They waited outside the emergency treatment area while the doctors worked, and the minutes passed slowly enough that Victor had taken to pacing the length of the corridor, where the air smelled of antiseptic. When a doctor finally came toward them, the gravity in his face stopped Victor where he stood.
"Which of you is the family representative?"
Thomas stepped forward. "I am. What happened to them?"
