Reacher remained silent for several seconds.
Then he turned to Lina and gave her a small smile, as though her words had finally given him something to think about.
"I understand. Thank you, Lina."
With that, Reacher returned to the private room.
Lina stayed where she was.
She had no intention of going back inside immediately. The room was filled with cigarette smoke, alcohol and the kind of atmosphere that made her feel increasingly uncomfortable, but she could not simply leave without saying a word to Gareth Foster. Her contract with the agency had only two days left, and although she had already made up her mind not to renew it, she had no desire to create unnecessary trouble before the contract officially ended.
For now, it was better to wait.
She decided to walk around for a while and let the remaining time pass.
At the end of the corridor, Lina noticed a window.
Fresh air sounded far more appealing than another few minutes trapped in a room full of smoke.
