Chapter 21 - Chapter 22: Connecting the Dots

Morning arrived, but it brought no sense of relief.

Brian had barely slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the forgotten evaluation report lying on the conference room table, Damien's calm expression as he met Stephen Hale after business hours, and the realization that someone inside the company was quietly deciding people's futures.

The office looked exactly as it always had.

Employees chatted while waiting for the elevators. Coffee machines hummed. Printers echoed through the departments. Managers walked briskly through the hallways carrying folders and laptops.

Everything appeared normal.

Too normal.

Brian stepped out of the elevator and instinctively looked toward Damien's office.

There he was, smiling laughing with two supervisors as composed as ever.

If Brian hadn't seen him the previous night, he would have believed Damien was just another respected senior manager.

"He's either fearless," Brian thought, "or he has no reason to be afraid."

Damien noticed Brian across the hallway and offered his usual friendly smile.

"Morning, Brian. Ready for another busy day?"

"Always," Brian replied with the same polite smile.

They exchanged nothing more than that.

But Brian couldn't stop wondering how someone could hide so much behind such an ordinary conversation.

Across the building, Layla sat inside her office pretending to review departmental reports.

She wasn't reading a single page.

Instead, her mind replayed every detail from the previous night.

Damien.

Stephen.

The evaluation reports she finally understood why her father always said that corruption rarely announced itself, it blended into routine and looked like paperwork. It sounded like policy and hid inside numbers, a soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in."

Her assistant entered with a folder.

"These are the restructuring planning documents you requested."

Layla accepted the file.

"Thank you."

Once the door closed, she locked it.

If there was an explanation for the altered evaluations, she intended to find it.

Brian spent most of the morning working as though nothing had changed.

Whenever someone spoke to him, he answered naturally.

Whenever Damien walked through the department, Brian never looked at him for more than a second.

The investigation depended on one thing.

No one could know they were suspicious.

By lunchtime, Brian quietly carried several printed evaluation summaries into an unused archive room.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old employee records filled rows of filing cabinets.

It was the one place almost nobody visited anymore.

He spread every document across a large wooden table.

At first, he focused on the numbers.

Eighty-seven.

Ninety-one.

Eighty-four.

Ninety-three.

Some had increased, others had decreased. The changes were tiny, two points, three points, sometimes only one, not enough to attract attention but enough to change rankings. He circled every altered score, then he stopped.

"I'm looking at this the wrong way."

Instead of studying the numbers, he began studying the people.

Departments, managers, employment dates, projects and promotion history, nearly an hour passed and nothing connected.

He leaned back in frustration.

"Come on... there has to be something."

His eyes drifted across one column again.

Department.

He checked another report.

Then another.

His heartbeat slowed.

He reached for more files.

One after another.

Every employee whose evaluation had been adjusted belonged to departments scheduled for leadership restructuring.

No exceptions.

Brian sat perfectly still.

"This isn't random..."

He grabbed a notebook and wrote every department in a single column.

Operations.

Customer Services.

Technology.

Finance.

Sales.

Every one of them had positions that would soon become available under the company's expansion plan.

For the first time...

The numbers made sense.

At nearly the same moment, Layla reached a similar conclusion.

The restructuring documents detailed the company's largest expansion in years.

New regional offices.

Additional business units.

A revised leadership structure.

Several new executive positions.

Department rankings would heavily influence promotions.

She read one sentence twice.

"Employee performance evaluations will serve as a primary factor in executive selection."

Layla slowly lowered the document.

The evaluations weren't simply measuring performance.

They were deciding careers.

A single point could determine who led a department.

Who received a promotion.

Who gained influence.

Who didn't.

She immediately thought of Damien.

"He isn't changing reports..." she whispered.

"He's choosing leaders."

The workday finally ended.

Most employees headed home without noticing Brian quietly leaving through a side exit.

Layla did the same fifteen minutes later.

They met in a small café several blocks from the company, one neither of them had visited before.

Brian placed his notebook on the table.

Layla laid out the restructuring documents beside it.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Instead, they exchanged papers.

Brian read her documents.

Layla studied his notes.

The silence itself told the story.

Finally Brian looked up.

"Every altered evaluation belongs to departments affected by the expansion."

Layla nodded.

"And promotions depend on those evaluations."

Brian leaned forward.

"He's deciding who gets promoted before the process even begins."

"Not only promoted," Layla replied. "Those people will eventually become senior leadership."

Brian stared at the papers spread across the table.

"He's building his own network."

Layla finished the thought.

"A leadership team that owes its success to him."

Neither of them spoke for several moments.

The motive was finally clear.

This had never been about revenge.

Or money or personal disputes.

It was about influence, hidden, patient and calculated.

Damien wasn't trying to control today's company.

He was trying to control tomorrow's.

Brian gathered every suspicious evaluation into one stack.

"There's still one question."

Layla looked at him.

"How were these approved?"

Every altered report required two signatures.

The department manager.

And final authorization.

Stephen Hale's signature appeared on every suspicious evaluation.

That wasn't surprising anymore.

But Brian noticed something else.

A second signature.

Small.

Almost hidden beneath an approval stamp.

He compared another report.

The same signature.

Then another.

Again.

The handwriting matched perfectly.

Brian frowned.

"This isn't Stephen."

Layla took the papers.

Her expression changed.

"You're right."

She searched through several reports again.

The same signature appeared every time.

Not identical in appearance...

But identical in style.

Someone had signed them all.

Brian looked at her.

"Do you recognize it?"

Layla hesitated.

"I think I've seen it before."

"Where?"

She closed the folder.

"At the executive level."

Brian felt his stomach tighten.

"Are you sure?"

"Not yet."

She opened her laptop.

The company maintained digital archives of older board approvals.

Several minutes passed as she searched.

Board resolutions.

Strategic plans.

Expansion proposals.

Executive authorizations.

Finally she stopped scrolling.

A scanned approval page filled the screen.

Near the bottom...

A signature.

Layla silently compared it with the evaluation reports.

Her face slowly lost its color.

Brian didn't need to ask.

He already knew.

"It matches?"

Layla nodded once.

"Yes."

Brian looked at the screen.

"Whose signature is it?"

Layla closed the laptop before answering.

"Not tonight."

Brian looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because if we're right, naming that person changes everything."

"You don't trust anyone anymore?"

Layla gave a faint smile.

"After what we've discovered..."

She looked toward the café window.

"Would you?"

Brian couldn't answer.

Because she was right.

If someone high enough to authorize executive documents was involved...

Then Damien had never been acting alone.

Everything they believed was suddenly too small.

The altered evaluations.

Stephen Hale.

Late-night meetings.

Those were only pieces.

Someone else had been moving the board from the shadows.

Brian slowly gathered every document and placed them back into the folder.

For the first time since this investigation had begun...

He understood the scale of what they were facing.

They weren't trying to expose one dishonest manager.

They were preparing to challenge people powerful enough to shape the future of the entire company.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the café windows as evening settled over the streets.

Layla stood first.

"From this point forward," she said quietly, "we assume every move we make is being watched."

Brian rose beside her.

"Then we stop reacting."

Layla met his eyes.

"And start planning."

Brian nodded.

"If hidden influence built this..."

He looked back at the folder resting on the table.

"Then hidden influence is exactly how we'll bring it down."
