dylan and Nate pretended to compete loudly, but subtly blocked Lily whenever she tried to interfere.

Ella stayed near Grace, giving her reassuring smiles.

Julian glanced at Grace mid-play and winked. She blushed.

The game was tight. Everyone was invested. Every shot, every pass, every cheer was amplified by the energy of the group.

By halftime, the scoreboard was nearly even. The tension in the gym was electric.

During the break, Lily tried to corner Julian by the water station.

Grace walked up first. "Need some help?" she said sweetly, but with ice in her voice.

Julian turned. "I'm fine," he said, looking at Lily.

But Lily tried to smile, thinking she could intimidate Grace.

Dylan and David flanked Grace. Zoey and Ella stood slightly behind her. Even Ethan leaned in casually.

Julian glanced at them. "I told you. She's with me."

Grace smirked. "She's also with all of us."

Lily froze. The group's unity was obvious. She had no openings.

Julian squeezed Grace's hand under the table quietly — a silent "I've got you" — and Grace's grin returned.

The second half of the game was chaos.

Dylan stole the ball mid-pass.

Ethan accidentally bumped into Peyton, causing a small tumble.

Zoey cheered loudly enough to distract Lily several times.

Grace and Julian exchanged quiet jokes in the stands while everyone else fought for victory on the court.

By the final buzzer, the score was neck-and-neck. Julian made the winning shot — assisted by Dylan and Ethan — and the gym erupted.

Grace and the group went wild. They hugged, screamed, and jumped on each other in celebration. Julian hugged Grace tightly, whispering, "We did it."

Grace laughed, hiding her face in his chest. "We really did."

Even Lily had to step back, realizing she couldn't break this circle.

The rest of the group — Nate, Adrian, Theo, Lucy, Claire, Peyton, Denise — joined in the post-game chaos, shaking hands, teasing, laughing.

It was messy. Loud. Dramatic. Perfect.

Later, outside the gym, Grace sat on the steps with Julian beside her.

"Thanks," she said quietly.

"For what?"

"For… this. For sticking with me. For… all of it."

Julian shrugged, playful. "I mean, I didn't really have a choice. You're kind of… unavoidable."

Grace laughed. "I guess that's true."

He leaned closer, brushing his hand against hers. "Unavoidable… and my favorite."

Grace smiled. The sun was setting. Her friends were scattered around them, still celebrating.

The group dynamic had shifted completely:

No one could touch Grace without the whole squad noticing.

Julian and Grace's connection was obvious but balanced.

Everyone, even Theo and Lucy, had adjusted to the new reality.

Lily learned she couldn't manipulate this group.

And in that moment… Grace felt like she truly belonged.
