The steel ceiling of Sanctuary began to buckle downward. The groan of metal agonizing under immense pressure sounded like a death choir echoing through every corner of the chamber.
Behind them, the destabilized reactor core emitted blinding pulses of purple light. The time remaining was no longer measured in minutes; it felt like a fleeting breath.
"The primary evacuation route is blocked by debris!" Ray's voice crackled through static distortion inside the comms device in Elena's ear.
"You have to use the old cargo elevator shaft in the north sector. Move now, before the entire structure undergoes a mass implosion!"
Elena glanced back at Louise. Her new ally was still standing, breath hitching, clutching her own body as if holding back something ready to detonate from within her chest.
Meanwhile, the geometric patterns pulsing across Louise's skin continued to radiate an intense heat, warping the surrounding air like a shimmering mirage.
"Can you walk?" Elena asked, urgency lacing her voice.
Louise merely offered a faint nod. She stepped forward, each boot heel striking the iron floor and leaving behind a smoking, singed footprint.
Together, they began sprinting through the collapsing corridor.
Elena limped ahead, firing the last of her electromagnetic rounds into shattered glass and falling debris to clear a path.
Behind her, Louise pressed forward on whatever remained of her human strength. The imaginary molten copper coursing through her veins burned hotter with every muscle she forced to work.
"Keep moving, Louise! Just a little further!" Elena yelled, kicking open a crumpled metal door.
They reached the north cargo lift gate, but their hopes shattered instantly. A massive concrete support pillar had collapsed, lying diagonally to completely block the entrance to the lift.
Elena swore fiercely. She jammed her rifle barrel under the concrete pillar, attempting to use it as a lever. The torn muscle in her injured shoulder tore further under the strain, spilling fresh blood onto her black uniform. Yet despite her desperate effort... the pillar didn't budge. It didn't shift even a single millimeter.
"Damn it! This thing is too heavy!" Elena shouted in frustration, kicking the concrete with the last of her strength.
As despair began to choke them, Louise stepped forward slowly. Her eyes; now glowing pupil-less purple... stared intently at the concrete pillar.
Through her altered vision, she no longer saw a solid mass. Instead, she perceived a lattice of vibrating calcium and steel molecular bonds oscillating at a distinct frequency.
"Step back, Elena," Louise whispered with a dual voice. Her tone sounded like two audio tracks playing simultaneously.
"What are you doing? Your body can't take any more strain!" Elena exclaimed, fear and worry evident in her voice.
Louise didn't answer. Raising her brightly glowing palm, she slammed it directly against the cold concrete surface. She channeled the lethal energy coursing through her veins, forcing it out through her pores—a direct application of Molecular Dissonance.
Instantly, a localized shockwave erupted from her palm. The massive concrete pillar violently shuddered, fractured internally, and disintegrated into a dense cloud of dust within seconds.
The path to the lift was cleared at last, but the toll was catastrophic.
Louise coughed violently, vomiting black blood that vaporized the moment it hit the floor. Her balance gave out, sending her collapsing forward.
Instinct took over for Elena. She lunged forward, reaching out with both hands to catch Louise's falling body.
"Don't touch me!" Louise roared with what little energy she had left, twisting her body to evade Elena's reach.
Elena froze, her hands trembling mere centimeters from Louise's shoulder. The blistering heat radiating off Louise's skin instantly scorched the tips of Elena's leather gloves. That tiny distance felt like an impassable abyss.
Amidst the ruins waiting to swallow them whole, this tragedy cut deeper than any reactor explosion. In this moment, Elena had to stifle her basic human instinct to help, while Louise was forced to endure her agony in absolute isolation.
"I'm sorry," Elena whispered in a shaky voice.
She pulled her hands back, steeling her resolve.
"Get up, Louise."
Gritting her teeth, Louise pushed against the scorched wall and forced herself back onto her feet.
Together, they stepped onto the open platform of the cargo lift. Elena immediately pulled the manual mechanical lever.
The massive steel chains above them groaned loudly, slowly hauling the platform up through the pitch-black shaft.
Just as their lift reached fifty meters above Sanctuary, the base of the facility finally gave out. There was no grand burst of fire, only a gravitational drag that sounded like the exhalation of a giant.
The reactor underwent a Singularity Implosion, pulling in and swallowing entire floors, debris, and the corpses of ACVA soldiers into a single artificial gravitational center before leveling everything to the ground.
The upward blast of displaced air slammed into the bottom of their lift, propelling the platform upward at breakneck speed.
Inside the darkened lift, Elena slumped against the cold iron wall, her breathing ragged. In the opposite corner, Louise sat clutching her knees in silence. The purple luminescence emanating from her skin served as the sole light source inside the pitch-black shaft.
They had escaped hell. Yet as Louise stared at her hands—hands that no longer belonged entirely to a human being—she knew this escape was merely the dawn of a far greater nightmare waiting above.
