Thinking about the goldfish again, Adrian's face suddenly flashed through her mind. She realized that after that night two days ago, she hadn't seen or heard from him at all, which felt strangely unusual now.
"Why are you grinning like someone who stole a cookie and got away with it?" Grandpa suddenly asked, pulling her out of her thoughts.
That was when Elara realized she had been smiling. "It's nothing," she scoffed.
But Grandpa continued staring at her face for a few seconds before looking away and chuckling quietly for whatever reason was running through his mind.
Time passed slowly after that. Before they realized it, night had already fallen outside. Elara had stepped out earlier for a while, but she eventually returned and settled back into the chair in front of the locker.
Zia was already fast asleep next to Grandpa, one arm wrapped tightly around his as if she was afraid he might disappear if she let go.
