Some connections don't arrive loudly.
They grow slowly, in small and quiet ways.
Anna began to notice that Sid had become part of her routine. Not in an obvious way, but in moments she didn't plan. He was there during lunch breaks, sitting across from her or nearby. Sometimes they spoke. Sometimes they didn't. And somehow, that felt comfortable.
She wasn't used to that.
Anna usually liked noise and movement. Silence often made her restless. But with Sid, the quiet felt different. It didn't demand anything from her. She could sketch while he read, and neither of them felt ignored.
One afternoon, Anna was working on a design that just wasn't coming together. She erased lines again and again, frustration clear on her face.
"Something wrong?" Sid asked gently.
She sighed. "Yeah. It looks perfect in my head, but I can't get it right on paper."
Sid looked at her sketch, careful not to touch it. "Maybe you're trying too hard to make it perfect."
She glanced at him. "That's usually the problem."
He smiled. "Maybe let it be messy first. Things make more sense later."
Anna paused. No one had ever spoken about her work like that before. Most people either praised it or criticized it. Sid simply understood the process.
"I like the way you think," she said without thinking.
Sid looked surprised. "I was just being honest."
"That's rare," she replied.
They shared a small smile, one that lingered a little longer than necessary.
As days passed, their conversations became easier. They spoke about simple things. Classes. Stress. Random thoughts. Sid talked about stories he loved, but he never tried to force Anna to read. Anna talked about designs she dreamed of creating one day, and Sid listened like those dreams mattered.
That meant more to her than she wanted to admit.
One evening, they stayed back after class, sitting on the campus steps. The sky was turning orange, and the air felt calm.
"Do you ever feel like you're supposed to be more than what people expect?" Anna asked suddenly.
Sid thought for a moment. "All the time. But I think becoming yourself takes time."
She nodded. "I hope so."
They sat there in silence, watching the day end. It wasn't awkward. It wasn't empty. It felt full in a way Anna couldn't explain.
Sid glanced at her once, then looked away. He liked these moments. He liked how she spoke freely, how her thoughts flowed without fear. He didn't say it, but he felt something growing. Something he wasn't ready to name.
Anna felt it too. A strange warmth. A sense of calm she didn't feel around many people.
Still, neither of them crossed that invisible line.
Because comfort was precious.
And neither of them wanted to break it too soon.
As they walked away that evening, Anna realized something had changed. Sid wasn't just someone she met by chance anymore. He had become someone she looked for without realizing it.
And Sid knew that Anna wasn't just a passing presence in his life.
They were standing on the edge of something new.
They just didn't know it yet.
