Chapter 94 - The Replacement

The chamber exploded with light.

I couldn't see anything.

I couldn't hear Lena.

I couldn't hear Rowan.

I couldn't hear the voice that had just called me its daughter.

There was only light.

Then darkness.

I opened my eyes.

I was standing somewhere else.

Not the chamber.

Not the sanctuary.

A city stretched before me.

It was enormous.

Towers of silver and gold reached into the sky. Rivers of light flowed between buildings. People moved through the streets, their bodies carrying faint golden marks.

The First Civilization.

But this wasn't the city I had seen before.

This was the city at its height.

Before the collapse.

Before the Council.

Before the Design.

I turned.

Someone stood behind me.

The first Heir.

She looked at me sadly.

"You heard him."

I swallowed.

"He said I was created to replace the Source."

She nodded.

"That's what they wanted."

"Who?"

"The Council."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because the Source could never be controlled."

She began walking.

I followed.

"They tried to contain it. They tried to divide it. They tried to turn it into a system."

"The Design."

"Yes."

We passed through the ancient city.

I saw people gathering around a massive structure at its center.

The Source.

It wasn't a machine.

It was a living sphere of golden light suspended above the ground.

Thousands of people stood around it.

They weren't worshipping it.

They were connected to it.

I could feel their emotions.

Their memories.

Their hopes.

Their fears.

"What happened?"

The first Heir looked toward the sphere.

"They became dependent on it."

"For power?"

"For everything."

She stopped.

"Memory. Healing. Knowledge. Communication. Even emotion."

I stared at the people.

"They stopped living without it."

"Yes."

"Then the Council wanted to destroy it."

"No."

She shook her head.

"They wanted to replace it."

"With me?"

"With someone like you."

I frowned.

"Someone like me?"

"The Source required a living consciousness capable of carrying its complete memory without being consumed by it."

She touched my shoulder.

"You were the first person born capable of doing that."

"Why me?"

"Your bloodline."

She looked toward the Source.

"It began with us."

I remembered the First Hunger.

The first Heir.

The ancient people.

The Source.

Everything was connected.

"But if I was supposed to replace the Source, why did you stop them?"

"Because replacing the Source would have destroyed it."

She looked directly into my eyes.

"And eventually, it would have destroyed you."

The vision changed.

I saw a laboratory.

The Council stood around a young woman.

Me.

Not me as I was now.

A child.

My mother was standing nearby.

She was younger.

Terrified.

The first Architect stood beside her.

He looked exactly as he did now.

He was holding a device.

"The child is compatible," he said.

My mother shook her head.

"She is a person."

"She is the solution."

"She is my daughter."

The Architect looked at her coldly.

"Then sacrifice yourself for her."

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

The vision shifted again.

I saw her running.

Carrying me.

She entered a dark corridor.

Behind her, alarms screamed.

She handed me to Elara.

"Take her."

Elara cried.

"What about you?"

"I'll slow them down."

My mother kissed my forehead.

"Don't let them make her forget who she is."

Then she turned.

The memory ended.

I couldn't breathe.

"She saved me."

The first Heir nodded.

"She did."

"But she said my memories were erased."

"They were."

"By the Council?"

"No."

I looked at her.

"Then who?"

She pointed toward the golden sphere.

"The Source."

I froze.

"The Source erased my memories?"

"To protect you."

"From what?"

"From the knowledge of what you were capable of."

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It will."

The city began shaking.

Buildings cracked.

The sky turned black.

The First Civilization was collapsing.

I watched people run.

The Source began screaming.

The first Architect appeared beside the sphere.

He raised his hands.

The Design activated.

Golden energy was pulled from the Source.

The sphere began shrinking.

"No!"

The first Heir ran toward him.

He turned.

"You failed."

She looked at him.

"You're killing them."

"I'm saving them."

"You're destroying everything."

"Humanity needs a controlled Source."

She shook her head.

"Humanity needs freedom."

He smiled.

"Freedom is why civilizations fall."

The Design activated again.

The Source shattered.

Golden fragments flew across the sky.

One came toward me.

I reached for it.

The moment it touched my hand, pain tore through my body.

I screamed.

Then I heard another voice.

My own.

But older.

"Run."

The vision disappeared.

I opened my eyes.

I was back in the chamber.

Lena was kneeling beside me.

"Ariana!"

I gasped.

She grabbed my hand.

"Stay with me."

I looked around.

The chamber had changed.

The First Door was completely open.

Rowan stood between me and the stranger.

Blue energy surrounded him.

The stranger was smiling.

"You remember now."

I slowly stood.

"You were there."

The stranger nodded.

"I was."

"You helped create the Design."

"Yes."

"You tried to replace the Source."

"Yes."

"You created me."

He smiled.

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"You're lying."

His expression changed slightly.

"You know I'm not."

Rowan stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

The stranger looked at Rowan.

"You always were sentimental."

Rowan's blue energy intensified.

"You took everything from us."

"I gave you purpose."

"You took my childhood."

"I gave you survival."

"You erased my sister."

The stranger's eyes moved toward me.

"I erased her memories."

My hands clenched.

"Why?"

"Because you were becoming aware."

"Of what?"

"Of yourself."

I stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

"You were remembering the Source before you were old enough to understand it."

He smiled.

"You were five years old when you first touched it."

I remembered.

A flash of golden light.

My mother screaming.

Elara holding me.

The mountain.

The hidden chamber.

"I almost destroyed the sanctuary," I whispered.

"No."

He shook his head.

"You almost awakened it."

The stranger walked closer.

"That was why your memories had to be hidden."

"By the Source?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you want me?"

"Because the Source could not remain without a vessel."

He looked at me.

"And you were the only one capable of becoming one."

Rowan shouted.

"Don't believe him!"

The stranger turned.

"You know it's true."

Blue light collided with golden light.

The chamber shook.

Rowan was thrown backward.

"Rowan!"

I ran toward him.

He pushed himself up.

"I'm fine."

The stranger laughed.

"You've always been weak."

Rowan looked at him.

"No."

His eyes burned brighter.

"I've been waiting."

The blue energy around him changed.

It became almost white.

The stranger's smile disappeared.

"You shouldn't have awakened."

Rowan stood.

"I wasn't the only one you underestimated."

The stranger looked toward me.

And then the entire chamber went silent.

The Source inside me opened.

Not awakened.

Opened.

I could feel every memory.

Every voice.

Every life.

Every forgotten moment.

The golden light spread across my body.

The stranger stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

"No."

I stared at him.

"You wanted a replacement."

The light grew stronger.

"You wanted someone you could control."

The floor began cracking.

"But I'm not your creation."

The stranger shook his head.

"You don't understand."

I stepped forward.

"I understand enough."

The Source spoke through me.

Not with one voice.

With millions.

"She chooses."

The stranger fell to his knees.

The entire sanctuary shook.

Above us, the First Generation began shouting.

Something was happening throughout the city.

The Second Generation had awakened.

The Memory Tree was glowing.

The First Hunger was calling from beneath the sanctuary.

And the Design was beginning to collapse.

The stranger looked at me.

"You cannot control what comes next."

I looked at him.

"I don't want to."

I raised my hand.

"I want to choose."

The golden light struck the chamber.

The stranger disappeared.

Not destroyed.

Gone.

Taken somewhere beyond the door.

Silence followed.

Then Rowan approached me.

His face was pale.

"You shouldn't have done that."

"Why?"

"Because now the First Door knows you're awake."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He looked behind me.

The open doorway was no longer empty.

Something stood inside it.

A woman.

Tall.

Motionless.

Her face was hidden beneath a dark hood.

But I could see her eyes.

Golden.

She stepped forward.

Then she removed the hood.

My heart stopped.

She had my face.

Not the face of the first Heir.

Not my ancient ancestor.

My face.

Exactly as I looked now.

She smiled.

And behind her stood thousands of people.

All wearing the same golden mark.

The woman looked at me.

"Finally."

She extended her hand.

"Come meet the other versions of yourself."
