The photographs stopped moving.
One by one, they settled across the warped wooden floor.
The room fell silent.
Kenji didn't.
His breathing came in uneven bursts as he searched every corner of the room. The whisper had been close—too close. It hadn't echoed through the walls or drifted from outside.
It had come from behind him.
Yet there was no one there.
The cracked window overlooked an empty alley. The only sound was the steady rain striking rusted fire escapes and overflowing gutters.
He swallowed.
"…Who's there?"
Nothing answered.
He took one cautious step backward.
His heel struck something solid.
The old chair.
It hadn't been behind him before.
He stared at it.
The chair now faced him.
It had been against the wall moments ago.
Kenji's eyes narrowed.
"No…"
He wasn't imagining this.
Someone—or something—had rearranged the room while he wasn't looking.
His gaze drifted back to the photographs scattered across the floor.
Every image still showed him.
Every version of himself still looked directly toward the camera.
Except one.
His heart skipped.
The oldest photograph.
The one with the burned face.
The figure behind him…
…was no longer standing still.
It had turned.
Only slightly.
Barely enough for one shoulder to shift.
Kenji crouched immediately, bringing the photograph inches from his face.
"No…"
His voice cracked.
"I saw you…"
The figure hadn't moved before.
Photographs couldn't change.
Could they?
A sharp knock echoed through the room.
Three slow taps.
Not on the door.
Inside the walls.
…
Tap.
…
Tap.
…
Tap.
Kenji stood frozen.
The sound traveled beneath the wood like someone knocking from inside the building itself.
He looked toward the hallway.
Darkness.
He looked toward the ceiling.
Silence.
Then the knocking stopped.
A faint laugh followed.
Not cruel.
Not mocking.
Almost… relieved.
"As expected."
Kenji spun again.
"Show yourself!"
The words echoed back at him.
No answer.
Instead, another sound reached him.
Pages.
A book.
Somewhere nearby, pages were turning by themselves.
He followed the noise to a tall bookshelf buried beneath decades of dust.
Every shelf held journals.
Hundreds of them.
Leather covers.
No titles.
No names.
He pulled one free.
Dust exploded into the air.
Inside…
No words.
Only dates.
Every page contained a single date.
Nothing else.
1882. 1883. 1884. 1885. 1886. 1887. 1888.
Dozens more.
The final page wasn't blank.
Someone had written today's date.
Fresh ink.
Still wet.
Kenji slowly reached toward it.
His finger stopped just above the page.
Below today's date…
A sentence began writing itself.
The ink appeared stroke by stroke.
No hand held the pen.
No one stood nearby.
Yet the letters continued to form.
Subject has regained Record One.
Kenji stepped backward.
The sentence continued.
Memory restoration has begun.
Another line appeared.
Observer remains unidentified.
Then…
The writing stopped.
The room became perfectly still.
A drop of black ink slid from the bottom of the page.
Instead of falling downward…
…it climbed upward.
Defying gravity.
Kenji watched it crawl across the paper like a living thing.
The droplet reached the top of the page.
Then disappeared.
Every word vanished with it.
The journal became blank.
As though nothing had ever been written.
His pulse hammered inside his ears.
"What…"
He flipped through every page.
Empty.
Every single one.
Had he imagined it?
No.
The ink stain remained on his fingertip.
Proof.
Someone was documenting him.
Not years later.
Not months later.
Now.
As he lived.
As he breathed.
Someone was writing his life in real time.
A cold realization settled over him.
If someone was recording everything…
Then someone already knew what he was going to do next.
The floor creaked.
Not behind him.
Above him.
Kenji slowly raised his head.
A second floor.
He hadn't noticed it before.
The ceiling wasn't cracked.
It was an opening.
A balcony hidden in darkness.
Someone stood there.
Watching.
No face.
No movement.
Just a silhouette.
Waiting.
Neither of them spoke.
Several long seconds passed.
Then the figure quietly closed a thick book.
The sound echoed through the building like the end of a chapter.
The silhouette turned…
…and disappeared into the darkness.
Kenji ran for the staircase.
By the time he reached the upper floor…
No footprints.
No open doors.
No broken windows.
Only a single object resting in the middle of the empty hallway.
An old brass key.
Tied to it was a faded paper tag.
Three words had been written in careful handwriting.
White Room — Below.
