Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Art of the Calculated Rogue

Chapter 32: The Art of the Calculated Rogue

"You won…"

On the scorched floor of the ring, Namikaze Minato repeated the words, his expression a complex mix of exhaustion and wry acceptance.

The audience remained in a state of suspended animation, minds still replaying the impossible image of Shinra's dual-fisted shattering of the elemental apocalypse. The match had ended, but the shock was a lingering ghost.

"Match… concluded! Winner… Shinra!"

The chief examiner, a seasoned jounin, recovered first. After a final, confirming glance at Minato, he boomed the official result.

The dam broke.

The arena, which had been holding its breath, erupted into a deafening roar.

"In… incredible!!"

"Namikaze Minato… actually conceded?!"

"By the Sage! That Kekkei Genkai is just too overpowered!"

"What a terrifying prodigy! No… 'prodigy' doesn't even cover it. He's a freak of nature! A once-in-a-century monster!"

All eyes were on Shinra, burning with a mixture of awe, fear, and intense curiosity.

"WOW! SHINRA-KUN! SO COOL! THE COOLEST!!"

"SHINRA-SAMA! MARRY ME! LET'S HAVE A DOZEN BABIES!!!"

His fan club reached a new peak of hysterical devotion.

In the VIP seats, the power brokers were having their own quiet upheaval.

"This boy's ability…" Hiruzen Sarutobi muttered, his eyes wide behind the smoke of his pipe, fixed unblinkingly on Shinra.

Danzo's gaze was equally intense, but colder, more calculating. Shadows danced in his deep-set eyes. "An immensely powerful Kekkei Genkai. Such domineering force. Don't worry. I will mold him into Konoha's ultimate trump card in the shortest time. He will be perfect for the coming war…"

A rare, excited smile touched Danzo's lips. He saw a weapon of unparalleled sharpness.

Then, Hiruzen's voice, calm and utterly casual, cut through his planning.

"Who said Shinra was being assigned to you?"

Danzo's head snapped around. "What do you mean? You implied it earlier!"

Hiruzen puffed his pipe, the picture of relaxed confusion. "Did I? Ah, you must be misremembering. My old mind isn't what it used to be…"

"You—!" Danzo's anger flared. He glared at the Hokage, but Hiruzen merely offered a bland, unreadable smile, the very image of a harmless old man who'd simply forgotten.

Danzo seethed. It's not the cultured rogue you fear; it's the rogue who has mastered culture. This man, the Hokage, was playing the fool, and there was nothing Danzo could do about it publicly.

"Fine!" Danzo spat through gritted teeth, forced to retreat. "You keep the brat. Hand Namikaze Minato over to me, then. That should be acceptable."

"Hm?" Hiruzen tilted his head, feigning deep thought. "No, no. Minato has the makings of a Hokage. He cannot be cultivated as a mere killer. He, too, should remain under my personal guidance."

"YOU!! Sarutobi Hiruzen! You—!"

Danzo's face purpled with rage. He was being played, blatantly and without shame.

"Ah, look at the time! The award ceremony is about to start. I must go preside." Hiruzen cut off Danzo's sputtering, finding a convenient excuse. Without further ceremony, he performed a swift Body Flicker, vanishing from the platform before Danzo could utter another word.

Left alone, Danzo stood trembling, his face a mask of apoplectic fury. "You scheming, shameless, two-faced old bastard! Rogue! Brigand!!"

He cursed the empty air where Hiruzen had stood, then spun on his heel and stormed away. What could he do? The man was the Hokage. He had the authority, and he had just demonstrated a complete lack of shame in wielding it. Danzo had no choice but to swallow the bitter pill.

Watching Danzo's furious departure from the shadows nearby, a smug, satisfied smile finally broke through Hiruzen's carefully crafted placidity. He felt rather pleased with himself.

However, the smile was brief. His eyes, old and deep as a still lake, remained unfathomable.

The truth was, Hiruzen had miscalculated.

As Hokage, he naturally thought in layers. He had initially overestimated Shinra's potential, yet still ultimately underestimated the sheer, raw, monstrous power the boy possessed. Shinra's victory over Minato wasn't just a win; it was a paradigm shift.

His original plan had been elegant: give the wildcard, Shinra, to Danzo to be honed into Konoha's shadowy dagger. Cultivate the brilliant, stable Minato in the light as the future Hokage. A perfect balance of light and dark to secure the village's future.

But Shinra's power had escalated beyond a mere "wildcard." He wasn't just strong; he was an uncontrollable variable of terrifying magnitude. And with Minato unable to clearly surpass or counterbalance him…

Handing a Chief Student of such power and clear, fierce independence to a man like Danzo? A man of boundless ambition and ruthless methods? It was unthinkable. Letting Shinra grow under Danzo's influence wouldn't create a weapon for Konoha; it would forge a catastrophe that could endanger the village itself, perhaps even the entire shinobi world.

Danzo could rage all he wanted. Hiruzen would weather the storm.

His gaze returned to the arena floor, to Shinra's back as the boy stood amidst the cheers. The smoke from his pipe curled steadily upwards, but Hiruzen's brow was furrowed, his expression grave. The calculus of power in his village had just been violently rewritten, and the future was now a much more complex, and dangerous, equation.
