Chapter 28: The Stage is Set
Seeing Shinra walking towards her, completely unharmed, Kushina's composure shattered. With a choked sob, she threw herself directly into his arms.
The moment he'd been engulfed by the fireball, her world had gone white, a cold void of terror that left her trembling uncontrollably. Only now, feeling the solid, living reality of him, did this stubborn, loud-mouthed girl realize just how deeply and unconsciously she'd come to rely on the boy in front of her.
The soft, clean scent of her hair filled his senses, and the warmth of her pressed against him sent a faint, pleasant ripple through his core.
"Stupid Shinra! Idiot Shinra! Why were you so reckless?! That was a C-rank technique! You could have… you could have…" Her voice was muffled against his chest, a mix of anger and lingering fear as she pounded her small fists against him.
His heart softened. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, and gently stroked her bright red hair. "Shhh, it's okay. I'm fine. I won. And I got Mikoto's payback. It's all good."
At his words, Kushina seemed to come back to herself. She let out a little hmph and wriggled out of his embrace.
And then it hit her.
What she had just done. In front of everyone.
A crimson blush exploded across her face, from her neck to the tips of her ears. She looked utterly flustered and devastatingly cute.
"Hmph! It's all your fault, you idiot! I'm ignoring you!" Unable to bear the curious and knowing looks from the surrounding crowd, she transferred all her embarrassment into a glare at Shinra. With her face still burning, she turned and practically fled the contestant area.
Leaving Shinra standing alone to bear the weight of the world's pointing fingers and whispers, a wry smile on his face.
But remembering the feeling of her in his arms… yeah. It was worth it.
From the VIP stands, the interaction did not go unnoticed. Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression grew thoughtful. Danzo's, however, darkened.
"This Shinra… he is from an outer village, after all. His closeness to the Jinchuriki is… concerning," Danzo murmured, his voice low and grave.
Hiruzen puffed on his pipe, considering. "He is an orphan. His village is gone. Konoha is his home now. There should be no issue."
"But his loyalty—"
"Enough," Hiruzen cut him off, his tone firm but calm. "He is a child. What trouble could one child possibly stir up within Konoha's walls?"
Danzo fell silent, but his frown deepened. As his gaze returned to the arena floor, Hiruzen added, almost as an afterthought, his eyes still on the field below:
"Though… a mindset like his… he would be well-suited for the Anbu."
The words were spoken softly, casually. By the time Danzo glanced at him, Hiruzen was once again the picture of an attentive Hokage, watching the next match begin. But the seed had been planted. Danzo's eyes sharpened as they fixed back on Shinra, reassessing him with a new, calculating intensity.
Soon, the second semi-final began.
Namikaze Minato versus Uzumaki Kushina.
The destined lovers of another story were now mere opponents on a tournament stage.
Watching from the sidelines, Shinra felt a strange, flickering sense of… guilt? Or was it just smug satisfaction? (Definitely the latter.)
The match was announced, and the two clashed—a fierce, brilliant display. Minato's ninjutsu control was already exceptional, his tactical mind operating on a level far beyond his peers. He, too, unleashed a C-rank technique, his chakra reserves seemingly bottomless for a boy his age. He fought with the calm precision of a seasoned chunin. Among their generation, he was a true prodigy.
Yet, for all its technical brilliance, the match failed to fully capture the audience's imagination. Most were still buzzing, whispering fervently about Shinra. Even Hiruzen Sarutobi, who had always held Minato in the highest esteem, found his attention drifting, his mind replaying the image of Shinra standing unharmed amidst the torn-apart flames.
Minato himself seemed to sense the distracted atmosphere. A wry, almost resigned smile touched his lips. He pressed his advantage, bringing the match to a swift, clean conclusion. Kushina was strong, fierce, and relentless, but against Minato's fluid, overwhelming skill, she was ultimately outmatched.
"Namikaze Minato is the winner!"
The chief examiner's voice cut through the lingering chatter. Then, it rose again, charged with anticipation.
"The final match of the tournament will now commence!"
"Shinra… versus Namikaze Minato!"
"Contestants, you have ten minutes to prepare. The final will be held in the central ring!"
His words were a spark to tinder. The arena, which had been murmuring with the aftershocks of Shinra's last fight, erupted into a fresh wave of roaring anticipation.
This was it. The clash everyone had been waiting for.
Namikaze Minato, the acknowledged, undisputed genius, the calm and brilliant future everyone saw.
Versus Shinra, the dark horse, the terrifying force of nature who broke rules and expectations with his fists.
The battle for the title of Chief Student—and for the soul of Konoha's next generation—was about to begin.
