Chapter 1 - Rainstrum

"My name is Percy.....Percy Hale-Marrin although that would be Professor Percy Hale-Marrin to you but just call me professor Percy, I'll be your new history teacher but I do dabble in other fields but that's a story for another time. Although "history" is a strange word right now as what I'm about to teach you all is still unfolding." The professor says as he turns around to face over a 100 students after writing his name on the black board with a chalk.- "A year ago today there was a meteor shower, some may describe it as beautiful, talk about the way it cracked open the like glass, how the intensity lit up the sky making it almost look like it was mid-day, the trails of blue and silver fire following along. For a moment every sound in rainstrum died, or at least that's what it felt like, No engines, no voices, heck some even argue the wind stopped, but it didn't just bring awe....it marked a new age for rainstrum. The eastern district where the meteor shower was closer too was the first one affected, by morning the hospitals were full, the news was probably having a field day reporting it, Oh but that's not all, I'm sure some of you know about this, don't you have friends who were affected? Or famili-" He was interrupted by a student "yeah everyone knows the story of the meteor shower, I mean you're going in depth a bit but isn't your point going to be how most people started developing powers?"

"I was actually getting to that but essentially yes, the meteor shower changed everything,a woman lifted a bus with one hand, a man vanished from his hospital bed and appeared three streets away. There were no machines, no devices, no explanations, just wonders of the powers born....nay, "awakening " in humans. People with powers? We call them "Awakeners" and by we I mean the media because they originated the name.although I wouldn't necessarily say the powers were a miracle because what happens when a bad person all of a sudden becomes special? They don't suddenly have a change of heart because now they feel invincible, they're different from others, powers to back it up now as-well, the crime rates shot up, some of you have probably seen the report on how a brawl between two awakeners leveled a street, killing seven civilians. I think this was the wake up call the government actually needed because if the awakeners were left unchecked.....we all know what would happen, but if you can't control them? If the rules don't apply to them anymore? What do you do then?"——"create a system for them?" A student answered, Professor Percy nodded slowly. He set the chalk down he had been holding for a while and leaned against the desk. "Yes. That is exactly what the government did," he said. The room was quiet now, Even the students in the back were listening. "Within weeks, new laws were written," Professor Percy continued. "Registration. Monitoring. Rankings, instead of making them look like monsters, they made the ones who signed up into hero's, gave them rankings depending on how effective and useful their powers were..The awakeners were told it was for safety, For balance, For peace.....although some believed that, some didn't." Professor Percy's eyes drifted across the lecture hall, lingering just long enough on certain faces for a few students to shift uncomfortably in their seats. "Those who resisted," he continued, "were labeled dangerous. Uncooperative. Potential threats. After all, if you refuse to register, what are you hiding?"

A hand rose near the middle of the room. "So... are all awakeners ranked now?" Professor Percy let out a breath. "In theory? Yes. In practice?" He tapped the edge of the desk with his finger. "Only the ones the government can find. Or control. Rainstrum is divided, not by fame, not by wealth but by abilities, some people are special but you and I? I mean we're all here because we aren't awakeners, no?" A few students laughed nervously. Others didn't react at all. "Don't think of that as an insult," he said calmly. "It's a classification. One the government finds very useful.....but what happens when the 'less special people' or the 'non-awakeners' want to feel equal, what if they crave the same feeling of being superior also?" Murmurs spread through the hall. whispers could be heard- "I for one think rainstrum is about to be ushered into a new era, whether good or bad, no one can really say" A girl with wide glasses that made her eyes almost look cartoony spoke. Percy nods in approval and as he was about to speak the bell rang which made him conclude the class, "make sure you don't miss out on next week's lesson" the classroom was quiet now, Percy let out a breath and said "how long do you plan on staying in the corridor for" A man wearing a black suit and had the darkest shades on let out a slight chuckle while stepping into the hall. "Sharp as ever Percy....I do need to know though, what did you mean by 'what happens when the less special people want to feel equal?' So far most people seem fine with the new hero system..." Percy, who was fiddling with the chalk on the table looked up and said .. "Nothing, just ramblings of a man." He said, "Just ramblings?" The man replied before continuing let's just hope those 'ramblings' don't put you on 'their' radar. As soon as he heard that, Percy's grip on the chalk tightened which caused it to snap in two. "What do you want? Surely you aren't here to inquire about my thoughts" Percy said, irritated. "Straight to it then...The board wants to see you." The man in black replied.
