The success of the "Puppet Core" was like carving out the first ray of light in an endless darkness. However, the core was merely the heart; it required a vessel to contain it—a system that could apply converted energy to the human body. This was the furnace of the Body Tempering Furnace.
Over the next three months, Sayo entered a state of near-frantic productivity. By day, he was the silent, model apprentice of the Puppet Production Class, but every lunch break and every evening was stolen for his private obsession.
The corner of his workbench was taken over by complex blueprints—drafts of a device integrating a puppet frame, sealing guide grooves, and energy conduits modeled after the human meridian system. The materials were no longer scrap wood; they were specialized, Chakra-conductive alloys he had scavenged or purchased through his "Spider" sales.
The Construction
The manufacturing was grueling. Lacking large machinery, Sayo cut and polished the frame by hand. The internal conduits, designed to ensure the energy diffused evenly into his cells, required the precision of a master surgeon. He became a ghost in the workshop, siphoning remnants from the scrap depot and asking the veterans in the Maintenance Squad to help with heavy metalwork on weekends, under the guise of "advanced puppet frame experimentation."
Sharyu watched his son's bedroom transform into a laboratory. He didn't understand the strange, cylindrical device rising from the floor, but the dedication in Sayo's eyes was enough. He began converting more of his salary into high-purity materials, silently helping Sayo steady heavy components or grind rough edges, his trust absolute and wordless.
After ninety days of sleepless labor, the device was finished. Half a person's height, bulky and patched together from various metals and woods, it looked like a crude technological relic from another world. Its surface was a web of winding runes and copper-colored conduits, with a central recess perfectly sized for the Puppet Core.
The Activation
The room smelled of hot metal, drying paint, and the ozone of raw Chakra. Sayo stood before the furnace, his breathing shallow. Sharyu stood behind him, muscles taut, his own Chakra circulating in case he needed to drag his son from a catastrophe.
"Father, I'm starting," Sayo whispered.
Sharyu nodded heavily.
Sayo took the walnut-sized Puppet Core from his pocket. It hummed with a faint, warm light. With a steady hand, he pressed it into the central recess.
Click.
The core seated perfectly. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then—
BUZZ—!
The furnace vibrated with a low-frequency growl. The rune lines on its surface ignited, glowing with a soft, bioluminescent blue as energy flooded the circuits. A loud humming filled the cramped room, the air vibrating with the pressure of a localized energy field.
Sharyu instinctively stepped forward, his hand reaching for the core to rip it out.
"Father, wait!" Sayo shouted, his eyes locked on the diagnostic runes. "The resonance is stable! It's drawing the pre-set charge. This is the activation sequence!"
Sayo's sensory ability was at its peak. He could "see" the raw Chakra being shattered by the resonance plates inside the core, neutralized, and then funneled through the Yang-nurturing conduits. The energy was no longer a weapon; it was a warm, white radiance that began to fill the inner chamber of the furnace.
The loud hum subsided into a rhythmic, stable thrum—the sound of a giant creature in a peaceful slumber.
The Threshold
"It worked," Sayo breathed, his face flushed with a rare, manic joy. "The field is uniform. It's ready."
The inner wall of the chamber emitted a soft, inviting glow. It didn't feel like the cold energy of a puppet; it felt like the warmth of a summer sun. The "Body Tempering Furnace" was no longer a blueprint. It was a functioning machine.
Sharyu looked at the creation, then at his son. The device was an impossibility, a defiance of everything a shinobi knew about the dangers of foreign energy. Yet, it stood there, breathing.
Sayo stepped toward the light. The next step was the most dangerous: he had to step inside and prove that he could rebuild what nature had broken.
