Chapter 26 - Cautious

The palace felt different after the breach. Not louder, not more active, but quieter in a way that made people uneasy. Guards held eye contact a little longer when passing one another. Servants bowed and moved away quickly rather than lingering. Conversations stopped whenever unfamiliar footsteps approached. Fear had settled into the palace without announcement, spreading through habits rather than words.

Kylrus stood in the central operations chamber with a detailed map of the capital spread across a large stone table. Red markers had been placed across key locations throughout the city: the southern industrial quarter, the western noble district, the northern merchant storage yards, and two separate palace access corridors. Each represented either a confirmed infiltration point or a suspected operational zone. Selene stood beside him, reviewing reports while several intelligence officers waited silently near the walls.

"We found three compromised rotation schedules," Selene reported.

Kylrus did not immediately look up from the map.

"Leaked?"

"Yes."

"Source?"

She hesitated briefly before answering.

"The western registry office."

The western district fell under Lucian's supervision.

Kylrus finally lifted his eyes.

"Bring me the clerk."

The registry clerk was not a conspirator. That much became obvious almost immediately. By the time he was brought into the chamber, he was already trembling. He knelt so quickly that one of the guards nearly stumbled trying to keep pace with him.

"I-I thought it was routine," the clerk stammered. "He said it was an inspection."

"Who?" Kylrus asked calmly.

"A representative from the Ministerial Oversight Division."

"There is no such division."

The clerk's face drained of color.

"I know that now."

"He had official documents?"

"Yes."

"Forged documents?"

"Yes."

Kylrus turned slightly toward Selene.

"Trace the seal origin."

She nodded immediately.

The clerk looked as though he expected execution. Kylrus studied him for several seconds. There was no deception in his expression. No hidden agenda. Just carelessness and misplaced trust.

"Confine him," Kylrus said.

The clerk nearly collapsed in relief.

"No execution?"

"No execution."

The guards escorted him away.

Once the doors closed, Lucian stepped forward.

"That was my district."

Kylrus met his gaze.

"Yes."

Lucian swallowed.

"I failed."

Kylrus's expression remained unchanged.

"You were outmaneuvered."

Lucian actually flinched slightly.

"That's worse."

Kylrus nodded once.

"Then learn faster."

The words were not cruel. They were not spoken with disappointment or anger. They were simply expectation. For the first time, Lucian did not defend himself or search for excuses.

"I will."

That answer pleased Kylrus more than any apology could have.

Later that afternoon, Emperor Caelus addressed the High Council personally. There was no ceremonial gathering, no public audience, and no political theater. He simply entered the council chamber and announced the beginning of a full internal audit.

"Every noble household. Every contracted guard company. Every supply route. Every merchant consortium."

Murmurs spread instantly through the chamber.

One duke rose carefully.

"Your Majesty, such actions imply distrust among the nobility."

Caelus barely glanced at him.

"They imply survival."

The room fell silent.

The Emperor's aura expanded slightly. It was not an act of intimidation. It was merely a reminder of reality.

"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."

No one challenged him after that.

Kylrus watched quietly from the side of the chamber. Moments like this reminded him why his father commanded such authority. Caelus did not need speeches. He did not need threats. He simply stated facts and expected obedience.

By nightfall, Selene returned with new intelligence.

"We found a warehouse in the southern quarter," she reported. "False flooring. Hidden mana conduits beneath."

Kylrus immediately focused on her.

"Suppression nodes?"

"Yes."

"Quantity?"

"At least eight."

Kylrus studied the map carefully. The warehouse sat directly beneath a densely populated civilian district. The realization settled almost instantly.

"They aren't simply attacking targets anymore."

Selene nodded.

"They're building infrastructure."

"If activated simultaneously?"

"It could suppress a quarter of the capital."

The room fell silent.

Kylrus's jaw tightened slightly.

"Quiet operation," he ordered. "No public disclosure. No panic."

Cassian stepped forward immediately.

"I'll lead the strike team."

Kylrus shook his head.

"No."

Cassian frowned.

"You cannot keep entering suppression zones alone."

"I won't."

The answer surprised him.

Kylrus turned toward Lucian.

"You're coming with me."

Lucian blinked once.

"Understood."

Neither of them commented on the significance of the choice.

The operation began after midnight. No banners accompanied them. No official declarations. No military procession. They entered the warehouse as shadows, moving through darkness and silence.

The interference became noticeable almost immediately.

The air felt heavier.

Not enough to disable a mage.

Enough to be felt.

Lucian's expression tightened.

"You feel that?"

"Yes."

"Does it hurt?"

"Not yet."

They descended beneath the false floor and found exactly what Selene had described. Eight suppression nodes were embedded directly into the stone supports. Three operators monitored the network.

Kylrus did not waste time speaking.

He moved.

Lucian followed.

The operators reacted quickly, attempting a coordinated withdrawal while protecting the control mechanisms. They were trained. Experienced.

But they had prepared for a single target.

Not two.

Kylrus neutralized the first operator within seconds. Lucian intercepted the second before he could reach an emergency trigger. Steel rang sharply through the underground chamber as suppression intensified slightly.

Fifteen percent.

Kylrus felt the difference immediately.

Lucian noticed it as well.

His positioning changed without instruction. He shifted to cover Kylrus's blind side, compensating for the minor reduction in reaction speed.

Kylrus noticed.

He simply said nothing.

The final operator attempted to trigger a detonation sequence.

Kylrus threw his sword.

The blade crossed the chamber and struck the man's forearm with surgical precision. The trigger fell from his hand.

The suppression network hummed violently for several seconds before stabilizing.

Lucian disarmed the final opponent.

Silence returned.

Kylrus approached the central conduit and examined it carefully.

"They're preparing synchronized activation."

Lucian exhaled.

"They're patient."

"Yes."

With measured force, Kylrus shattered the conduit.

The entire suppression field collapsed.

Mana flowed normally once again.

Lucian watched him for several moments before speaking.

"You didn't flare."

"No."

"You're adapting."

Kylrus offered no response.

Lucian hesitated before continuing.

"When they took Isolde... did you panic?"

For the briefest moment, Kylrus paused.

"Yes."

Lucian nodded slowly.

"Good."

Kylrus raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Because you're still human."

For the first time in several days, something shifted behind Kylrus's eyes.

Far to the north, the cloaked leader stood upon a canyon platform while reports were delivered around him. Cold winds swept across the stone cliffs, carrying the scent of distant smoke.

"They found the warehouse."

"Expected."

"They brought the second prince."

The cloaked figure tapped his fingers lightly against the railing.

"Good."

The lieutenant frowned.

"You intended that?"

"Yes."

The cloaked figure turned slightly toward the horizon.

"If the fracture spreads through the royal family, the empire destabilizes more quickly."

"And if it strengthens them?"

A faint smile appeared beneath the hood.

"Then he becomes what prophecy requires."

The lieutenant hesitated.

"And what is that?"

The figure's voice softened.

"The blade that breaks itself."

Back in the capital, Kylrus stood upon the palace balcony overlooking the city. Thousands of lights stretched across the darkness below, each one representing a life depending on stability he could not afford to lose.

This time Lucian stood beside him without invitation.

Neither spoke for several moments.

Finally, Lucian broke the silence.

"They want you unstable."

"Yes."

"They're wrong."

Kylrus glanced at him briefly.

Lucian's expression was firm.

"You're not fracturing."

Kylrus turned back toward the horizon where distant smoke from the northern ridge still stained the night sky.

"Not yet."

The wind carried the scent of war from beyond the capital. The organization was building something larger than raids, larger than suppression devices, and larger than political sabotage.

Soon, the canyon would no longer contain the conflict.

And when that happened, the entire Valerios Empire would feel the impact.
