Chapter 7 - A-Rank Shadows

The crowd's cheers echoed in Akira's ears as he stepped off the platform, his body still thrumming with the energy of his Sigil. Kenta was escorted out of the arena, his glare promising revenge. Akira couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt, but Rika was already at his side, practically bouncing with excitement.

"You did it! That was amazing!" she said, clapping him on the back.

"Barely," Akira said, wiping sweat from his brow. "That guy was fast."

Rika smirked. "Fast, but sloppy. You played it smart. And that Sigil of yours? It's carrying you straight to the top, Akira. Keep this up, and you'll be knocking on B-rank's door before you know it."

The thought of climbing the ranks so quickly sent a mix of excitement and dread coursing through him. As the next match began, Akira and Rika moved to the sidelines, watching as more students faced off. The duels unfolded in a flurry of light, energy, and raw power, with each fight escalating in intensity.

But as the challenge continued, Akira felt an unsettling presence. At the far edge of the arena, a group of students stood watching the matches, their crimson-and-black blazers pristine and their golden emblems gleaming.

"Who are they?" Akira asked, nodding toward the group.

Rika followed his gaze and frowned. "A-rank students. They don't usually bother with C-rank challenges unless there's something or someone they find interesting."

Akira felt a chill run down his spine as one of the A-rank students, a tall girl with silver hair and piercing amber eyes, locked her gaze on him. Her expression was unreadable, but there was something about her presence that made Akira's flames flicker uneasily.

"She's watching me," Akira muttered.

Rika's expression darkened. "That's Serena. She's one of the council's favorites one of the strongest A-rankers in the school. If she's interested in you, that's both good and bad."

"Why bad?"

"Because A-rank students don't just watch," Rika said, her voice low. "They manipulate, they recruit, and sometimes… they eliminate threats before they become too big to handle."

Akira's chest tightened. He glanced back at Serena, but she had already turned away, her attention now on the match in the arena.

Later that evening, Akira and Rika sat in the C-rank common room, which was a noticeable step up from the dingy D-rank dorms. The furniture was newer, the lighting softer, and the atmosphere less oppressive.

"Alright," Rika said, leaning back on the couch. "You've officially survived your first day as a C-rank. How does it feel?"

"Exhausting," Akira admitted, slumping beside her.

"Get used to it," Rika said with a grin. "The challenges don't stop, and the higher you climb, the harder it gets. Speaking of which…" She leaned forward, her tone turning serious. "We need to talk strategy."

"Strategy?"

"Yeah. You can't just rely on brute force, Akira. That Sigil of yours is powerful, but it's also flashy. People are going to start gunning for you, especially if they think you're a threat to their rank."

Akira nodded, her words resonating deeply. "So what do we do?"

"For starters, you need to learn control," Rika said. "Your flames are wild. They're strong, but they burn through your energy fast. I suggest finding a way to use them more efficiently.

"How do I do that?"

"Practice," Rika said simply. "But not here. We'll find a quiet spot later. For now, focus on staying under the radar."

"Under the radar?" Akira raised an eyebrow. "You do remember the part where my sigil literally lights me on fire, right?"

Rika chuckled. "Fair point. But seriously, Akira, we need to be careful. Chaos Realm High School isn't just a test of strength it's a game of survival. And there are players out there who've been at it a lot longer than us."

Akira sighed, leaning back and staring at the ceiling. "I just want to figure out why I'm here. Why any of us are here."

Rika hesitated, then said quietly, "That's the question everyone's asking. Who are the ones who come up with answers? They don't always survive long enough to share them."

That night, Akira wandered the halls of the school, unable to sleep. His thoughts were a jumbled mess of victories, challenges, and lingering unease about Serena's gaze.

He turned a corner and froze.

Ahead of him, in the shadows of the corridor, two A-rank students stood speaking in hushed tones. One of them was Serena, her silver hair catching the dim light. The other was a tall boy with a jagged scar running down his cheek.

"They're accelerating the schedule," the boy said, his voice barely audible. "The headmaster wants the next phase to begin soon."

"Good," Serena replied, her tone icy. "The longer we wait, the more unpredictable things get. The council's orders are clear we maintain control at all costs."

"What about the new C-ranker?" the boy asked. "The one with the flames?"

Akira's blood ran cold.

"He's irrelevant for now," Serena said. "But keep an eye on him. If he starts stirring up trouble, we'll deal with him."

The boy nodded, and the two A-rankers vanished down the corridor, their conversation lingering in the air like a threat.

Akira leaned against the wall, his heart pounding. What was the council planning? And why did he feel like he had just stepped into a much bigger game than he realized?

One thing was certain: he needed answers.

And if the council thought they could control him, they were in for a surprise.
