Chapter 25 - Inside the Walls

The palace never truly slept. Even at its quietest, servants moved through distant corridors, guards exchanged shifts, and torchlight flickered across marble walls. But at night, the palace relaxed. Footsteps softened. Conversations lowered. The entire structure seemed to exhale after carrying the weight of the empire throughout the day.

Kylrus sat alone in his study reviewing reports when he felt it.

Not a surge.

Not an attack.

A subtraction.

Mana shifted subtly throughout the palace, as though someone had quietly removed air from a sealed room. The sensation was so faint that most mages would never have noticed it. But Kylrus's fractured core reacted immediately. The crack within his chest pulsed once.

Not pain.

A warning.

His eyes lifted from the documents.

Then he stood.

The corridor outside should have contained two guards. Instead, both collapsed almost simultaneously. Neither cried out. Neither had time to react. Their bodies simply struck the stone floor with dull impacts that echoed through the silence.

Kylrus moved instantly.

No aura.

No shout.

No alarm.

Silence meant something important.

This was not an assault.

It was an extraction.

As he turned the corner, three masked figures came into view. Their movements were efficient and coordinated. One of them had anchored a compact suppression device to the ceiling. It was far more advanced than the probes discovered in the canyon. A low hum filled the corridor as mana density gradually decreased.

Five percent.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Kylrus slowed instead of accelerating.

The attackers carried someone between them.

A small figure.

Silver hair.

Isolde.

His vision narrowed.

Not Lucian.

Not Lysandra.

Not Selene.

Not Cassian.

They had chosen the youngest and most vulnerable member of the royal family.

Deliberately.

Strategically.

Kylrus stepped fully into the corridor.

"Put her down."

The figures did not hesitate.

One activated a secondary mechanism.

The hum deepened.

Mana pressure dropped further.

Twenty-five percent suppression.

Kylrus felt the pressure tighten around his core. The crack pulsed sharply in response. He did not release mana. Instead, he compressed it inward and minimized external leakage. His hand settled upon the hilt of his sword.

One of the attackers moved first.

Fast.

Controlled.

Professional.

Their blade cut toward his neck. Kylrus blocked smoothly. A second attacker immediately flanked from the side while the third continued carrying Isolde toward the outer wing.

The coordination was military.

Not fanatic.

Not desperate.

Kylrus shifted position deliberately, forcing the confrontation away from occupied sections of the palace. He refused to allow collateral damage. A blade grazed his side during the exchange, drawing blood but little else.

A test.

Nothing more.

He answered by disarming the first attacker cleanly.

Then the suppression field intensified.

Thirty percent.

His reaction speed narrowed.

The crack burned.

The third attacker continued retreating with Isolde.

Kylrus made a choice.

Instead of pursuing the nearest threat, he lunged directly toward the kidnapper.

The two remaining attackers anticipated the move. Their blades crossed before him, attempting to halt his advance. Rather than forcing through, Kylrus dropped low and swept forward. One knee shattered beneath precise force. The attacker collapsed instantly.

Kylrus rose into the second opponent and drove an elbow into the man's throat.

The suppression deepened again.

Forty percent.

Pain lanced through his chest.

For a fraction of a second, his footing faltered.

Almost.

Only almost.

The final attacker reached the outer corridor.

Kylrus exhaled slowly.

Then he changed tactics.

Instead of resisting the suppression field, he redirected his mana internally. Every flow pathway tightened. Every burst became compressed. Short. Efficient. Precise.

Two steps.

That was all it took.

He crossed the distance instantly.

His hand seized the attacker's collar.

The man slammed into the wall hard enough to crack stone.

The suppression device overhead flickered violently.

Kylrus tore away the mask.

A young man stared back at him.

Not insane.

Not frightened.

Resolved.

"You won't break him," the man hissed.

Kylrus tightened his grip.

"Who?"

A faint smile appeared.

"You fracture."

Kylrus's patience thinned.

"Who."

The man's jaw clenched.

Then a pulse activated beneath his collar.

A suicide crystal.

Kylrus threw him aside immediately.

The resulting explosion was small but precise. The attacker died instantly. More importantly, the suppression device above shattered.

Mana pressure returned all at once.

The corridor fell silent.

The remaining attackers lay unconscious.

Isolde coughed weakly where she had fallen.

Kylrus dropped beside her immediately.

"Isolde."

Her eyes fluttered open.

"Brother...?"

"I'm here."

She tried to sit up.

He steadied her carefully.

"You scared them," she whispered.

Kylrus ignored the comment and examined her mana channels. Minor shock. No lasting damage. No structural injuries. She would recover.

Heavy footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Lucian arrived first.

Sword already drawn.

He froze as he took in the scene.

"You were alone?"

"Yes."

Lucian's jaw tightened.

"They breached the inner palace."

"Yes."

Cassian arrived moments later, followed by Emperor Caelus himself. The Emperor's gaze immediately settled upon the shattered suppression device.

"Inside the walls," he said quietly.

Kylrus nodded.

"Yes."

Caelus's eyes moved toward Isolde.

"She was chosen deliberately."

"They want personal destabilization."

Lucian studied him carefully.

"You didn't flare."

Kylrus shook his head.

"They wanted panic."

Isolde weakly gripped his sleeve.

"I'm sorry."

For the first time that night, Kylrus's expression softened.

"You did nothing wrong."

But internally, a realization settled into place.

The enemy had changed tactics.

This was no longer about public attacks.

No longer about battlefield testing.

They were targeting relationships.

Attachments.

Responsibilities.

They were no longer studying his strength.

They were studying what he loved.

Later, inside the war chamber, the suppression device rested disassembled upon a stone table. Kylrus examined every component in silence while Caelus stood opposite him. The Emperor's expression remained unreadable.

"They've refined the design."

"Yes."

"Range?"

"Short. Precise. Intended for controlled environments."

Caelus folded his arms.

"They breached the inner palace."

Kylrus finally looked up.

"They studied guard rotations."

The silence that followed was answer enough.

There was a traitor somewhere within the court.

Caelus's voice lowered.

"We cleanse the palace."

Kylrus nodded.

"Quietly."

The Emperor watched him for a long moment.

"You were calmer tonight."

Kylrus met his father's gaze.

"I cannot afford anger."

Caelus's jaw tightened slightly.

"You are not made of stone."

"No."

Kylrus's voice remained quiet.

"I am made of consequence."

For a moment, neither spoke.

The words felt far older than the young man who had spoken them.

Finally, Caelus nodded.

"The leader moves next."

Kylrus's eyes darkened.

"Yes."

This time, he would not wait for another probe.

This time, he would hunt.

Far north, deep within the canyon depths, the cloaked leader listened as reports were delivered before him. The lieutenant knelt nearby, silent and disciplined despite his earlier failure.

"He adapted again."

"Yes."

"And the girl?"

"Unharmed."

The cloaked figure smiled faintly.

"Good."

The lieutenant hesitated.

"You intended that?"

"Yes."

The figure turned toward the darkness stretching deeper into the tunnels.

"Pressure reveals loyalty."

"And?"

The smile remained.

"He tightens."

The leader's voice softened.

"But everything that tightens eventually develops fracture lines."

His gaze shifted southward.

Toward the capital.

"Prepare the canyon gates."

The next battle would not be hidden in shadows.

And it would not end quietly.
