Chapter 15 - hero Jeremy

The house where Pearl was hiding had that ancient silence — old wood, heavy curtains, the smell of tea that never cooled.

Jeremy was nervous.

Not because of the danger.

But because he was officially going to meet his vampire girlfriend's mother.

Nothing in his life had prepared him for this.

Anna paced back and forth.

— She's going to like you… probably… I mean… you're alive, that already helps — she spoke too fast.

Pearl watched from the armchair like an empress evaluating a subject.

Elegant. Motionless. Millennia in her eyes.

— So you are the Gilbert boy — she said. Jeremy saw Anna's mother, Asian like Anna, looking to be in her early thirties and just as beautiful as his girlfriend.

Jeremy swallowed hard.

— I… am.

— Human.

— As far as I know.

Anna rolled her eyes.

— Mom…

Pearl stood, walking around him as if reading every layer of his soul.

— Fragile. Mortal. Loud heart.

Jeremy tried to hold his posture.

— I make Anna happy.

That made Pearl stop.

Before she could answer—

TICK.

The watch in Jeremy's pocket opened by itself.

The metallic sound echoed through the room like an execution bell.

Anna reacted first.

Her eyes widened.

Pearl turned at the same instant.

The hand spun.

Pointed.

The object vibrated as if it were alive.

Jeremy only realized when the two of them—

dropped.

Dry.

Without a sound.

Like dolls with their strings cut.

— ANNA?!

He dropped to his knees beside her, shaking her body.

Nothing.

— Pearl?!

Silence.

A step behind him.

Slow.

Certain.

— Finally — John Gilbert's voice came from the doorway — I found you.

Jeremy turned.

The stake was already in his uncle's hand.

Cold eyes.

Conviction.

— You don't understand, boy… this is for the good of the town.

Something inside Jeremy broke.

It wasn't courage.

It wasn't heroism.

It was instinct.

He stood up slowly.

— You… did this to them?

— They are monsters.

John moved forward.

Jeremy did too.

The first thrust came straight for his chest.

Jeremy dodged on pure reflex — the stake tore through his sleeve.

He grabbed John's arm and slammed him against the wall.

The impact knocked the frames down.

John was stronger.

More experienced.

But Jeremy had something John didn't:

rage.

The punch he threw split his uncle's lip.

John answered with a knee to the stomach.

The air vanished.

Jeremy fell sideways.

John raised the stake.

— It's for your own good.

Jeremy saw the reflection of a weapon on the floor.

The wooden crossbow Anna had hidden.

He rolled at the last second.

The stake pierced the floor.

Jeremy kicked John's knee.

The crack echoed.

John fell to the side.

Jeremy grabbed the crossbow and fired.

The bolt grazed John's shoulder.

John screamed.

Came forward anyway.

The two of them crashed into the table.

Wood flew.

John landed a punch that made Jeremy's vision go dark for a second.

Blood in his mouth.

Ringing in his ears.

John pulled another stake.

Raised it.

Jeremy caught his wrist with both hands.

The wood stopped inches from his chest.

Both of them shaking.

Strength against strength.

— YOU ARE NOT TOUCHING THEM — Jeremy growled.

He smashed his head into John's.

Once.

Twice.

John staggered.

Jeremy twisted his body and—

BAM

His forehead slammed into his uncle's face.

John dropped unconscious.

Silence.

Heavy.

Jeremy let go of the stake.

Turned, running.

— Anna… Anna wake up…

Nothing.

Then the watch closed.

The hand stopped.

Both of them gasped for air at the same time.

Anna sat up, startled.

Pearl rose with her eyes blazing—

until she saw John on the floor.

And Jeremy.

Bleeding.

Panting.

Standing in front of them.

Protecting.

Anna reached him first.

Her cold hands on his face.

— You… fought him?

Jeremy shrugged, dizzy.

— He was going to kill you.

Pearl approached slowly.

Her expression was no longer judgment.

It was something else.

Something ancient.

Respect.

— A human… facing an armed hunter… for us.

Jeremy wiped the blood from his mouth.

— Anna's family.

Soon… mine too.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Anna rested her forehead against his.

Pearl placed a hand on his shoulder.

And something dangerous was born there.

It wasn't just gratitude.

It wasn't just attraction.

It was a bond.

The kind of bond vampires take centuries to offer.

Jeremy Gilbert — human, uneven heartbeat, trembling hands—

had just become a special kind of hero to Pearl and had elevated the level of love Anna felt for him.

And Pearl said, in a low, solemn voice:

— Thank you.

But inside that house—

for the first time—

mother and daughter were looking at the same man

with the same feeling.

And Jeremy still hadn't realized that that fight

had changed his place in the supernatural world

forever.
