Chapter 73 - Chapter 73 — The White Room Belo

The brass key felt warm.

Not from the air.

From within.

Kenji turned it over in his palm. It was old enough that the edges had worn smooth, yet there wasn't a trace of rust on it. Hanging from the ring was the faded tag.

White Room — Below.

He looked down the empty hallway.

There was nowhere to go.

No doors.

No staircase leading lower.

Nothing except peeling wallpaper and decades of silence.

"…Below."

The word lingered in his mind.

He walked back downstairs, stopping where he had first entered the room. The photographs still covered the floor like fallen leaves.

One detail caught his eye.

The photographs weren't random anymore.

They formed a circle.

He frowned.

"I'm certain they weren't like this…"

Kneeling, he reached for the oldest photograph.

The one with the burned-faced figure.

As he lifted it…

A click echoed beneath the floor.

His hand froze.

Another click.

Then another.

The wooden boards shifted ever so slightly.

Dust poured from the seams.

Kenji slowly stepped back as the floor groaned.

One board sank lower than the others.

A hidden compartment.

He slipped the brass key into the narrow opening.

It fit perfectly.

The lock hadn't resisted.

Almost as if it had been waiting.

The key turned by itself.

A deep metallic rumble shook the room.

The floor split apart.

Cold air surged upward, carrying the scent of damp stone and something older than mildew.

It smelled…

Forgotten.

A staircase emerged from the darkness below.

Stone steps spiraled downward, disappearing into blackness.

Kenji stared at the opening.

He should have left.

Every instinct told him to leave.

Call someone.

Tell the police.

Tell Myers.

Tell anyone.

Instead…

He found himself stepping forward.

Each step echoed differently.

Not because of the stone.

Because the silence answered.

His footsteps returned half a second too late.

As though someone below copied every movement.

Step.

…

Step.

He stopped.

The echo continued.

…

Step.

His pulse quickened.

Someone else had taken one final step after he stopped.

Kenji looked into the darkness.

Nothing.

Only the endless staircase.

He kept descending.

The temperature dropped.

His breath became visible.

The walls changed from brick to polished white stone.

No cracks.

No dust.

No cobwebs.

Impossible.

The hidden chamber looked untouched by time.

At the bottom waited a single white door.

No handle.

No hinges.

Only a symbol carved into its center.

A hooked crescent.

The same mark.

Kenji reached toward it.

The symbol pulsed beneath his fingertips.

A quiet voice drifted from the other side.

"…You're late."

His hand jerked away.

"…Who's there?"

Silence.

Then—

"I've been waiting a very long time."

The voice wasn't old.

Nor young.

It carried no anger.

Only exhaustion.

Kenji swallowed.

"What is this place?"

The answer came immediately.

"A memory."

His brow tightened.

"No…"

"A memory that doesn't belong to you."

The hallway became colder.

Something wet touched the back of his hand.

He looked down.

A single drop of water.

No…

Not water.

Blood.

Another drop landed.

Then another.

He looked up.

The ceiling was white.

Perfectly clean.

Yet crimson drops continued falling from nowhere.

One struck the floor.

Instead of spreading…

It vanished.

As though the stone had swallowed it.

The voice spoke again.

"Open the door."

"I don't even know who you are."

"You used to."

Kenji's chest tightened.

"You've mistaken me for someone else."

A long silence followed.

Then…

"No."

"You've mistaken yourself."

The hallway trembled.

Hairline cracks spread through the white walls.

Behind them…

Voices.

Hundreds of them.

Whispering.

Praying.

Screaming.

Crying.

Every sound layered over another until it became impossible to distinguish one from the next.

Kenji covered his ears.

It didn't help.

The voices weren't entering through sound.

They were inside his head.

Fragments flashed across his vision.

A child running through rain.

A hospital monitor flatlining.

A burning church.

A woman kneeling, tears staining a white veil.

Someone shouting—

"Don't let him wake up!"

The vision vanished.

Kenji stumbled against the wall.

His breathing became ragged.

"…Who am I?"

No answer.

Only the soft sound of something unlocking.

Click.

The white door slowly opened inward.

Darkness waited beyond it.

Not ordinary darkness.

It moved.

Like ink drifting through water.

In the center of the room stood a single hospital bed.

Empty.

Above it hung an old medical chart.

A patient's name had been written across the top.

Every letter had been scratched away.

Except one.

K.

Kenji stepped inside.

The door closed behind him.

The room locked itself.

Then…

The heart monitor beside the empty bed suddenly came alive.

Beep.

A pause.

Beep.

Another pause.

Kenji looked around.

There was no patient.

No machine connected to anyone.

Yet the monitor continued.

Steady.

Patient.

Alive.

Then a second heartbeat joined it.

Beep.

…Beep.

Not synchronized.

Two different rhythms.

Someone else…

…was breathing in the room with him.
