Chapter 11 - 11 Qyburn's Trial

After you choose your major, I will assign you a bachelor's degree holder in that major as your mentor, and you will become an apprentice under that bachelor's degree holder.

When you feel you have mastered your studies, you can take the bachelor's degree exam. Passing the exam and completing the necessary steps will earn you a bachelor's degree.

The academy will no longer charge tuition fees, and in return, you will receive a monthly subsidy. The specific amount of the subsidy depends on the number of links you create; the subsidy will vary depending on the number of links.

Afterward, the maester explained the many rules of the Citadel to Gavin on the way, such as no drinking and no fighting, and those who violated these rules would be expelled from the Citadel. The two soon arrived at the spacious administration hall and began registering Gavin.

Gavin touched the golden dragon in his pocket, feeling a pang of reluctance, but he still painfully emptied most of his wealth and handed it over to this management bachelor.

Over the years, Ser Edmund had given him pocket money from time to time. Through selling salt and his recent wages as a guard, he had saved up 30 gold dragons. This was quite a sum; in Westeros, two silver stags were enough for a family of three to live on for a month, while one gold dragon could be exchanged for 10 silver stags.

The management graduate touched the extra golden dragon and instantly smiled, saying enthusiastically, "My name is Mishu, you can call me Bachelor Mishu. There are still many vacant dorm rooms available. I'll get a booklet later and you can choose one yourself. Once you've chosen, I'll arrange it for you."

In addition, students and apprentices need to ask for leave before going out. If you want to go out in the future, just contact me.

Have you decided which subject to choose? Do you need me to recommend one? I already know a bit about the bachelor's programs in various fields.

Gavin frowned slightly, considered for a moment, and said, "Sir Mishu, I would like to study medicine and magical research under Sir Coburn." Gavin took the opportunity to make his request.

"Your choice is good. Maester Qyburn is very accomplished in medicine, and for magical research, I suggest you choose Maester Marwyn. Although most maesters in the Citadel don't believe in magic, it must be said that Maester Marwyn is second to none in this field. The key is that apprentices can only choose one subject in their first year, and I suggest you choose Maester Qyburn. He also has some knowledge of magical research, and the Citadel generally believes that he will eventually forge Valyrian steel chains. This way, you'll gain multiple benefits," the Maester of Management said patiently with a smile.

"Thank you for recommending Bachelor of Science, Mishu. I will follow your advice and choose a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine," Gavin said without hesitation.

Scholar Mishu shrugged. "Alright, I'll arrange it like this for you. You can come to me if you need any help in the future."

Gavin quickly thanked him, received his graduation gown, and then headed towards his chosen dormitory with his luggage.

In his dorm room, Gavin, having just finished tidying up, lay on his bed, silently contemplating his plans. The urban management program included room and board, but he really needed to start thinking about making money. Selling the technology directly would be short-sighted, while building his own business lacked both start-up capital and the strength to protect it.

After a moment's thought, Gavin set his sights on the tournament. House Tyrell held an annual tournament in the Reach, though the prize money wasn't as high as Robert's in the story. The prize for first place in the jousting tournament was only 5,000 gold dragons, but to even register, one needed at least knighthood. He, a bastard, couldn't participate.

The team tournament and archery tournament each award 2000 gold dragons for first place, but it doesn't discriminate based on background; anyone can participate in either. Judging by the time, it will be held in seven months. If all else fails, I can use some energy points to upgrade my archery to Master level; that way, I'm guaranteed to get 4000 gold dragons.

Gavin assessed his current level, concluding that his physical abilities barely surpassed most knights in their prime, given that his body was only 14 years old and had considerable room for growth. However, when it came to swordsmanship alone, Gavin confidently believed he was among the best in Westeros; after all, his special abilities weren't for nothing.

Having received the money, Maester Mishu arranged everything for Gavin the very next day, and he officially became Qyburn's apprentice.

Five months later, at the University City. In a dimly lit room, Gavin was intently tending to the wound of a veteran who had lost an arm. The veteran gritted his teeth, enduring the pain, sweat pouring down his face like rain.

Gavin's gaze was firm and focused, and the tools in his hands seemed to come alive. He skillfully used tweezers to pick out the blackened, rotting flesh, each movement precise and swift, without the slightest hesitation or deviation.

Maester Coburn stood to the side, his eyes following Gavin's every move closely. A look of admiration gradually appeared on his face, his eyes full of appreciation and surprise. He couldn't help but nod and say, "Gavin, your performance is becoming more and more outstanding. With your current level, you can forge the Silver Chain of Medicine."

Gavin continued working, and upon hearing Sir Coburn's praise, he humbly replied, "It's all thanks to your excellent teaching, Sir. I still have much to learn." He finished with a sincere smile.

After the surgery, Gavin carefully bandaged the veteran's wound. Sir Coburn stepped forward, checked it again, and said with satisfaction, "Good job. Get ready, come with me to see the other wounded."

The two stepped out of the room, sunlight bathing them. As they walked, Maester Coburn imparted more experience and skills to Gavin, who listened attentively, occasionally raising his own questions and insights using his knowledge from his previous life. Maester Coburn praised his thinking ability highly, his face full of satisfaction.

As the days went by, Gavin made rapid progress under the guidance of Bachelor Coburn and with the help of the panel. Gradually, Coburn began to regard Gavin as a partner who could conduct academic research together, rather than an apprentice. Gavin's insights often enlightened Coburn, and many problems that had troubled him for a long time were solved by Gavin's flashes of inspiration.

Coburn even considered having this outstanding apprentice participate in his private research, but such research was not tolerated by the City, so he dared not invite Gavin rashly. However, he had been troubled for too long and had no choice but to make several attempts to probe Gavin.

Gavin, sensing the probing, repeatedly expressed his views on medicine and acknowledged and supported some of Qyburn's experimental hypotheses about combining magic with medicine, especially regarding human experimentation. Gavin showed no resistance and even offered numerous suggestions.

In Coburn's study, Gavin and Coburn were discussing medical knowledge. Coburn kept complaining about the lack of detail in the human anatomy diagrams and repeatedly asked the City to restart research on the human body, but the City refused each time.
