Chapter 29 - Finals Frenzy at Grace’s House

The last week before finals hit the 9th graders like a storm.

Grace sat at her desk, surrounded by notebooks, textbooks stacked higher than her elbow, and half a dozen colored pens scattered across the floor. Her head hurt from memorizing formulas, vocabulary lists, and historical dates.

A knock at the door broke her panic-induced haze.

"Grace! Open up!" Zoey's voice shouted.

Before she could answer, the door burst open. One by one, the squad arrived:

Julian, balancing his own notebooks and snacks.

Ella, clutching a huge stack of revision sheets.

Dylan and Ethan, arms loaded with highlighters and more snacks than books.

David, calm but fully armed with formulas and flashcards.

Lucy and Claire, carrying notes for subjects they knew they could help with.

Adrian and Theo, quietly setting their own study spots.

Even Nate, Peyton, and Dylan's enthusiasm-filled antics came later.

Lily and Zara? Nowhere in sight. And that was perfect.

Grace blinked. "Uh… did everyone bring half the school?"

Julian smirked. "We bring the army when finals attack."

Zoey plopped down on the couch. "And snacks. Always snacks."

Ella laughed. "We're doing this together. No one is failing on my watch."

Rules of the Study Squad:

Divide and conquer: Each person took one subject.

Explain, don't just read: If someone didn't get it, the others explained until they did.

Snacks every 45 minutes: Mandatory sugar intake.

Breaks for chaos: Pranks and mini-challenges allowed, but strictly timed.

Grace, Julian, Zoey, Ella, Ethan, Dylan, and David naturally dominated the living room. Lucy, Claire, Adrian, and Theo quietly set up in the dining area, occasionally popping in for questions.

Chaos began immediately:

Dylan loudly shouted, "Who even invented trigonometry?! I want a word with them!"

Ethan snorted, nearly knocking over a cup of tea.

Julian rolled his eyes at Dylan, handing him a perfectly highlighted formula. "Here. Stop yelling and use your brain."

Grace laughed, grateful for the distraction. Even in stress, the group's energy made studying… bearable.

Zoey elbowed her. "Don't let Julian hog all the explanations. You're allowed to explain things too."

Grace nodded, smiling. She loved being the center of quiet leadership in the chaos.

Ella leaned over. "Grace, pass me your notes for chemistry. Your diagrams are better than mine."

Grace handed them over, noticing Julian watching her with a soft smile.

Mid-afternoon meltdown:

By 3 PM, the group was surrounded by crumpled papers, empty snack wrappers, and sticky notes plastered everywhere.

"Stress level: 99%," Lucy groaned.

"Correction," Ethan said. "Stress level: 105%. And I haven't even started English."

David raised an eyebrow. "Then start. You're killing the morale of the squad with that attitude."

Julian leaned back, stretching. "Honestly, I think we've done enough for today."

Grace shook her head. "No! We still have history and physics portions to finish."

Zoey sighed dramatically. "Then let's divide and conquer… again."

Small moments of softness:

Julian whispered a mnemonic trick to Grace for physics.

Grace quietly corrected one of Dylan's messy math solutions.

Zoey and Ella giggled over Latin vocabulary.

David handed Grace a protein bar mid-study, and she laughed, realizing how cared for she was.

Even the usual competitive banter didn't break the harmony.

Evening victory:

By 7 PM, all portions for finals were complete. The room was messy. Everyone was exhausted.

Julian stretched beside Grace. "We did it."

Grace leaned back, letting out a long breath. "We actually did it. I can't believe it."

Dylan jumped up. "Celebrate! Who's ordering pizza?"

Zoey cheered. "Yes! Pizza and dessert!"

Ethan laughed. "And then nap. Nap is mandatory."

Grace glanced around at her friends — at the messy living room, the exhausted but satisfied faces, the subtle warmth in Julian's eyes — and felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

She realized:

Finals were stressful.

But with this group, even impossible tasks felt possible.

No one had to face life — or exams — alone.

And for the first time that week… she smiled without worry.
