Chapter 20 - Chapter 21: Hidden Patterns

The elevator doors closed with a soft sound behind Damien.

A second later, Brian and Layla exchanged a glance.

Neither spoke.

Neither needed to.

The decision had already been made.

Whatever Damien was doing inside the company at nearly ten o'clock at night, they were going to find out.

The warmth of their earlier conversation still lingered somewhere in the back of their minds, but it had been pushed aside by something stronger. Curiosity. Suspicion. Instinct. For months, both of them had noticed small inconsistencies surrounding Damien. Strange decisions. Convenient outcomes. Quiet shifts in company dynamics that never seemed important enough on their own, yet somehow felt connected when viewed together.

Now, for the first time, they had an opportunity to look closer.

And neither intended to waste it.

The next elevator arrived moments later.

They stepped inside.

The digital display above the door illuminated.

One floor.

Two floors.

Three.

Then stopped.

The same floor Damien had selected.

The doors opened.

Silence greeted them.

Most of the lights were off.

Only emergency lighting and a few isolated fixtures illuminated the hallway ahead, casting long shadows across the polished floor. During the day, this section of the company was constantly filled with movement. Employees carrying files. Managers rushing between meetings. Conversations happening around every corner.

At night it felt like a completely different place.

Almost unfamiliar.

Almost secretive.

Brian stepped out first.

Layla followed.

They moved carefully through the corridor.

Far enough away to avoid being noticed.

Close enough not to lose sight of Damien.

Ahead of them, he continued walking with purpose.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

As though he had made this trip many times before.

That detail immediately caught Brian's attention.

This wasn't someone improvising.

This was someone following a routine.

"Have you ever seen him come here before?" Layla whispered.

Brian shook his head.

"No."

Neither had.

And that alone was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Damien eventually turned a corner and disappeared from view.

Brian and Layla immediately increased their pace.

Careful.

Quiet.

Alert.

When they reached the corner seconds later, they found him standing outside a conference room.

Not one of the executive conference rooms.

Not one used for major board meetings.

A smaller room rarely used after business hours.

Damien checked the hallway.

Then entered.

The door closed behind him.

Layla frowned.

"That's strange."

Brian nodded.

It was.

Because if Damien had wanted privacy, he had access to far more secure locations.

Why choose this room?

Why now?

And why alone?

The answer arrived five minutes later.

A second figure appeared.

A man.

Middle-aged.

Wearing business attire despite the late hour.

Brian immediately recognized him.

Department Manager Stephen Hale.

Not someone particularly important.

Not someone particularly memorable.

One of those managers who existed comfortably in the background of company operations.

The kind most people overlooked.

Stephen glanced around before entering the same room.

The door closed again.

And suddenly neither Brian nor Layla felt comfortable calling this coincidence.

They approached carefully.

Not close enough to risk exposure.

Just close enough to hear.

The thick conference-room door absorbed most of the conversation, leaving only fragments capable of escaping into the hallway.

Fragments.

But sometimes fragments were enough.

"...evaluation reports..."

The voice belonged to Damien.

Muffled.

Distant.

Barely audible.

A second voice answered.

Stephen.

"...those numbers..."

The remainder disappeared.

Several seconds passed.

Then another piece reached them.

"...can't reach the board..."

Brian looked at Layla.

Her expression mirrored his own.

Focused.

Concerned.

Listening.

"I've already handled it."

Damien.

This time clearer.

More confident.

"Good."

Stephen.

The conversation continued beyond the door.

But the words became impossible to distinguish.

Only scattered sounds remained.

Too incomplete to understand.

Too deliberate to ignore.

Neither Brian nor Layla moved.

The silence between them was filled with thought.

Because both had arrived at the same conclusion.

This wasn't normal.

This wasn't a casual discussion between colleagues.

And it definitely wasn't a conversation that should have been happening at ten o'clock at night.

Several minutes later, chairs shifted.

The meeting was ending.

Brian immediately stepped backward.

Layla followed.

Together they retreated around the corner.

Far enough to remain hidden.

Close enough to observe.

The door opened.

Stephen exited first.

He headed toward the elevators without looking back.

Damien remained inside for another minute.

Then emerged.

Calm.

Composed.

Completely unaware he had been watched.

Moments later, he disappeared down the hallway.

The floor fell silent again.

Neither Brian nor Layla moved immediately.

Both waited.

Listening.

Ensuring they were alone.

Only when the elevator doors closed somewhere in the distance did Brian finally speak.

"Let's see what they were discussing."

The conference room was empty.

At first glance, nothing seemed unusual.

The table was clean.

The chairs were arranged neatly.

The display screen was dark.

No obvious evidence remained.

Brian exhaled.

"Either they're careful..."

"...or we're late," Layla finished.

For a moment, disappointment threatened to settle over the room.

Then Layla noticed something.

A single sheet of paper partially hidden beneath the edge of the conference table.

So small.

So ordinary.

So easy to miss.

She bent down and pulled it free.

Immediately, her expression changed.

Brian noticed.

"What is it?"

Layla didn't answer right away.

Her eyes remained fixed on the document.

Reading.

Analyzing.

Comparing.

Remembering.

Slowly, she handed the page to him.

Brian studied it.

The document appeared to be part of an employee performance summary.

Nothing unusual at first glance.

Evaluation scores.

Department rankings.

Quarterly metrics.

The sort of report generated dozens of times throughout the year.

Yet something felt wrong.

Brian looked closer.

Then again.

And suddenly he saw it.

Several scores had been adjusted.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

A rating of eighty-six had become ninety-one.

A seventy-eight had become seventy-four.

Small changes.

Insignificant individually.

Powerful collectively.

"These aren't official numbers."

Layla nodded immediately.

"I know."

Her voice was quiet.

Serious.

Certain.

Brian looked back at the page.

The implications arrived slowly.

Then all at once.

A five-point increase could influence promotions.

A four-point decrease could prevent them.

A small adjustment could change rankings.

Performance reviews.

Career opportunities.

Entire departments.

The room suddenly felt much colder.

Brian studied the document again.

The numbers were different.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Just enough to change promotions.

Just enough to influence department rankings.

Just enough to alter careers.

Slowly, Layla looked up from the page.

Her expression had changed.

The curiosity was gone.

Something else had replaced it.

Something darker.

Something far more dangerous.

"This wasn't an accident."

Brian already knew.

The silence between them confirmed it.

Because accidents happened once.

Mistakes happened twice.

But this...

This looked like a system.

And systems didn't build themselves.
