Chapter 10 - A Narrow Escape

The wailing alarm reverberated through the vault as Akira and Rika sprinted toward the staircase. The glow of the orbs dimmed, plunging the chamber into a haunting semi-darkness. Above the metallic screech of the alarm, the rhythmic clamor of boots against stone grew louder.

"They're coming from above!" Rika hissed, glancing over her shoulder.

Akira's flames flared instinctively, casting a flickering light down the narrow path. "We can't fight them here. We need another way out!"

Rika's eyes darted around the chamber, scanning the walls and shelves. "This place is too big. There's got to be an emergency exit!"

A shout echoed from the staircase, followed by the telltale hum of Sigils activating. Akira didn't wait to see who was coming. "This way!" he said, darting down a side aisle lined with rows of glowing orbs.

The whispers from the orbs grew louder as the pair passed them, forming disjointed phrases that clung to the edges of Akira's thoughts.

"The barrier weakens… balance cannot hold…"

"…they will break through…"

He shook his head, focusing on the task at hand. "Rika, can you sense anything? Another door, a vent, anything?"

Rika closed her eyes briefly, her Sigil flaring as a translucent barrier shimmered around her. "There!" she said, pointing toward the far corner of the chamber, where a faint outline of a door was visible in the gloom.

They sprinted toward it, but before they could reach the exit, a blast of energy tore through the air, slamming into the ground in front of them. Akira skidded to a stop as dust and debris rained down, his flames roaring to life around his fists.

From the shadows stepped two figures, their crimson-and-black blazers unmistakable.

"You've got guts coming down here," one of them said, a tall boy with spiked hair and a glowing red Sigil etched on his chest. He flexed his fingers, and a crimson chain materialized, its links pulsating with energy. "Too bad guts won't save you."

Beside him stood a girl with short-cropped hair, her golden eyes cold and calculating. Her Sigil formed a shimmering orb of light that hovered in her palm, crackling with raw power.

"Give us one reason not to drag you straight to the council," she said, her tone icy.

Akira clenched his fists. "We don't have time for this!" he growled, flames bursting around him.

"Akira, no!" Rika warned.

But the boy with the chain was faster, snapping it toward Akira with a flick of his wrist. Akira barely dodged, the chain striking the ground with enough force to leave a smoldering scar in the stone.

Rika leapt in front of him, her barrier Sigil springing to life just as the girl's orb of light shot forward. The orb collided with the barrier, sending a ripple of energy across its surface.

"Go!" Rika shouted over her shoulder. "Find the exit! I'll hold them off!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Akira shouted back, flames surging around him as he prepared to attack.

Rika turned to glare at him, her barrier flickering under the strain of another assault. "Akira, you can't fight both of them! If you go down, this whole thing was for nothing!"

Her words stung, but she was right. Gritting his teeth, Akira turned and ran toward the door.

"Not so fast!" the chain-wielder snarled, swinging his weapon toward Akira's retreating form.

Akira spun, raising his flaming blade just in time to deflect the chain. The force of the impact sent him stumbling backward, but he stayed on his feet, his flames burning brighter.

"Rika, I'll distract them! Go for the door!" Akira yelled.

For a moment, Rika hesitated, then nodded. "Be careful!"

She darted toward the exit, her barrier shimmering as it deflected another blast from the girl's orb. Akira lunged at the boy with the chain, his blade slicing through the air. The boy blocked with his weapon, the clash sending sparks flying.

"You're persistent, I'll give you that," the boy said, his lips curling into a sneer. "But persistence won't save you from this."

The chain wrapped around Akira's blade, and the boy yanked hard, pulling Akira off balance. Before he could recover, the girl's orb of light slammed into his side, sending him sprawling to the ground.

"Akira!" Rika shouted from the doorway.

Akira struggled to his feet, his flames flickering weakly. The two A-rankers advanced, their Sigils glowing ominously.

"Any last words, rookie?" the boy asked, his chain snapping threateningly.

Akira's mind raced. He couldn't overpower them—not like this. But maybe…

His flames flared, not around his blade but at his feet, sending a burst of heat and light upward. The sudden flash blinded his attackers, and Akira used the distraction to sprint toward the door.

"Now, Rika!" he shouted.

Rika slammed her hand against the door's control panel, and it slid open with a hiss. Akira dove through the opening just as the A-rankers regained their vision.

"You're not getting away!" the girl snarled, her orb glowing dangerously bright.

But before she could attack, Rika hit another switch, and the door slammed shut with a deafening clang.

The two of them collapsed on the other side, gasping for breath. The corridor they'd entered was narrow and dimly lit, the air stale and heavy.

"That… was way too close," Rika panted, clutching her knees.

Akira nodded, his flames flickering out as exhaustion set in. "Thanks for having my back."

Rika smirked weakly. "Always."

They sat in silence for a moment, catching their breath. Then Rika looked at him, her expression serious. "What we saw back there—the memories, the council's plans—we can't keep this to ourselves. People need to know the truth."

Akira nodded. "Agreed. But first, we need to get stronger. If we're going to take on the council, we need to be ready for whatever they throw at us."

Rika stood, offering him a hand. "Then let's get to work."

As they walked down the corridor, the weight of what they had uncovered pressed heavily on their shoulders. The council's secrets were darker than they'd imagined, and the stakes were higher than ever.

But for the first time, Akira felt like they had a chance—a slim, dangerous chance—to change everything.
