Chapter 95 - The Other Heirs

I stared at the woman standing beyond the First Door.

My face.

My eyes.

My hair.

Even the small scar near my eyebrow was there.

But there was something different about her.

She looked older.

Not by years.

By centuries.

Behind her stood thousands of people.

Every one of them carried the same golden mark.

Every one of them looked at me as if they had been waiting for this exact moment.

Lena whispered behind me.

"Ariana…"

"I know."

The woman smiled.

"You're afraid."

I took a step forward.

"No."

She tilted her head.

"Then why are you shaking?"

I looked down.

My hands were trembling.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

Something inside me knew her.

Something older than memory.

"Who are you?"

The woman stepped closer.

"I am you."

"That isn't an answer."

"It is the only answer that matters."

Rowan moved beside me.

"Stay back."

The woman looked at him.

"Keeper."

Her voice became colder.

"You still think you can protect her."

Rowan raised his hand.

Blue light formed around his fingers.

The woman laughed.

"You haven't learned."

"Neither have you."

She looked at me again.

"Do you know how many times humanity has reached this point?"

I frowned.

"What point?"

"The awakening."

She spread her arms.

"How many times do you think the Source has chosen an Heir?"

I didn't answer.

"Once?"

She smiled.

"Hundreds."

The chamber went silent.

I stared at her.

"Hundreds?"

"Yes."

She pointed toward the people behind her.

"Every one of them was an Heir."

I looked at the thousands of faces.

Some looked like me.

Some were male.

Some were old.

Some were young.

But all carried the same golden mark.

"What happened to them?"

"They failed."

The word chilled me.

"How?"

"They chose."

I frowned.

"Everyone chooses."

"Exactly."

She walked past me.

"The Source gives every Heir the same choice."

"What choice?"

"To become the Source…"

She turned.

"…or destroy it."

I felt my chest tighten.

"And what did they choose?"

"Some became vessels."

"Others?"

"Some destroyed themselves."

She paused.

"And some tried to control it."

I thought of the Architects.

"The Architects."

"Not all of them."

She looked toward the thousands behind her.

"Some became rulers. Some became protectors. Some became monsters."

"And you?"

Her expression changed.

"I refused."

"Refused what?"

"To choose."

I stared at her.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does when you understand the trap."

She stepped closer.

"The Source wants an answer."

"And?"

"And every answer creates another version of reality."

My mind raced.

"What do you mean?"

She raised her hand.

The chamber changed.

Images appeared around us.

I saw different versions of the world.

In one, the First Civilization survived.

In another, the Architects ruled everything.

In another, the Source had disappeared.

In another, humanity lived underground.

In another, the earth was completely covered in golden light.

Then I saw myself.

Different versions of me.

One was a queen.

One was a prisoner.

One stood beside the First Hunger.

One was fighting the Architects.

One was lying dead beneath the Memory Tree.

One was alone.

One was smiling.

One was crying.

One looked exactly like the woman before me.

I stepped backward.

"How?"

"Choices."

She lowered her hand.

"Every time an Heir chooses, the Source creates another possibility."

I stared at her.

"So you're saying…"

"You are not the first Ariana."

My heart stopped.

"And you aren't the first version of me."

"No."

She smiled.

"But you may be the first one who can break the cycle."

I looked toward Rowan.

He was staring at the woman with a strange expression.

"You knew."

He hesitated.

"I knew there were other Heirs."

"But you didn't tell me."

"I didn't know you would meet them."

The woman laughed.

"Of course he didn't."

She looked at Rowan.

"He was programmed not to."

Rowan's expression hardened.

"I wasn't programmed."

"You were."

She stepped closer.

"The Architects altered your memories too."

Rowan went still.

I turned toward him.

"Is that true?"

He didn't answer.

"Rowan."

His eyes lowered.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"What did they do?"

"They made me forget certain things."

"Like what?"

"My connection to you."

I stared at him.

"So when you found me…"

"I didn't remember that you were my sister."

My heart broke.

"How did you know later?"

"The Keeper's memory returned."

"When?"

"When you awakened the Source."

I looked at the woman.

"Why are you showing me all this?"

"Because you need to understand what you're about to become."

"What am I about to become?"

She pointed toward the Source.

The golden light inside my body suddenly pulsed.

"The final Heir."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"There will be no Heir after you."

Silence.

"Why?"

"Because the cycle is ending."

I looked at the thousands of people.

"Are they real?"

"Yes."

"Where have they been?"

"Waiting."

"For me?"

"For the final choice."

The First Hunger's voice suddenly echoed through the chamber.

"She is lying."

Everyone froze.

The woman turned.

The golden mark on her forehead flickered.

The floor beneath us cracked.

A black hand emerged.

Then another.

The First Hunger climbed through the broken ground.

But he looked different.

His golden markings were burning.

His eyes were brighter.

He looked directly at the woman.

"You were never an Heir."

Her expression hardened.

"You know nothing."

"I remember you."

She stepped backward.

The First Hunger smiled.

"You were there when the first blood was spilled."

The woman's face changed.

I looked at her.

"What is he talking about?"

She didn't answer.

The First Hunger turned toward me.

"She isn't another version of you."

"Then who is she?"

He stared at her.

"She is the first lie."

The chamber shook.

The woman's smile disappeared.

"You always were difficult to control."

"And you always were afraid of the truth."

She raised her hand.

The thousands behind her moved simultaneously.

The First Generation raised their weapons.

Adrian shouted from behind us.

"Everyone, get back!"

The woman pointed at me.

"Take her."

The crowd rushed forward.

Lena grabbed my hand.

"Run!"

We turned.

But the chamber doors slammed shut.

There was nowhere to go.

The thousands surrounded us.

I felt the Source inside me awaken.

The woman watched.

"Choose."

I looked at her.

"You keep saying that."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you have to."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You want me to choose."

Her expression changed.

"That isn't the same thing."

I looked around.

The First Generation.

The Architects.

The Continuum.

My mother.

Elara.

Rowan.

Lena.

The First Hunger.

All of them were watching me.

Waiting.

I finally understood.

The Source wasn't forcing me to choose between becoming powerful or destroying it.

The real choice was whether I would accept the rules everyone else had created for me.

I looked at the woman.

"You said every Heir failed because they chose."

"Yes."

"Then I won't."

She frowned.

"What?"

"I won't choose between the options you give me."

The Source inside me exploded.

Golden light filled the chamber.

The woman screamed.

The thousands behind her fell to their knees.

The First Hunger looked at me in shock.

Rowan shielded his face.

Lena grabbed my arm.

The golden light reached every corner of the chamber.

And then something impossible happened.

The First Door began closing.

The woman screamed.

"No!"

I stared at her.

"You wanted me to choose."

The door continued closing.

"But you forgot something."

She looked at me.

"What?"

I smiled.

"I choose my own choices."

The door slammed shut.

The woman disappeared.

So did the thousands behind her.

Silence returned.

I looked at my hands.

The golden light was gone.

For the first time since the awakening began, I felt completely empty.

Then the Source spoke.

Not loudly.

Not angrily.

Almost gently.

"Good."

I froze.

"What?"

The voice continued.

"Now you are ready."

A second door appeared behind me.

Not beneath the sanctuary.

Not inside the First Door.

It appeared in the air.

Black.

Ancient.

Covered in symbols I had never seen.

And from behind it came a sound.

A baby's cry.

My mother screamed.

"No!"

I turned toward her.

She was staring at the door in horror.

"What is it?"

She shook her head.

"That door should never exist."

The crying came again.

Closer.

Louder.

Then a child's voice whispered from behind the door.

"Ariana…"

I stopped breathing.

"I've been waiting for you."

The door began to open.
